ill take a straight cut gear box over a helical gear gear box any day. Since straight cut gears can supply more power and can take acceptable loads until failure. Yes helical gears are nice thus being alot quieter, but want to separate in a higher power application.

@wdowa94 yah the gears have a different tooth that are angle and disengage easily to the next gear a normal transmission you have to seperate the gear and pop it into a new one loseing RPM's the straight cuts have angles so the dont have to be pulled and popped just slide to the next gear and vice versa with the downshift

@whatsvtec I don't know man. If you pay close attention, he was taking all the cars out while entering or exiting the turns. When everyone was at full throttle on the straights, he wasn't losing ground, but he wasn't any faster either. He just either had a way better setup suspension/tires/aero-wise or way bigger balls than the rest of the drivers.

Pulling down to go up a gear, and up to go down gear - most manual sequentials use this setup, it makes sense because of directional g force. When accelerating it is easier to pull toward yourself than push forward, the opposite being true when decelerating. Try it sometime when passenger goes to adjust the radio - accelerate suddenly, they won't be able to touch the dial. haha

most transmissions have helical gears in them but dog box trannys has all spur.

spur gears whine and has a high pitch sound to them, thats wat u hear

@TheHeavensReject to expand on what orenmcgrath said, helical gears basically slide in and out of contact, so the transition is smoother, but, there is less gear to gear contact at any one time. With straight cut gears, there is direct contact between gears, and the entire tooth is in contact, they basically slam into each other, making a wining sound. :)

Whine increases with vehicle speed, not engine speed and also there's no break in the mesh noise as the gears change- you can't engage spur gears on the move, so that also validates your point.

In a constant-mesh gearbox, all gears on both the input shaft and the output shaft are always engaged. The bits that move are small dog-teeth that lock/unlock a particular gear to the output shaft. As road speed increases, the speed of the output shaft also increases and so does the whine.

@rock3tcat I make it easy for u , helical gears r lot more tough (strong) than our normal helix gears which it can wistand more strain so logically powerful engine can be used on those gearbox well tats 1 of the point but its harder to shift since its straight u will have to like " bang " it in because the gears r hard to syncronisze compare to our normal helix gears which will just actually slide in since its facing bit side ways
