Elizabeth I'm a homeless Vet myself, so I have some idea what your going through have you ever heard of the downtown chapel aka red doors, on 6th and Burnside? their a tremendous resource. you can get clothing once a month, they have foot care, and hair cuts every Wednesday they have hospitality area thats open 6 days a week for a breakfast sorta thing, you can get hygiene kits once a week including socks and underwear. they give out backpacks and sleeping bags every Friday if they have them.
There are plenty of jobs available, and may not be what anyone wants. But look at all of the illegal immigrants willing to work a low end/low paying job when most Americans sit around collecting unemployment. Mexican are willing to work, Americans will not settle for less and go to work. Many times I had to work low end jobs for lower pay. Just get a job as there is no such thing as being unemployed!
Everyone is willing to work a little lower, but I don't want a politician to yell across the hall over stupid ideologies and collecting $174,000 with a shit load of benefits for life for 2-6 year term(for 1 term or 30 terms). Then saying they need a pay raise. Fuck that. I'm willing to work atleast $7/hr in California, but Businesses won't hire you anyways. Illegal Immigration is a scapegoat but is a problem everywhere.
People need to understand that any of us at anytime could become homeless. Most people are just a few paychecks away from loosing everything and being forced to live on the streets as it is. With all the job losses and housing loss? yeah you best believe we are all in some danger of becoming homeless. We have to also learn, that we need to take care of each other and help each other along life's path. Never judge anyone unless you've walked in there shoes and lived there life.
My feeling is that Elizabeth wants to be homeless, or helpless, or whatever in Portland. And even if she were offered a job on the spot, she wouldn't take it.
Unlike people of the Great Depression, Americans do not know how to survive without the modern things that they have taken for granted. A caged animal that is turned out will suffer for the same reason.
Elizabeth is a product of a destructive social architecture that demands an insane level of cost and entanglement in order to function. Lose the means to function and the fall is long and dark before one hits bottom on the streets.
We need a resurrection of the CCC-WPA work programs of the 1930's
I think you have lost alot of people with your latest clips. Some of these people need to start helping theirselves before anyone can start to help them. No one deserves to be homeless but at what point should theystart to look within themselves to get off the street. I was homeless before it sucked but I worked twice as hard to get back on my feet, I didn't wait for someone to help me. I hope that woman finds the courage and help to get off the streets. God Bless
I see sadness in her actually; behind her beautiful smile and natural happy approach toward life. This young woman is highly intelligent and could do so many things--there's no reason for her to be homeless. May the Lord God bless her and protect her...
The three wishes question, IMO, is a good one. Not only does it remind us that these are people with the same hopes and dreams we all have, but it also gets the person to think about what is the most important to them. BTW, has anyone else noticed how the homeless often make wishes for ALL PEOPLE, not just themselves? I hope she gets the help she needs.
@WAPTek2 I even hate to use the word "they" when I refer to the homeless population. I was homeless for 7 months in 2004. There is alot of pain and suffering on the street, but still we all would look out for each other. I still believe people are basically good. That was my experience, anyway.
@Modacolorist In Portland, even the homeless people will give you a hard time if you litter. I have a friend who got into a fight with a homeless person for throwing a cigarette butt on the ground there.
I love that the three wishes answer is hardly ever 'I want money and expensive things and a really nice house' it's things like someone to be alive again, and a clean pair of clothes and stuff. It's nice :)
@invisiblepeopletv You should really consider going to Norfolk, Virginia. There are thousands of homeless people living in probably the smallest city in VA. Entire families living on the street, and the only homeless shelter in town is constantly on the verge of shutting down. I used to work with Food Not Bombs there feeding anyone who wanted a warm meal until we got shut down by the police, and I can tell you that the people out there want nothing more than for people to treat them as human.
@invisiblepeopletv I think the reason he has a problem with it is because when you ask them their three wishes it looks like it gives them false hope that you yourself are going to help them fulfill their three wishes.
@invisiblepeopletv I can definately see the false hope thing, but I can also see how for the viewer, hearing something as simple and intimate as 3 wishes helps to humanize the "homeless".
@P4tSte i hope sometime u understand the point from all this and maybe respect this person a little but how about that does it reakky matter to you if he put what ever in his vid the point 4m all this is to let ppl see what's hapenning in this world and stop thinking they are living in wonder land and stop whining on stupid things and start caring about other ppl
@aliceinw0nderland0 As a former homeless person and a soon be again homeless person, I find it obnoxious and pandering. When I was homeless, I wanted a place to live, some pussy, and some money. Its a juvenile question to ask because there is no genie and no one will be providing the wishes. If this guy wants to ask that question then fine, I ain't stopping him. Its just dumb.
