Using the computer to produce animation/art is simply a means to an end. You can learn all the the animation/grahics/media software in the world, but if you can't create art through basic means like paint, brush, and paper you won't do much on the pc. The computer cannot create magic for you. The animation companies will sometimes hire artists with no computer experience and train them. It is all about having talent and being able to create. A degree doesn't matter.
The same is true of software design. There's a million books out there to teach you dozens of programming language; thousands of API's you can learn. But when it comes to writing simply good software, all you need to know is algorithms.
