  • If this refers to the troops I think it does, a lot came home to be spat upon by the "flower children". Kind of bittersweet.

  • is it just me who got chills down yer body when johnny cash started singing?!

  • o mono.......always feels better...

  • yum

  • Wonderful and so full of emotion and artistry, two of the greats performing together.

  • didnt know about his beating any more details, what a shame

  • It is not the Singing Brakeman. He died of TB in 1933.

  • Great performance!

A version that is like how the song is meant to be sung!

  • When was this perfotmed? During Viet Nam I presume? It must have been because they related it to their current times. Would have been relevant to our time too.

  • Johnny !!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I sure like this

  • The tune is called "Londonderry Air". An old Irish air from the early 1600's. In the early 1900's, an Englishman named Fred Weatherly wrote "Danny Boy" as a poem and set it to a tune. It was unsuccessful. His sister came home from Ireland and played the Irish tune for him. He set "Danny Boy" to the tune, and it became a famous song.

  • The music is Irish from around the early 1600's. It is normally called "Londonderry Air". Fred Weatherly (from England) wrote the lyrics "Danny Boy" in the early 1900's. He set it to his own music but it was unsuccessful. His sister came home from Ireland and played him this tune. He set his lyrics to the old Irish air, and it caught on. It is a common thing in folk music to take an old tune

and set your own lyrics to them. Johnny did it sometimes.

  • Johnny Cash was a Scottish American who thought he was Irish but never found family from there. He did the whole melting pot thing of assuming he may have had family from there.

  • o Donny Boy go Fight and fight for ireland i miss you come home to Court Down

  • the singing brakeman died in 1933--this is the guy that did "Scarlet Ribbons" decades later. The early JR was really the turning point where the country popular music vein begins.

  • Johnny Cash priceless Jimmy Rodgers maudlin joke.

  • Love this great song and the singers !

  • Different Jimmie Rodgers than the Singing Cowboy.

  • Beautiful.

  • WOW....

  • this song is just great, thanks for uploading

  • I love Jimmie Rodgers. He's not performing anymore but he is alive and well in California.

  • Thanks for uploading this video. Two great singers. Enjoyed this very much, again thank you very much.

  • Is this a diffrent Jimmy Rodgers then the singing brakemen ? That sings T For Texes ?and if so does he any relation to the Jimmy I know, and I mean the man hear and you guys no dissrespect by the way great vid thanks

  • @mrtoeknee641 Yes, they are not related. You can hear Jimmie Rodgers, the singing brakeman, singing T for Texas on You tube, just do a search.

  • @mrtoeknee641 Iv never heard of this Jimmy Rodgers that does dannyboy with Johnny cash I just find I odd that ther was another Jimmy Rodgers country singer out ther with the same name as the singing brakemen

  • @mrtoeknee641 Intrestingly this Jimmie Rodgers was born on the same year the other Jimmie Rodgers died

  • @mrtoeknee641 Jimmie Rodgers Snow is the son of Country legend Hank Snow.

  • @mrtoeknee641 your jimmie rodgers was dead before johnny got going

  • Actually Jimmy Rodgers had a prime time TV show....But he had a bad car accident that put him in the hospital for a year...Never came back all the way......I miss him.

  • @wcd47 Not a car accident; he was savagely beaten by an off duty police officer.

  • @Carters01 damn cops they take all the greats from us them or drugs

  • @wcd47 Mr. Rodgers says he was attacked by a policeman in an unjustifeid action. This fine performer was nver the same. Metal plate in head.

  • @foxvienna1 that was true, for 30 years he had a plate in his skull, he sued LA for 20 million and received just 200,000...that cop showed up to a show of his 15 years later in Washington State

  • RIP Johnny Cash v.v

  • Jimmie is alive and well living in the Palm Springs area. My dad's band the Shenandoah Trio was Jimmie's band in the early 60's on his weekly TV show and got to travel the world with him. Dad is 80 now and he and Jimmie still keep in touch. All the band members are still alive except for Dennis Arnold who tragically died in the terrible Chatsworth train wreck in September 2008.

  • My God, that ´s wonderful.

  • oh, you can tell when it's Johnny Cash, that great deep voice of his. and Jimmie Rodgers his a really wonderful voice, too. This is a unique version, I love it. <3

  • Very Good.

  • Thank you for posting this ... BEAUTIFUL! Thank you!

  • very unusual but i kinda enjoyed it

  • which year ?

  • Damn! Even a hard rocker and metal dude like me can appreciate the gravitas and coolness of the great baritone, Johnny Cash!

  • Priceless Performance by two Class Acts

    Thanks for posting

  • Anything on Jimmie Rodgers Greatest Hits is good. This recording is from 1970. It's really special to me.

  • great clip......very well sung by a couple of legends....these old pieces give me so much enjoyment to watch and listen to.....thankyou for listing this classic

  • love the song, love the singers, but americans think they are all half irish! lol.

the songs lyrics where written by an englishman and the melody originated in scotland.

  • yeah , and the melody is caled ``the Londonderry Ayre(sp)´´

tens of millions of Americans have Irish blood. Tens of millions have Itailian blood.....................

  • Londonderry is also known as Derry. one of the countys of ireland. the words were written by a brit. his name was Fred Weatherly, words were written at the start of the irish rebellion. music by rory dhall o'cahan (Irish klan name, anglicized to o'kane or just cane) in or about 1600.

more people claim irish blood because Millions left ireland in a mass exodus to escape the famine, or to escape british rule. sorry for the long reply, nanna flanigan used 2 sing this 2 me, its a personal fav!!!

  • Interesting. How do you know about Rory and 1600 ? It doesn't say this on various sites about the song I read some time back.

  • I took a few to many euro history classes at University. this was in one of the txt books, and i am near certain that it also is talked about in "the IRA; a History" by Tim Pat Coogan. good book by the way. Semi un-biased, with a lean toward the Green. Over a month later... thats the reply... sorry, Ive been traveling!!!

  • @jtmonsman No this is not correct. The song was being played by an unknown street violinist in Londonderry . It was heard by a woman who was a musician - she wrote down the melody. which became immortalized as the LONDONDERRY AIR.Words of various kinds were added later!

  • @bobphillifent the lyrics were written by an englishman so thre song has quite a pedigree

  • You are if you live in Boston.

  • Great version of this song.I also like Elvis Presleys version.

  • For me, the best after the Andy Williams version! It could be the music of an old western film with sunset and beautiful landscape, heroe riding his horse and all other romantic things going with! ...

    Oh la la!

  • Jimmy Rogers had a few hits in 1957.

Remember Honeycomb and Kisses Sweeter Than Wine to name Two.

  • Secretly may have been his best. Bim Bom Bay?

  • not bad.

  • Jimmie Rodgers and Johnny Cash??? How can that be? Rodgers died in 1933 and Cash was born in 1932...

  • It is a different Jimmie Rodgers.

  • Is this the jimmie rodgers that sang kisses sweeter than wine?

  • Yes

  • this is like a perfect video for me, just add...nope it's pretty much as good as it can get, i guess helen carter on "back up" guitar.

  • ggggg

  • There seems to be quite a few men with the name Jimmy Rodgers. Am I correct in assuming that this is the pop singer version born in the year (1933) The same year Jimmy Rodgers (The Singing Breakman Died) This guy who is singing with Johnny Cash is still in the land of the living, according to Wiki. Can anyone clear this matter up. Thankyou..........

  • This is Jimmie F. Rodgers and you can learn much about him by reading the above comments. James Charles (Jimmie) Rodgers was the singing brakeman.

  • poor jimmy :(

  • that was great. those two voices blend with such purpose. . .as good as csny, beetles, everlys, etc. two fine artists rest in peace. and thanx for all the great music and inspiration

  • Rest In Peace Dad..

  • A Masterpiece by two giants.

God bless you both and thank you for a priceless performance.

  • Two all time greats working together, probably 35+ years ago. You're not likely to see something this good anytime soon.

  • Great Combo.. love it! Thank you!

  • I read Johnny's bio and it mentions that, for years, he believed his family was Irish until, after he paid a genealogist to trace his roots, he discovered that he was Scottish.

  • Rodgers was terrific in his prime. Perhaps his humility hurt him. Not to be confused with Jimmy Rogers.

  • Fabulous footage of the 2 greats! Thanks cartersO1 - beautiful song x

  • The right Johnny Cash, the wrong Jimmie Rodgers

  • Great spoken word that you will get no where else. You are so wrong about Jimmie Rodgers, he had over 40 hit records, large and small, and his own TV show. Only a mistaken 'fag bashing' (Jimmie was not gay) on Dec 1, 1967 and three brain surgeries that followed, effectively ended his career, or there would be much more. VERY underrated!

  • A recent article in the Desert Sun says that Jimmie believed his almost fatal beating was a mob hit, as the label he was originally working on was owned by mobsters. He only recently had the steel plate removed from his head. That article caused me to come searching YouTube for any live concerts that may have been recorded.

  • I know what Jimmie wants to believe, but why would the city of Los Angeles pay him $200,000 in an out of court lawsuit settlement over this case, IF IT WAS A MOB HIT.

The police officer did it. I believe he was inspired to do this because Jimmie's hit record of the day was 'Child of Clay', which some labeled gay.

Jimmie was not gay and didn't realize this might be called a gay song when he recorded it.

Jimmy Rodgers the greatest balladeer of his day, still sings, but not at his former level

  • Whatever the true story is, I never heard about it until I read the article today. What a loss for us all, as he was a wonderful singer.

  • When you listen to something like this, all you can say is more, more. Did they ever do anything else together?

  • I just watched to Jimmie Rodgers cruise ship edition of 100 miles as recorded by his son (honeycombkid), and now this. There are so many versions of this song out there, I don't think any of them ever moved me like this. Who is going to fill their shoes?

  • here's more musical irony...Amazing Grace was written by a slave trader..hmmm

  • that's totally incorrect. Amazing Grace was written by the pastor of John Newton, who was one of the most important anti-slavery activists of all time.

  • The words to Amazing Grace were indeed written by John Newton, a former slave trader who later became a pastor and Hymn writer.

  • Oh, well then in that case I'm sorry I put those stupid words out there.

Wow, I really feel stupid now.

  • I remember this where did the years go?miss these guys .

  • omg johnny is my hero ,,, rip man .. im gonna cry now

  • Wow! What a gem, this video is! :c) Thanks for posting it, Carters01!

  • This is lovely, two great performers in a duo

singing their hearts out..thx to Jimmy and the

late great Johnny Cash. Johnny went to Sweden

in 1972 and sang in a prison, Österåker, and

there was an LP called "J. Cash in a Swedish

prison..exc. album and i thinks its on CD nowadays.

  • WONDERFUL!!!

Brings a tear to my eyes....

  • are you people dumb, this song represents al lot for us Irishmen, even if that is jsut your background

  • Perhaps the dumb people know that it was written by an englishman.

  • Jimmie Rodgers was a big hit in Chile at the end of the 50. At present his songs are playing everyday in oldies music program's

radio (Sorry, but I don't speak english). Youtube search DISCO 45 and VIVA EL ROCK AND ROLL (Manuel Vargas) and you will see an honoring from Chile to rock and roll music.

  • First time I heard this version and it blew me away. michael TP

  • No the lyrics were wrote by an English lawer whos main modus operandi was to unite the catholics and protestants in an antherm and bring unity to Ireland.

  • yes thats right ,, what his name again ?

  • The writer was called Frederick Weatherly, an English lawyer, he modified to fit the Derry Air in 1913. Strange that Irish Americans will love this song on the one hand and hate England aka "the brits" on the other.

  • johnny cash is the man

  • played at my dads and grandads funerals (gdad70) and (father55) both taken at early age.

  • Two greats gone. How sad. Danny Boy always makes me sad but I love it.

  • Jimmie Rodgers is still alive and well and living in Palm Springs. Thanks for watching.

    Michael Rodgers. Jimmies son.

  • Really? I was mistaken then. Thank you. Gee I live outside Palm Springs. He must be pretty old.

  • Born 1933; age 74.

  • How is Dad doing?

    I hope he's fine.

My Dad is ok at 83.

He was inducted into the Iowa Country Music Hall of Fame today for his anouncing for the Iowa Barn Dance in the early years before Nashville became "Union".

    Hold fast Michael,

    Clark Williams

  • Jimmie is doing great!. He is writing his second novel and plays golf nearly everyday.

Thanks so much for asking about him. Congratulations to your father for his recent award. All the best, Michael Rodgers

  • Your dad and johnny cash the voices of perfection......God love them, give your dad my best wishes.

  • Michael , carl here I just watched this video and the tears wont stop. What a duo this was. Just great

  • been wathing this withn tears in my eyes

    god bless them both!

  • wow nice clip cheers

  • Great duet! Very inspirational and makes me look for more of Jimmie's music. Thx

  • Anyone who is a fan of Jimmie Rodgers should check out the interview Gary James did with him (type in "Interview with Jimmie Rodgers" - on the internet). Besides discussing his life and career - and the assault which almost claimed his life - Jimmie talks about Buddy Holly, Bobby Darin and the guy from Tupelo (whose name escapes me at the moment).

It's worth the effort to find.

  • This is good news. I have been praying and waiting for this. I cant wait for his new album. I remember when we almost lost him......

  • Hi everyone, In case you haven't heard Dad's surgery was a HUGE success. His skull has regenerated and closed in the 8x6 inch opening that had been there for 40 years. Three months ago there was no bone there. Prayer is Powerful. Dad is healed and so happy. He is home now and preparing to record a new CD of material that he has written over the last few years and looking forward to all that life has to offer. Thanks everyone for your kind thoughts and prayers. Michael Rodgers

  • Michael, that's wonderful news ...cheers to Jimmie! I really love all his music posted here on youtube.

  • Thanks so much. Glad you like the postings.

I've got alot that I will post soon. Register to my videos and you will know when they are on.

  • This is good news. I remember when we almost lost him. GOD IS GREAT.

  • Michael: This is surreal. I've posted other commments on your dad's videos on Youtube. I am sending these links to your dad's videos to my father whom is a great fan of your dad's music. God bless you and your family.

  • So glad to hear this! God Bless!

  • His version of "The World I Used to Know" has always been one of my greatest favorites. I am SO glad he has written his story, and that he is taking this step--risky though it may be. He deserves to have a normal life back again. It is such an outrage that we will never know what happened or why, but would it really change anything? Go for it! You have made a bold mark in musical history, but it ain't over yet!

    Rodney

  • Michael, I have placed your father Jimmy on my church's prayer list and have asked all my internet friends as well as placed a card at my work asking everyone to pray on that day and in the days to come for Jimmy. He is so loved around the world. I know all the prayers and the love will make a difference.

    Lisa

  • I will keep Jimmy in my prayers as you have asked

Michael. God Bless him and give him the strength

    he needs to fully recover...Penny

  • I received the most beautiful letter from Jimmy's son Michael about his dad's condition and the requests for prayers to help Jimmy get through the much needed surgery on his head......I have a direct line to our Lord and I know that our prayers will help him get through this.....I know that he will be fine and live a happy healthy pain free life that he so truly deserves......

A long time fan and past professional singer.

    B.C.

  • I have loved your dad's work from the time he began recording. I have performed "Honeycomb" many times in my years as a singer. Please give Jimmie my best and tell him our prayers are with him.

    Billy & Jeanne Strange

  • Very nice and sad. Jimmie Rodgers is a favorite of mine. When I was a kid, it was exciting to know he'd be appearing with another personal favorite on "The Gisele MacKenzie Show." It's so sad that we'll never learn...since Jimmie & Johnny were calling the boys home from the Vietname war, just as most of us are calling them home from bush's vietnam, part 2.

  • I can't sing that song with out crying.Sorry at this time. Another time I will give it a go.Thanks for allof your beautiful songs William Rittwage

  • Haerd him do this song, Danny Boy, in Dayton back about '71 or 72. One of my favorites.

    John McKiddy

  • This is Jimmie F. Rodgers not to be confused with Jimmie Rodgers, the yodeling brakeman.

  • Thx for the clarification. I was confused for a few minutes here, wondering, well wait a minute; this can't be the same Jimmie Rodgers, the singing brakesman. It's good to learn the history of both. Thanks

  • Honeycombkid1 - Very much enjoy your fathers music - I grew up in Granada Hills and very much remember what the LAPD did to him - God Bless

  • JImmie is one of my favorites too.. I colect records and I have many of his..

  • There is no "USA police force". police forces are local entities controlled by local governments in the US.

  • Well, it must be a different Jimmie Rodgers. The "singing brakeman" died in 1933.

  • This is from the Johnny Cash Show from about 1971. It was taped at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville.

Jimmie is my father. He opened a theatre in Branson, MO in 1992. He recently finished his auto-biography telling about his life in music, career and his recovery from the beating incident that took place in 1967. He is an amazing man and so talented. Thanks for enjoying his work.

  • love your dads music..."no one will ever know" being my fav followed by "its over" and "child of clay." glad to hear he is still active. been a fan since kisses sweeter than wine and that is a long time

  • I am SO delighted to learn that he has penned his story. When will it be published? I recall the vicious beating, the coma, the steel plate in his head, his long recovery (Joey Bishop spoke often of Jimmie on his ABC show). When I spoke with your Dad at the Coast-to-Coast Hardware show in '78, he was fine and did a great show. But oh, what he went through in 67 and after! Is your Dad still in Branson, or So. CA, or where? I would love to speak with him again. A true gentleman.

  • I grew up listening to your dad sing. Even had an album of his best songs. Was barely in my teens, but all of us kids liked his songs...even the little known Bimbombey, and, of course, the hilarious Soldier Soldier Will You Marry Me. I keep scouring youtube for his songs but barely find any....Pity

  • I'll post some more of his work very soon. Thanks for writing.

  • The L.A. cops beat up Jimmy Rodgers so bad in 1966, it ended his career. So sad.

  • Actually an off duty cop, but it didn't end his career.
