First off, the subtitles in that are bare-faced lies. Anyone who can speak even a bit of German can understand that he's not saying that at all.

Uhm, sorry guys but I happen to understand German and the subtitles are a mistranslation. He did NOT say 75% of member states' laws are made by Europe. He says of the laws passed by the European Union 75% are made by the European Parliament.

He does not in any way state how much of an influence those laws have on individual member states. This is a horrible example of twisting and (willfully - I have to assume) misrepresenting someone's words. Shocking!

What he actually says (were a full clip given to put it in context) is that the European Parliament (not the EU) legislates on 75% of laws *passed by the European Union*. Not passed by EU member states just by the EU itself, at EU level.

He was saying not saying that 75% of all the laws in Europe are made by the EU, but that that 75% of the laws made by the EU are passed by the EU Parliament.

If you listen to his whole speech, it is obvious that that is what he meant.

He was obviously referring to the 'co-decision' procedure, which currently the European Parliament is involved in and is House is not consulted on all issues. With Lisbon, the European Parliament would be the legislator for nearly all laws originated at the EU level. That is a good thing for democracy because it takes power away from Eurocrats and to the representatives of the people.

What can actually be done about Lisbon though? Surely it's too late to change anything? Come June and the Irish inevitable "yes" in the oh so democratic "second referendum," how can it be stopped? Even if every Briish MEP was UKIP there's nothing we can do surely?
