  • I'm confused...I;ve been researching a bit about the blues and it's origins, and this man was refered as one of its founders, but this doesn;t sound to me as blues at all, is it because is the first kind of blues? Is it a different style or something else?

  • @zep68cd Listen to the chord progression and the 12 bars. When you take out the horns you will be able to the hear the blues riffs a little clearer. Hope this helps a little... its basically the basis for blues music.

  • @stoo94dufc So it did, cheers, the horns can really be confusing though, huh? But yes, there it is, thanks a lot.

  • Nothing like reading my textbook and listening to what it's talking about

  • the record is shellac not vinyl.

  • @KhaosSoulFury that's right but handy didn't think much of it saying it was primitive yet proclaimed himself the father of the blues

  • lol WC handy supposedly learned the blues from a man on a train who was playing it at the time, it was a completely new thing at the time, ass the blues to brass instruments and you get yourself some jazz.

  • @KhaosSoulFury add* lol

  • who disliked...

  • Hockey teams named after this? Why?

  • 1 person don't have ear, and had oral sex with lady gaga.

  • W.C. Handy was a cornetist...

but yes, I believe that is him; he did make some recordings later in his life before he died, although apparently his cornet tone was very much weakened by age.

  • Sounds like J.C. Higginbotham is on trombone.

  • nothing better than watching vinyl spin and hearing this hiss and pops

  • thanks! from this recording i made funny version- cello duet with four hands(both musicians are playing/using one cello) st. louis blues made project even funnier :-)

  • written about a century before and there are still people who isten to it... that says everything...

  • That must have been a pretty small Orchestra if you can hear the Piano! Sounds like it's just:

    Piano

    Cornet

    Clarinet

    Tenor Saxophone

    And Double Bass.

  • @Morahman7vnNo2

I think there's a trombone in there too.

  • This has a big band sound to it, so I guess this version must be from the 30's or 40's.

  • @otisourcat Not likely, from the label and the instrumentation, this was recorded early to mid 1920s.

  • COOOOL WC Handy I have the same birthday 113 years apart! :) Great stuff this is, I need to research more music like this.

  • So good, they named a hockey team after it! =]

  • @donttellscotty05 My 8 and 9 year olds (son and daughter) play hockey. we read about W.C. Handy today, so I played this sing for them today. When I told them about it, my 8 year old said, "Oh, like the hockey team!"

  • so so rare...born nov16 1873, died 1958....treasure this piece...

  • this is a treasure from THE FATHER OF THE BLUES, THANKS

  • According to Joel Whitburn's book "Pop Memories 1890-1954" (Billboard), release info on this recording is as follows:

    Billboard 9 (11/24/1923) (P) 1923 Okeh Records (4896).

  • this needs to have at the very very least a million views

  • @Easterknight2461 Two million

  • what year?

  • @ThatsABiggon

    borm nov 16, 1873 died 1958

  • @radharetail, I'm sorry, I meant to ask what year was this recorded? I've only heard the reditions he (Handy) did with Bessie Smith in the 20's.

  • Good to hear the original composer conducting his great tune.

  • I think it is!

Thanks I've been looking for this quite some time, because I have to practise this song for Piano, but just heard it once, when my teacher played it
