I could watch these scenes for hours. So strange seeing some familiar buildings but people milling about dressed for a costume drama - but it was real to them. Like the little girl who runs across the street at 0:21 - what was she hurrying for? She has become a shade now as we will soon.
Can I say thanks to the BFI for posting this. I too was born in Ealing and it is a shame that it has changed so much. Although I loved Ealing, Ealing Broadway has become a bit of an eye soar. It really was beautiful at the time this was filmed.
From 00:33 - Anywhere that doesn't have at least that many trees lining the roads should be considered unfit for human habitation. Concrete jungles have a heart of darkness. The horror. The horror.

I was born and raised in Ealing and love the place dearly. I hate what it has become, a 'multicutural' swamp. I left it, and the country some years ago when I could take no more politically correct crap
Just look how elegant the place was back then. Thankfully the people in the film are all dead, I'm sure they would be heartbroken to see what has become of their once beautiful town.

So you left it because of all the immigrants! Now you are one yourself how ironic! I too have lived here all my life and still love the place. Just off to have a curry.
@leybourne42 Excuse my complete lack of comprehension, but it was the "multicultural swamp" quote that caught my eye. I asume you have moved to a mono culuture.
@BelvueSchools Surely you know there's no such thing as a mono culture these days. I take it Belvue is some sort of 'special school'.? that might explain your lack of comprehension.
@leybourne42 That was irony clearly you missed it. So not a bad CV leybourne 42 don't like multiculturalism and having a pop at people with learning difficulties. I'm glad you left! One less bigot.
looks nice and pleasant. lots of trees can make anywhere look beautiful..... but christ on a bike! what a loilet west ealing is now. i bet if i flew my jack now i'd have the law at my door in a jiffy.
Lady selling flowers at Northfields had some PCSO quisling tell her to take down X of StG on StG day. Utter disgrace. Reason? "potential to cause breech of the peace". WHAT? Should have lamped him.
Thanks - I feel like I was there. Thank you for showing this at the correct speed - even so, I think these were hand-cranked cameras with no speed regulator so the walking speed might not be consistent.
I don't think people disallow Union Jacks, I just think people aren't bothered to put them up.
Amazing footage. Ealing has always been a nice place. It is such a shame that the planners have allowed Ealing Broadway and the Mall to degenerate into a plethora of one pound shops, arcades, downmarket bars and bus lanes.
I have lived between Ealing Broadway Station (Nat West Bank ) and Ealing Common in London for four years . This is just the film of the area. I bought old photos of the very same place in circa 1900 (Ealing-The mall). I can see the tram in the old photoes as well. Thank you! From Tokyo, Japan
Eery to think all those peole in the film are long dead now...............Quite a lot of pageantry with the Union Jacks, Britain at the twighlight of her colonial powers
Things did get worse - there was a world war which brought killing to an industrial level

I didn't say it was because of immigrants, I said it was because of political correctness..Not the same thing at all.
It appears that reading and comprehension were not your top subjects at school
How Ironic.!

@BelvueSchools Ealing got one less bigot, but gained one more moron and clearly got the worst of that deal.
I'm glad you stayed, you deserve each other.
Mind you, nowhere else would really want a multicultural cretin with learning difficulties so you probably had no choice about that.
