Ok, let's make an example: imagine that one day Britain loses its economic importance and becomes a 2nd class country, and that Newcastle upon Tyne is invaded by, say, wealthy Sweden. Of course, people from Newcastle would want to remain under swedish power, since they are richer than before, and it would save their problems. In the meantime, the UK would be forced to acknowledge swedish sovereignty, since it wouldn't be possible for it to hold a war against Sweden. Now, I ask you: is that fair?
That was a 99 year lease... admittedly it lasted for almost 150 but that was after heavy negotiations. This situation is different, the people WANT to be part of Britain and are more proud of their Heritage than the British are.
I doubt the criminal population of Gibraltar is higher, in per cent, than say Germany. Certainly fewer than the U.S. Criminals have political rights too. And they usually want to vote, even from jail. Your point about taxes. I just looked into this because I might wish to live in Gibraltar. Personal tax is 20% of income, after a tax free amount. I will check this again, but at that level it's the same as Britain. You can look this up too if you visit the Gibraltar government website.
Adios.
Why can't we get to an agreement? I'm sure the bitterest for us, Spaniards, isn't that we cannot rule over some dirty, dry rock, but the fact that we are compelled to have an unkind, messy guest in OUR own house. This fact is disgraceful enough to convert full Spaniards into independentists, and we should be proud enough not to tolerate it.
Since an overt war would most probably finish with the Brits nuking us, unable to defeat us fighting face to face, and you would rather not lose your...
morality disguise, that begets such tranquility to your souls,I propose to sink the bloody shit to the depths of the sea once the Britons be sent to Britain,of course, and with the monkeys still all over it,unless you want to make them honorable British citizens,in which case I would suggest you send them to the Berlin zoo,as a gift, and then held a referendum there, you would then have your pretty little piece of England in the continent. The germans won't mind and if they do... hey, they lack nukes
iraniaryan wants to remove Gibraltarians from their homes, which would also take most of their assets. It is precisely this kind of thinking - take over and rob them - which makes the Gibraltarians so suspicious of those who would deny them their basic human rights, and is of course illegal in international law. He forgets that the Treaty of Utrecht confirmed British sovereignty of Gibraltar for ever.
In this modern world there is absolutely no reason why Gibraltar should not be British, if that's what the people there want .And they do They a \re exercising their democratic and sovereign rights. Everyone needs to understand this simple point.
@rafflesman hey, we are completely willing to replace them with Spaniards and then held a referendum!.
They want to be British, fine with me! I'm sure Buckingham palace have enough empty rooms to every one of them.Be British if you want to, but in Britain, not in Spain.
@rafflesman "Exercising their democratic and sovereign rights". Hahaha. Living off the black money of criminals and tax evasion is more accurate. There are far more companies registered there than inhabitants. They want to stay British simply because they are making a killing that way!
Look, I understand why Britons don't want to relinquish their sovereignty. Gibraltar has always been a crucial outpost for the British Empire. But it is still a colony, unfairly taken amidst a civil war.
P.S. I currently live in the Philippines. Filipinos do not want to be a Spanish colony, again. Gilbraltarians are avoiding this mistake. The Basques, Catalonians, and the Andorrans seem to prefer not to be Spanish too. Cheers!
@rafflesman Of course Filipinos don't want to be a Spanish colony again. Neither do Cubans. Yet if you take a look to both countries' history during the 20th century one can't help but wonder if they would have been better off under Spanish rule.
Hundreds of thousands of Filipinos died in a bloody war against the US right after we left, because their new lords simply wanted to keep the place as a colony. American atrocities are well documented (scorched earth campaigns, torture, etc).
@HerrOttoKranz Bullshit. as many Filipinos supported the US as opposed them. US involvement in the Philipines was the best thing that ever happened to them.
@lecagot2 "US involvement in the Philipines was the best thing that ever happened to them"
Yeah, it was so bountiful that more people died in the Filipino-American War which followed that involvement than in the previous 375 years of Spanish rule.
I'm sure you also think that Operation Iraqi Freedom was the best thing that ever happened to Iraqis. That country having enormous oil reserves is of course irrelevant: only democracy matters. The only bullshit I have heard of is American propaganda.
@rafflesman Filipinos only achieved independence after 1946, and it was a rather nominal one. Political instability and repression has been continuous since then.
Cuba was a US protectorate de facto since 1898. It was forced to cede Guantanamo to the US, just like Gibraltar (By the way, do you support stolen sovereignty here too? Who knows, maybe the guards posted there are "exercising their democratic and sovereign rights" as well). It soon became a giant whorehouse for American soldiers.
The Cuban economy was put to serve US interests and the island eventually became a basis for organized crime. It's true that Cuba flourished economically during the 40s, but inequality was huge, which partly led to the late 50s revolution. The result has been a communist dictatorship, economic shortages and oppression.
History vindicates us in both cases.
Ah, and only a minority supports Catalonia and Basque Country independence. Andorra was never part of Spain.
@rafflesman Your argument regarding former colonies or present territories can also be easily countered: do or did the Irish want to rejoin the UK? For decades they were much poorer than England, but proudly independent after many centuries of struggle and oppression. Some Scots want to leave it too, and that does not mean the UK is a bad country at all.
Last but not least, I just said that Gibraltar profits from black money as the fiscal paradise it is. There is no capital gains tax there.
@HerrOttoKranz No I don't think it can be easily countered. The political class of the southern Irish wanted independence, the Gibraltarians do not. There is no capital gains tax in other places, but that doesn't make them black money havens; the Spanish didn't "leave" the Philippines - they were forced out after 350 years of ineffective government. There is no nominal independence in the Philiipines - it is so real they requested the closure of 2 U.S. bases, and graciously the U.S. pulled out.
@rafflesman You don't understand. Ireland was a colony, so what their people could say mattered. Gibraltar is not, so legally it depends on the UK government only.
Gibraltar is a tax haven, that's a fact, depriving us from a lot of tax income in an unfair way.
Yes, we were forced out, but the previous centuries hadn't been of "ineffective government" at all. We built hospitals, schools and infrastructure there. Independence, like in the Americas, was not a matter of bad government.
@rafflesman Was New England badly ruled? I don't think so. A new nation had simply emerged, and rebelled. In fact, the Indians were mostly loyal to Britain.
Furthermore, the Filipino intelligentsia that defended independence origined from the middle class that was formed thanks to 19th century prosperity.
I just said that " Filipinos only achieved independence after 1946, and it WAS a rather nominal one". Back then, of course. My point was that Americans didn't bring much freedom with them.
@rafflesman Just a clarification: in my first post I stated that Gibraltar is "a colony", while in my answer to your reply I say it is not. It is not a contradiction: in the former, I mean "territory unfairly occupied"; in the latter, I refer to what international law understands as a "colony".
@HerrOttoKranz It really amazes me the view of democracy that Spanish Speaking peoples have, If you do what I want , its democracy and you are great, but if not, you are a traitor/fascist/undemocratic/anachronistic.
@almirantepellaeon no gibraltar is british and just rember drake etc raid on cadiz raids on your new world empire, the constant attacks on your merchant shipping your armardas defeat and then subsiquent bankruptcy, battle of trafalgar and many many more to many to mention.
I think Spain should just chill! The people of Gibraltar want to be British, so let them! The Spanish wouldn't be able to control them anyway because they'd probably revolt or something. God Save The Queen!
@Sazzy4rams We don't have the slightest will to rule over them, personally, I think it's more proper to dump them in the sea and kindly let them swim to the rainy island all for themselves.
Gibraltar is British , the problem is that spanish people , not have respect for opinions that not are their opinions, its the same that they are making with my country , catalonia, anyway , keep gibraltar british, god save the queen and visca catalunya lliure.
also it wll be nice that the spanish give you back minorca , and that you make catalan language to be the most speaked again.
When catalonia will become independent you will have in we a strong ally, i expect.
@ptolemy1989 - yes, there is such a legend. When the population started to decline (WW2) new macaques were brought. This is the only population of monkeys in Europe. Probably they were first brought by Moors there.
De-Anglicisation has become a matter of national pride in some places and especially in regions that were once under colonial rule, where vestiges of colonial domination are a sensitive subject.[2][3] As a consequence, anglicised names have been officially discouraged in many places: Ireland's Kingstown has reverted back to its original Irish name of Dún Laoghaire, India's Bombay is now Mumbai
@GLORD99092 and your point being? Oh and before you think i am anti Gibraltar....i love the place and have many close friends there who i know most certainly don't want to be Spaniards lol.
i sugest you look and gain a better understaning of finance the markets and the diversity of international ecomines and the problems of a european single currency on the UK before you formulat your own oppinines as the ones you hold now are fataly flawwed.
-I have been studying the european union with some interest. The problem isnt so much the economic integration so much as the political integration. Big nations do not work well since power is concentrated. More power, more chance of coruption. We need order, but we need to consider smaller nations. As for a unified currency. The world already thinks in US dollars right?
the world works with many different currencys, the US dollar is a trading base level currency it is totaly different to each nation having to use it as its own currency. you cannot have a single currency that is held and controlled by a powerfull econamy like germany and then expect nations like greece to be tied to the same currency with all its ties like inflation industiral productivity exports etc it cant work. you cannot expect all econmies to be the same
via morgatages etc so if the ECB were to raise interest rate it would not cause a stir on the conitnent but cause havoc over here. im in UKIP as the lib, lab, con have all sold this nation short. you obviously do not under stand greek problems so dont coment on them, and we are not too big to fail nothing is too big to fail, franch and germany did not rely as heavily on banking as the UK did, the city of london make up a bigger % of GDP than all og germany and frances major cities put together.
yes by the sounds of things you sre too young i am only 20 years of age but i am fully aware i suggest you wake up and take a proper look at the world and how currencies work and the impact they have on other nations. you cannot have a one size fits all currency with 25 different economies, just look at it this way, if interest rates rise in the UK its a big issue as we have a different economy (and legal structure) to the continent, they rent the majoiry of their property we own ours
you dont get it do you, lagest currency when greece is on its knees, when spain italy and portugal are having the same problems as greece, germany will not be able to bankroll the whole euro. if you cant understand why the EURO for the uk would be a bad thing then i feel very sorry for you.
...continued may have wreked this nation and its economy but at least we had controll over interest rates our currency and inflation etc, giving away our currency woul be suicidal and the mere though of it is disgusting, you and your europhylic ideas disgust me the EU and its one size fits all policy does not make life easier, you are living in cloud coo coo land.
ukip was founded by ex tories our two members of the house of lords were conservaitve peers but we are no longer that we are a party in our own right and in my consituency, we have been getting most of our converts from the liberal and from ex labour voters and mebers. we want more than leaving the EU, and we want many things that are totaly different from the conservaitves. you want to be in the EURO lol my god you must be mad or stupid, look at greece spain portugal etc gordon borwn may have
no the argenitnes wisly said they will not use military force, and baring in mind we have owned the falklands before argentina ever existed and we have every right to drill for oil in our territiroy its non of argentinas bussines, the falklands are ours the people there are british, it is our responcibility we will deal with it.
it does not matter why gibraltar was taken by both british and dutch forces, that fact is it was taken it was ceded to us on and 14 time spain has tried to get it back but failed 300 years have now past gibraltar is british the people there want it to remian so, it is not up to spain nor britian but the people of gibraltar. yes we do own it on paper, the peice of paper is called the treaty of utretch. and the latter part of your "reasoning is just rubbish. gibraltar is british end off.
what a load of rubbish spain gave us gibraltar by treaty it has been ours for over 300 years that just as old as the UK itself. gibraltar has everything to do with us 33,000 loyal subjects of crown have everything to do with us, and shame on you for thinking otherwise, yes we have issues here in the UK and spineless people like you have done nothing to make it better all you have done is make it worse. 13 years of socialist labour has sent this nation down the swannie and shme on you for it.
I see from your comments that it is YOU who hates the Gibraltarians. Gibraltar does not hate the Spanish people, Just because we want to maintain our identity you feel we are anti-spanish. WRONG. You are proud to be Spanish, and I am proud to be a British Gibraltarian. To explain what this mean is that my identity is Gibraltarian and my nationality is British, this does not mean we are anti spanish. You have very little knowledge on the subject.
You resort to insults because you have no arguments, I can see that you are an ignorant on the subject. You lost Gibraltar in 1704 . Then ceded the territory in 1713 under the treaty of Utretch. Read more and learn.
why should the border be closed? if the border is closed then no workers can move between neither can any goods, why should thousands of people be put to a disadvantage becuase of your shortsightedness and sour grapes
@rulebritannia1 Mira en Youtube La dictadura kelper. Habla un ingles, saca tus conclusiones pero queda claro lo que dice.Y es extrapolable a los "overseas territory" o territorios robados por la fuerza, como se les debe llamar.
You are an ignorant in the subject. Can't you see the benefits that all those spanish worker are getting from working here. Can't you see that Spanish policies FAILED.
LA POLITICA ESPANOLA SOBRE GIBRALTAR FRACASO. Eres un ignorante en el tema.
fair enough! but do u agree wid bnp policies? as ur so patriotic to the united kingdom! whats ur views on scotland, deevolutinising from the United kingdom, they want independance dont they.
of course i do not i am a UKIP supporter libertarian non racist non sectarian party. a certain group of people in scotland want independacne but it is bigged up more than it is realy supported. devoloution is a fact it has happend but i feel if one home nation has it then so should all the rest on the same ground with the same powers.
media can manipulate so many peoples and minds. But i dont seem to understand, why if your from kent so attached to a peice of rock in the mediterrean. Look what happened to hong kong in 1999. And look at hong kong now. i find it annying, that overseas get british passports, which causes population explosion, and migration problems.
trust me the people of gibraltar are not sheep like the people in the UK. i may be from kent but im also british im proud of our past and having been to gibraltar and knowing their history they are also just as british as i am, and gibraltar is not just a rock its peoples homes and heritage. people from people from our overseas territories including HK have had virtualy no affect on the UKs immigration rpoblem if anything they are the sort of people we want in the UK.
and the people of HK were betrayed by micheal howard and given BNOP wich are worthless, i find it disgusting that an eastern european has more right to live in the UK than someone from gibraltar or HK one set of people having deeply rooted ties to the UK and the others having no ties what so ever, its a travasty. in our time of need our overseas territories helped us the fact that our gov turnes their back on them is terrible
its british, so tough. it been british for over 300 years it was given to us by spain and we are going to keep it. and when G Brown destroys the city of london allot of those companies will move to our overseas territires.
Britian is Home to the the royal queen, Elizabath 2nd. It evidently seem, that britain should be first priority than oversea terrorites, as its home to to important people. The reason why i say is, i just think imperalism still exists, which isnt good. i am sure theres ppl in gibralatar that want independance, let alone returning to spanish sovergnity.
the uk has its own gov and gibralter has its own self government, so gib is no burdon to the UK in anyway shape or form. and gibraltar is home to important people too they are call gibraltarians. and there are a hadnfull of people that want gib to be spanish just look at the last referenda, it was like 30,000 for being british and 20 for being with spain
well, can i ask where about are you from? britain or gibralatar itself?. well i know its british, due to the treaty of utrecht. But however, why should i Let a scotsman, or anyone, destroy the city of London, its the capital of the world. And its home to alot of people. wouldnt you think it would be bizzare, if companies, moved abroad, affecting and not solving the reccesive problems we have now on home soil.
i am from the UK in the county of kent. liblabcon have been sleeping with the EU and the EU is set out to destroy the citiy of london, already we lost the hedgfund bussnines 80%of europes hedgfund companies were in london now nearly all have left. companiens dont care about the nation unless it offers them something good.
Continued: of the people who want nothing of Spain, its a deep seated thing between the Spanish and the Gibraltarians with a long history. The Spanish call them rock apes and on and on it goes. Its a very difficult situation, the best Spain can do is to win the friendship of Gibraltar, from there its still going to take decades, but Britain should not abandon them, self determination is why we fought the Falklands war for one, we cant be hypocrites. Will Spain accept anything less,, who knows?
we have 16 overseas territoires. gibraltar was given to us by spain its is an overseas self governeing territory hardly a colony, it is a matter of self determination. and how on earth is keeping gibraltar making spain low? you have the intilect of a idiot.
Gibraltar was won by an Anglo Dutch force in 1704, I had myself a Gibraltar passport from 1990, essentially a UK assort with the addition 'colony of Gibraltar' written on the front cover
anglo dutch force catured it but then it was ceded to the UK, so it is british now and always will be. and like i said internal self government, a forward thinking extention of the uk.
..Pretty much sums it up, I lived there for a year and a half, unusual to see so many pictures of the queen, in doorways, on walls, in homes and work places. The Gibraltarians definatly see themselves as British no doubt there. The loyalty of the Gibraltarians is unquestionable!
Having lived there I could talk for hours on the subject. The real problem here if you can call it that is the Gibraltarians themselves who are adamant and intransigent, the whole system is based on British law, British ways.Spain doesn't help matters by border shut downs, petty harrassment, and threats. The Spanish feel their honor is insulted, after all we are allies and geographiclly speaking of course they are right, I think the British would be open to discussion but for self determination.
i have been to gib many times as i have family there on the red sands rd and being british for 300 years is going to leave its mark, gib is to have a new airport and new marina this proving many many jobs wich could benifit local spain. from what i feel the gibralterians cant stand spain interfearing and being like a child as they see it. the UK is in tri party talks but there will never be any real talking on soverightny
@hoplite1766 I agree, but if spain held a small piece of britain, would they give it back out of good will? I strongly suspect not. Especially if international law said that it was rightfully theirs. What I mean is if the tables were turned, the people of the UK wouldn't like it, but similarly spain wouldn't give the territory back either. It would be the same situation, just the other way round. They wouldn't act any more "honourably" than we are now.
Sky!green, though you may be an unpleasant individual, lacking the ability to debate without hurling metaphorical faeces, you do have a sort of embryonic point. So, when Spain compensates all those whom it drove from their homes to create cCeuta and Melilla, and when all those of European descent withdraw from Argentina, returning the land to the indigenous people, your hate-filled drivel may make some sense. Keep trying;inside you I´m sure there´s a rational person somewhere
most european powers still have overseas territroies spain even still has bits of portugal that you wont give back, spain gave us gibralater forver and we will keep it with the will of the people. it is what they want.
@spakw59 Why don't keep the last peices of the British Overseas terriories? I mean they don't harm anyone do they now? Besides it is some value in them; The Falklands are expectet to keep values of oil and gas beneath them so they're of some economic value, pluss the British Overseas territories work like strategic positions for the Britishe Armed Forces. Kind of funny that the falklands war in the 80's paid off after all.
No me escribas mas, gilipollas.Pierde el tiempo con los britanicos o con su puta madre.
Love The Rock and its people! between Gibraltar and Spain there is no comparison. Ty for the vid ^^ and ty to the Gibraltarians for fighting so hard to maintain their close ties with the UK
If Gib ever were returned to Spain what would become of the 30,000 people who currently call it home? after many years of being bullied by their hostile neighbour they could hardly be expected to stay under the yoke of a hated oppressor. Who, then, would house & feed them? The UK? What of their property? Would Spain move "settlers" into the homes of those they´d driven out? How would the legitimate owners be compensated?
Rulebritannia1; I´m sorry, you´re quite right. That´ll teach me to research things thoroughly before I open my big mouth!I grew up in Buenos Aires but left abruptly at the beginning of hostilities after being attacked by a mob of Argentine boys on my way to school. It´s a v a s t place; they´ve so much empty space that they don´t use. Why do they all care so much about a tiny bit more space?Shouldn´t they "at least set their own lands in order", to paraphrase T.S.Eliot?
So, Mr. Makokun9, are you going to tell us why?No, by the way, I´m not Gibraltarian; I´m just interested in your reasons. The Rock is a beautiful and fascinating place, packed with archeological treasures. Why would you want to see all that lost beneath the sea? They ARE bloody hopeless drivers, I´ll give you that, but then the Spanish are no better
Mr. MeridionalFinisterre, however unpleasant an individual he may be, is correct in that the Argentine claim on the Falklands is stronger than Britains. Wht a shame he can´t enjoy an exchange of views without resorting to racism and homophobia. What percentage, Mr. MeridionalFinisterre, of the untrained boys who died horribly on the Belgrano were gay? Didn´t make much difference to their final moments, did it?
argentinas claim to the falklands is not stronger than the UKs the UK has had issue over those islands before argentina ever existed, so they have no claim
Nice anthem/history for these folks. I am happy for them. If they wish to stay in the British fold; I cant say I blame them. At the status quo, they maintain their identity& prosper economically in their own way. If they really wanted to repatriate with Spain; Im sure they would do so. The people there want to maintain their status; which should be okay with Britain and Spain. They a geographic anomalies; like San Marino, the Vatican, etc. These, which makes one think that they prefer to be.
Plenty of native-americans and mestizos in Mexico, Central America and South America. You couldn't say the same about North America (namely the U.S) where the "civilized" English settled. Not much native-americans/mestizos left these days in New Jersey, Virginia, Massachussets, Pennsilvania, New York, Maine, Connecticut, etc...
Who were the real assasins, you CUNT??
There are 2 words for what the English did in America, APARTHEID first and GENOCIDE later. Hitler was a saint compared to u lot
every European nation has the blood of innocence on it's hands, in fact, every culture does. So let's deal with current atrocities, not argue about the past.
Aha you know Fuck all. During the American War of Independence British officials led the Mohicans out of America and gave them land in Canada, no damned Frenchmen! Lets be honest most of the native Americans and Blacks are actually there because...
A. The British gave them land there.
B. Britain freed them from slavery and brought them to Canada.
So go get bent pal, learn your history before you spit that biased generalised and opinionated bullcrap at people. Britain was a saint compared to all.
It's only that he "forgot" to mention that prior to those events, the british settlers, helped by His Gracious Majesty's armys exterminated most of the native americans on the east coast and Terranova. And the ones who liberated the black slaves where the same ones that brought them there from Africa to become slaves. Supported by the Portuguese, of course. That was their main business, after all. ahh, portuguese guinea...
The French were the only ones among all the colonial powers that treated the native americans well. Wether that's because they were outrageously outnumbered in La Nouvelle France and needed the indians for their fur trade, we'll never know. They didn't have slaves in Canada either. Kinda complicated to grow sugar, cotton or tobacco over there... but they had huge numbers of slaves in Haiti.
Gibraltar is British, if you were to take it back then that would be against the wishes of 98% of Gibraltan's and would make Spain seem like the China of Europe. Patriotism and history aside, taking over Gibraltar would do more harm to Spain than good.
If you believe in democracy then accept British sovereignty, if not then you're just a terrible person and get off youtube.
democracy? ask 40 million Spanish people, ask the spanish parlament, ask U.N. (except UK, every country in the world voted in favour of Giving Gibraltar back to Spain...) We only claim for justice. don´t forget that. We spanish people will never forget the crimes of british people in this country.
Britons don´t ask the gibraltarians when they uses Gibraltar as a dangerous militar base. Where´s democracy there? that´s just hipocresy...
Gibraltar up to now has allways been a symbol of enmity between two nations, it was stolen, took by force, and Spain was OBLIGED to sign a treaty in exchange of peace...Today we would call that terrorism...no less... and you talk about democracy??? not only that a big part of gibraltar was stolen last century without any excuse or treaty. Spanish people were by law forbidden to stablish in gibraltar only becase of being Spanish...until only 20 years ago.... Is that what you call DEMOCRACY?
Yet in all your ravings you fail to mention how Gibraltar wants to remain a British territory, and at the end of the day it's up to them to decide their own future, after that everything else is irrelevent. And that's the bottom line.
Of course the whims of a fiscal paradise population´s, where there are more companies than inhabitants (that´s fishy indeed...) are more important that respect to law and international legality...the opinion of a drug smuggling centre must
Ok, let's make an example: imagine that one day Britain loses its economic importance and becomes a 2nd class country, and that Newcastle upon Tyne is invaded by, say, wealthy Sweden.

@ HerrOttoKranz

You can look this up too if you visit the Gibraltar government website.

iraniaryan 7 months ago
iraniaryan wants to remove Gibraltarians from their homes, which would also take most of their assets.

Everyone needs to understand this simple point.
rafflesman 8 months ago 7
@rafflesman hey, we are completely willing to replace them with Spaniards and then held a referendum!.
They want to be British, fine with me! I'm sure Buckingham palace have enough empty rooms to every one of them.Be British if you want to, but in Britain, not in Spain.
iraniaryan 7 months ago
@rafflesman "Exercising their democratic and sovereign rights". Hahaha. Living off the black money of criminals and tax evasion is more accurate. There are far more companies registered there than inhabitants. They want to stay British simply because they are making a killing that way!
Look, I understand why Britons don't want to relinquish their sovereignty. Gibraltar has always been a crucial outpost for the British Empire. But it is still a colony, unfairly taken amidst a civil war.
HerrOttoKranz 4 months ago
@HerrOttoKranz . Please see above post. And..
P.S. I currently live in the Philippines. Filipinos do not want to be a Spanish colony, again. Gilbraltarians are avoiding this mistake. The Basques, Catalonians, and the Andorrans seem to prefer not to be Spanish too. Cheers!
rafflesman 4 months ago
@rafflesman Of course Filipinos don't want to be a Spanish colony again. Neither do Cubans. Yet if you take a look to both countries' history during the 20th century one can't help but wonder if they would have been better off under Spanish rule.
Hundreds of thousands of Filipinos died in a bloody war against the US right after we left, because their new lords simply wanted to keep the place as a colony. American atrocities are well documented (scorched earth campaigns, torture, etc).
HerrOttoKranz 4 months ago
@HerrOttoKranz Bullshit. as many Filipinos supported the US as opposed them. US involvement in the Philipines was the best thing that ever happened to them.
lecagot2 3 months ago
@lecagot2 "US involvement in the Philipines was the best thing that ever happened to them"
Yeah, it was so bountiful that more people died in the Filipino-American War which followed that involvement than in the previous 375 years of Spanish rule.
I'm sure you also think that Operation Iraqi Freedom was the best thing that ever happened to Iraqis. That country having enormous oil reserves is of course irrelevant: only democracy matters. The only bullshit I have heard of is American propaganda.

HerrOttoKranz 4 months ago

@rafflesman *have been -sorry-
The Cuban economy was put to serve US interests and the island eventually became a basis for organized crime.
HerrOttoKranz 4 months ago
@rafflesman Your argument regarding former colonies or present territories can also be easily countered: do or did the Irish want to rejoin the UK? For decades they were much poorer than England, but proudly independent after many centuries of struggle and oppression. Some Scots want to leave it too, and that does not mean the UK is a bad country at all.
Last but not least, I just said that Gibraltar profits from black money as the fiscal paradise it is. There is no capital gains tax there.
HerrOttoKranz 4 months ago
@HerrOttoKranz No I don't think it can be easily countered. The political class of the southern Irish wanted independence, the Gibraltarians do not. There is no capital gains tax in other places, but that doesn't make them black money havens; the Spanish didn't "leave" the Philippines - they were forced out after 350 years of ineffective government. There is no nominal independence in the Philiipines - it is so real they requested the closure of 2 U.S. bases, and graciously the U.S. pulled out.
rafflesman 4 months ago

HerrOttoKranz 4 months ago
@rafflesman Just a clarification: in my first post I stated that Gibraltar is "a colony", while in my answer to your reply I say it is not. It is not a contradiction: in the former, I mean "territory unfairly occupied"; in the latter, I refer to what international law understands as a "colony".
Sorry for the confusion.

-I have been studying the european union with some interest. The problem isnt so much the economic integration so much as the political integration. Big nations do not work well since power is concentrated. More power, more chance of coruption. We need order, but we need to consider smaller nations. As for a unified currency. The world already thinks in US dollars right?
tictactoechicken123 1 year ago
the world works with many different currencys, the US dollar is a trading base level currency it is totaly different to each nation having to use it as its own currency. you cannot have a single currency that is held and controlled by a powerfull econamy like germany and then expect nations like greece to be tied to the same currency with all its ties like inflation industiral productivity exports etc it cant work. you cannot expect all econmies to be the same

rulebritannia1 1 year ago
yes by the sounds of things you sre too young i am only 20 years of age but i am fully aware i suggest you wake up and take a proper look at the world and how currencies work and the impact they have on other nations. you cannot have a one size fits all currency with 25 different economies, just look at it this way, if interest rates rise in the UK its a big issue as we have a different economy (and legal structure) to the continent, they rent the majoiry of their property we own ours

media can manipulate so many peoples and minds. But i dont seem to understand, why if your from kent so attached to a peice of rock in the mediterrean. Look what happened to hong kong in 1999. Its a very difficult situation, the best Spain can do is to win the friendship of Gibraltar, from there its still going to take decades, but Britain should not abandon them, self determination is why we fought the Falklands war for one, we cant be hypocrites. Will Spain accept anything less,, who knows?

anglo dutch force catured it but then it was ceded to the UK, so it is british now and always will be. and like i said internal self government, a forward thinking extention of the uk.

..Pretty much sums it up, I lived there for a year and a half, unusual to see so many pictures of the queen, in doorways, on walls, in homes and work places. The Gibraltarians definatly see themselves as British no doubt there. The loyalty of the Gibraltarians is unquestionable!
hoplite1766 2 years ago
it would be good to see better relations with spain but this is still a very long way off
rulebritannia1 2 years ago
Having lived there I could talk for hours on the subject. The real problem here if you can call it that is the Gibraltarians themselves who are adamant and intransigent, the whole system is based on British law, British ways.Spain doesn't help matters by border shut downs, petty harrassment, and threats. The Spanish feel their honor is insulted, after all we are allies and geographiclly speaking of course they are right, I think the British would be open to discussion but for self determination.
hoplite1766 2 years ago
i have been to gib many times as i have family there on the red sands rd and being british for 300 years is going to leave its mark, gib is to have a new airport and new marina this proving many many jobs wich could benifit local spain. from what i feel the gibralterians cant stand spain interfearing and being like a child as they see it. the UK is in tri party talks but there will never be any real talking on soverightny
rulebritannia1 2 years ago

Kind of funny that the falklands war in the 80's paid off after all.

spakw59 1 year ago

Del360T 2 years ago
Rulebritannia1; I´m sorry, you´re quite right. That´ll teach me to research things thoroughly before I open my big mouth!I grew up in Buenos Aires but left abruptly at the beginning of hostilities after being attacked by a mob of Argentine boys on my way to school. It´s a v a s t place; they´ve so much empty space that they don´t use. Why do they all care so much about a tiny bit more space?Shouldn´t they "at least set their own lands in order", to paraphrase T.S.Eliot?
Del360T 2 years ago
what l r u on about, if you did your research then you would have know that argentina has no claim what so ever.
rulebritannia1 2 years ago
Because, they need somthing to maintain some kind of national pride in their backwards country.
Stupidly they think that invading and "re-capturing" a group of sheep farming islands will do this. Very sad...
paulm1285 2 years ago
Del360T 2 years ago
Del360T 2 years ago
argentinas claim to the falklands is not stronger than the UKs the UK has had issue over those islands before argentina ever existed, so they have no claim

These, which makes one think that they prefer to be.

yes, slavery forbidden hahaha tell that to the incas and the rest of the south american you murdered

No, we did not.
Ah, Le Canadá. Thanks to the French there still are native americans and mètis there. All Canada should be French.
Sky1green 2 years ago
Aha you know Fuck all. During the American War of Independence British officials led the Mohicans out of America and gave them land in Canada, no damned Frenchmen! Lets be honest most of the native Americans and Blacks are actually there because...
A. The British gave them land there.
B. Britain freed them from slavery and brought them to Canada.
So go get bent pal, learn your history before you spit that biased generalised and opinionated bullcrap at people. Britain was a saint compared to all.

boer war?
albertaforalbertans 2 years ago
Well, BriGBM is right.
Sky1green 2 years ago
The French were the only ones among all the colonial powers that treated the native americans well. Wether that's because they were outrageously outnumbered in La Nouvelle France and needed the indians for their fur trade, we'll never know. They didn't have slaves in Canada either. Kinda complicated to grow sugar, cotton or tobacco over there... but they had huge numbers of slaves in Haiti.
Sky1green 2 years ago
they are encalves and in Morroco, so why do you complain if Gibraltar is british, que farso son todos ustedes, long live british Gibraltar
eliocool58 2 years ago
Gibraltar is British, if you were to take it back then that would be against the wishes of 98% of Gibraltan's and would make Spain seem like the China of Europe. Patriotism and history aside, taking over Gibraltar would do more harm to Spain than good.
If you believe in democracy then accept British sovereignty, if not then you're just a terrible person and get off youtube.
Apachecatdog 2 years ago 3
democracy? ask 40 million Spanish people, ask the spanish parlament, ask U.N.
Where´s democracy there? that´s just hipocresy...
we are tired of insults and being robbed
hidalgocastellano 2 years ago
Gibraltar up to now has allways been a symbol of enmity between two nations, it was stolen, took by force, and Spain was OBLIGED to sign a treaty in exchange of peace...Today we would call that terrorism...no less... and you talk about democracy??? not only that a big part of gibraltar was stolen last century without any excuse or treaty. Spanish people were by law forbidden to stablish in gibraltar only becase of being Spanish...until only 20 years ago.... Is that what you call DEMOCRACY?
hidalgocastellano 2 years ago
Yet in all your ravings you fail to mention how Gibraltar wants to remain a British territory, and at the end of the day it's up to them to decide their own future, after that everything else is irrelevent. And that's the bottom line.
