I think new models are necessary for each metro system. They are better for passengers and cheaper for public transport authority too. I believe old soviet models will survive in museums. So although it can be sad for enthusiast it is important to buy new trains. 81-71 also finished operation in Prague replaced by new and reconstructed models. I´m always happy to see investment to future of public transport.

I know how you feel. In the early 1990s Chicago got rid of out PCC fleet of subway cars that were built from streetcar (tram) parts in the 1950s. While they were not as nice as the Soviet cars, they too were a Chicago icon.

And new trains have more power autimatic door, forced ventilation and even Air conditioner.

You are not right. In the Moscow underground the 80% of trains is the Soviet ones. Look at statistics:

Cars of "Е" series (USSR) and their modifications - 900 cars 19,8 %

Cars of 81-714/717 series (USSR/Russia) and their modifications - 3192 cars 69,8 %

maybe the cars are left (like the purple line: has a mix of cars). But whole entire trains of this model seem to be going away.

There are not mix of cars, but there are modernized E* cars on purple (Tagansko-Krasnopresnenskaya) line.

But you are partially right - original E*-cars gradually leave us. But I hope that in 2010 the Museum of metro-cars in Moscow nevertheless will be opened...

I don't know, as someone not from Russia, it's hard for me to say. Some people may feel that anything left over from Soviet Russia is a reminder of a bad past, but I think that history, even the darker sides of history, should be preserved.
