  • great stuff. uncle carly would be proud.

  • Wow... I just watched the first clip, now this...?? Man am I glad I found this...! This is the closest I've ever heard any drummer play the high-hat like Carlton. I've played with a number of different reggae drummers, and only one came close to the same feel.... but not like this!! This was IT right here.....!

  • Carlton is my number one drummer... went to lee perry concert last week. with out Carlton reggae would not got this far... Carlton and Aston Barrett and Lee the upsetter Perry.. most important. Carlton deserved more respect

  • Thank you for sharing this great drum beat, Aston. Keep it going so generations to come may know about your uncle's contribution to the drum world. I love this beat which to me "IS" the signature sound of reggae music. You know it when you hear it. Peace. G.

  • Really Nice, That snare sound really roots. BTW Your dad is credited on Both Burning Spear LPS "Marcus Garvey" & "Man In The Hills". I wanted to know on which exact songs did he play?

  • you're really good at drumming :-D

  • None taken. You are correct, I did spell bass incorrectly. But a true reggae fan knows rhythm as riddim. Its something you feel and dont worry about semantics.

  • That drop gives me shivers down my spine man, must be the barrett genes ah? respect from hawaii

  • love the short fills at 0:35 and 1:04 !

  • Famz, I jus saw the Wailers in Omaha on the 21st. Though you weren't there to honor Carlie and Famz Sr., they were still skankn. I got a chance of a lifetime to meet your father, and I did. But I was so overwhelmed that I didnt ask him my question. But you may know the answer. Next to Jah given talents, what does it take to go from a Lee's Bike Shop to mentoring Flee, Robbie, ect...and becoming the band leader of the greatest band in the world?? I gotta know. Much respect.

  • I also wanted to add that I saw and met Sly and Robbie, and while the base was heavy and the riddim was steady, it was not as strong as the Barrett brothers. But, Sly was really good to us.

  • you are using the ludwing suphrafonic?

    what model, what year?

  • Aff...o cara é psicoo!!!

    toca pacass...muito bommm!!

  • big respect for u! your uncle still the best one! :) am his most fan!!! go carlton!!!! will see you in another life!

  • Play on, my brother. Play on.

  • Please post more.that was the best.Bless.

  • so mais eu!!!!

  • somebody knows joey jordisson ?

  • Its so good to see that the Barrett legacy is alive and well. When I listen to this video...I hear Bob singing from heaven. The spirit is alive

  • Aston, your uncle is my favourite drummer of all time man, and i didn't think i would hear anyone play drums like that again So thanks and full respect.

  • WOW..great! The authentic sound of a Barrett lives ONN! hahaha. Keep it up!

  • delicious sounds,, LOVE IT !

big up unu self & all the great masters,.

Family Man and Carly forIver ! !

  • Never could personally master the reggae beat. Hats off.

  • at the end it kinda reminds me of one of Bob Marley's live versions of I Shot The Sheriff

  • Lol i know but its Belly full they kinda have the same intro.

  • Fair comment.

Surely the heaviest steppers by Junior Delgado is 'A Storm Is Coming' and Sly wasn't drumming on that (Have you heard the explosive dubplate cut : 'King Tubby's Coming'?)

But I think Sly's greatest moment was on Niney/King Tubby's 'I soon know' - a mighty steppers tune.

Unfortunately, there is not enough space here to discuss all the roots classics.

I respect your knowledge of these legendary Reggae musicians and I'm glad that you are keeping the Art of Reggae drumming alive.

  • Hi BIGBOUTYAH.

When I say that Sly 'mashed up the art of Reggae drumming' I'm referring to his 'choppy', monotonous, 'military style' and how he eliminated the jazzy syncopations, rim-shots, flying cymbals, and rhythmic flow as demonstrated by 'the greats' like Carlton Barrett, Santa, and Horsemouth.

As if that wasn't bad enough, Sly introduced the syndrum to Reggae, which led to the use of drum machines, programmers, and consequently the death of the art of Reggae drumming itself.

  • I hear what you are saying and I agree Sly did start playing repetitive patterns in his drumming. As a drummer myself I rather hear Carlton playing one drop than Sly but put Sly on steppers than that's a different story. One of the greatest one drop tunes for me is Junior Hibbert (Delgado) Really for a reason and the greatest steppers is Fort Augustus by the same singer.

I think Sly wanted to sound different from the rest but I have to respect Santa, Carly, Horsemouth etc for their flow

  • wol man your good! Greetings from Bulgaria ;]

  • hey how do you tune that snare, sounds great !!! You sound great , like yer uncle. I play drums in reggae band here in Florida. SOrt of a transition from Progressive Rock. Learning all the ropes now.

  • buena ejecucion este si es reageeeeeeee

  • jaahh!! truly deh son of family man. nothing like barrett blood selassie I

  • me and u are family my fathers cousins the rest of my musical family r the upsetters, glen adams and many more, meet yr father and told him who i was took a pic with him as well, if they is a way to contact u that would be good.bye for now . 1 LOVE.

  • Reminds me a lot of "Field Marshal" himself.

    Keep the reggae alive.

    One Love

  • who do u play for in the music right now?keep up the good works yah bless!!!!

  • Right now am blaying the Bass guitar and rythem Guitar for Juian Marley

  • Keep the Reggae Drums alive, Aston.

Reggae needs you in this day and time of this terrible 'Digital Drumming' nonsense.

You drum WICKED like your uncle who, together with Horsemouth and Santa, were the greatest Reggae Drummers of all time.

I just can't understand why Sly got all the credit - he mashed up the art of Reggae drumming.

So Aston - you can do the 'Flying Cymbals'?

  • Can you explain what you mean by Sly mashed up the art of reggae drumming? Sly has his own style of drumming just like Santa, Horsemouth, Mikey Boo, Cleveland Browne, Carlton Barrett, Lloyd Knibb, Grub Cooper, Fil Calendar etc

  • Noman Sly is oneofmy favorite drummers trust me.

  • btw the this isnt my tag name its my sisters im definatelt not DaBaddestBiznitch ha

  • Lol flying Cymbals i dont no maybe.

  • YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO is drew bro i did not relize how good you were....how was the cali show hit me up when you get back in town and ill try to make it over for a jam sesh asap much love man. peace be with you

  • Yea man true we will

  • Your uncle was my favorite reggae drummer & your father is my favorite reggae bass player. Carly's style was so distinctive I can even hear it in his session work away from the Wailers. That stuff is often uncredited, but you can always tell its him. I also read where Aston talked about removing as many notes from a bassline as possible. Nothing extra, just the most Crucial notes. Your drumming sounds fantastic and I'm so glad the musical legacy of your family continues. Maximum Respect!

  • Bless thaks man true true

  • Big ups my brotha..don't let that talent go to waste...
