  • I wanna see them go down now :U

  • is that the pitot tube at 3:03? thanks anyone.

  • He didn't go to the moon.

  • For ducati0000, you know the earth is in it's 3rd atomsphere, has had over 5 major extinctions, has been having ice ages for over 1,000,000 years in a row alternating, and you are arrogant enough to think that humans in the past 100 years or so have been able to have more power than the entire geological aspect of the earth and can somehow alter the earth, even though the earth is not perfect, has never been, and is in constant change.

  • @sklaterjd This is how the average leftist idiot in the USA thinks. People who think like this are the ones so easily led astray by Gore and others like him. Sad and very scary at the same time.

  • @tripleheshy BBC is doubleplusgood fullstop

  • its sad to think some deluded morons actually think the landings were fake.

  • Comment removed

  • The planet be perfect if its wasnt for humans.

  • it s for top gear ?

  • union jack badge should be there !

  • BBC 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 and 10

  • Dear James,

I like to know if you could see start up there?

    Peace to you

  • Lego houses, trips to the moon... this guy has got everything I wanted when I was 5.

  • whats the song in the part where the plane is taking off?

  • @slapnotch "When the Levee Breaks." Led Zeppelin. Zep Rules.

  • Today (21 Jun 2010) is the 1 year anniverssary of the release of the two James May documentaries (James May on the Moon & James May at the edge of space) on BBC 2 & 4.

    Happy Anniverssary Bassdog!!!

  • james may + high speed = Ken Dodd

no wonder he's captain slow XD

  • Why would you come back? lol

  • 1:35

    Cabin decompression test?

  • lol, the u2 pilot has ashtrays instead of eyeglasses. how can he still fly?

  • it was a u2 spy plane

  • Holly shit!!!!!

    Can anybody answer my question!??

    What black plane was that????

I though only a challenger space shuttle can fly in space!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • That's a U2. Spy plane from back in the 1960's. We still use them to some extent. And plenty of aircraft can fly to the edge of space. A U2 can't reach exit velocity like a rocket or the Space Shuttle system can however.

  • wow really? the challenger was only one space shuttle. there are actually a few of them. as a couple of people have mentioned already, that is a u2 spy plane, modified for training would be my guess (tandem cockpit).

  • Its U2 spy plane, and they only fly at about 60,000 feet. Space starts around 300,000 feet. The Sr-71 on the other hand can travel at 80,000-100,000 feet at around mach 4.

  • @ommarwin

dude they sent an F-15 up just about that far

  • @ommarwin Who's a special little human. Yes you are!

  • What a lucky SOB!

  • this just came on in America tonight!

  • Everybody looks different in the centrifuge. Some people look mad, some look tired, some look like an evil elf trying to kiss somebody. James is made to look like a methamphetamine addict.

  • Great editing on the sound and song mix here! Who did it?

  • 25,000mph? guess he's not captain slow anymore...

  • @jshnizzlebizzle he didn't ride one...

  • It there something top gear guys haven`t done yet???? HEROES

  • BBC productions are the best, period!

  • @hornetpalooza true.. i absolute love the high quality even the hq music & composition.

  • @hornetpalooza very true,in america all i ever see on the Discovery channel is re-runs,i wish i had the BBC network...

  • @hornetpalooza The BBC need to be apart of film production. Just think what they could create, an amazing thought.

  • @hornetpalooza BBC productions are the best, fullstop!

  • i didnt know top gear liked led zeppelin...

  • I would love to go up in that U2, to that hight...and just pull the fucking rip-cord and float off into space. Fuck ya'all.

  • OMG he looks like a space monkey

  • Almost - but Hamm was hairier than James.

    Cabi~

  • what happening in 1:40?

  • That was a "Rapid-Decompression" in a high-altitude chamber, simulating a sudden (explosive) loss of cabin pressure whereby his Full Pressure Suit must take over to save his life. He went from 30,000ft to 75,000ft in 1/4 or a second.

    Cabi~

  • They change the pressure from sea level to 70,000 feet in a split second.

  • I think he is in a vacuum chamber.

  • beautiful video i'm keeping on seeing it day by day

  • how fun did that look just floting around that would be awesome

  • just look at what May got to see.

NONE of us here will ever get to see that view. I tell ya, im super jelous. haha

Ive see this and it is absolutely BRILLIANT! Cold war relic or not, its still something that should amaze us all no matter where we are from. We are but just human and look at what we can do,

  • Comment removed

  • looks like capt slow could have scored with some or 3 of the ladies in the 'plane flight..haha cool stuff,or right stuff.

  • After this program tonight there was an advert on bbc for the program about the moon landing and there was a song in the backround that appeared in a war film I think. Anyone got any idea what im on about?

  • i no im tryin 2 find the same thing ha ha

  • I found it eventually, it was wrecking me nut lol. Its Buffalo Springfield - For What It's Worth. I knew it was in a war movie and it was, well sort of, it was in forest gump haha. Its also in that lord of war flick so i was on the right track.

  • iff its a piano song its called hopipola

  • Just watched the whole thing and it does leave you humbled to see the planet like that, and it has you wondering why we have to be so bloody petty towards each other. We all live on the same small world so how about we actually learn to share it?

  • It is ironic though, that May was able to appreciate this humbling view from a relic of the Cold War, from a time when we were quite happy to sit around waiting for the bombs to start raining down.

  • What's the second song featured in this video? After Elbow and before David Bowie.

  • Led Zeppelin - When The Levee Breaks

  • Thanks man.

  • what's the led zeppllin track in this one.??

  • When The Levee Breaks

  • already remembered it..but thanks anyway..

  • OMG this looks amazing!!! James is really great to watch, I can't wait to see this.

  • Could anyone tell me the name of the music right at the very beginning of the actual program? The very relaxing piece introducing the moon, because I love it but I just can't track it down =[

  • Drinking in the morning sun

  • Does anyone know what the name of the piano song on the credits of the real program?

I really want to know how to play it but I can't find the name or anything.

    Thanks :D

  • Elbow "One Day Like This" - very good British Band.

  • Comment removed

  • Amazing docu. James May really blew me away with this. And being born at the same date these men set foot on the moon makes it even more personal for me. Kudos for Ty Unwin for composing some amazing music for this BBC doc.

  • i wanna see richard hammond next lmfao

  • No, Clarkson

  • Thx to all the music fans for their help in identifying the music used. I got goose bumps listening to Brian Eno's An Ending (Ascent).

  • Comment removed

  • You shouldn't have put that song over the top of it. The music that was originally put on was much better than yours.

  • just a thought ?? but what if something happened to the pilot up there ? i mean damn how scary would that be !! lol no co-pilot ? wtf ? bonkers

  • James May knows how to fly. It would probably be an epic moment if he had to land that thing, but he might be able to do it.

  • May isn't even allowed to fly a Cessna at night - the U2 jet he was in requires a Chase Car just to help the pilot land the damn thing!

  • Yeah, but James May is super man. He just doesn't have the licence to prove it.

  • That was beautiful :-)

    <3 James

As an atheist I think I finally managed to view Sunday as a 'holy' day:

JM on the Moon, JM at the Edge of Space, NEW Top Gear, Oz and James Drink to Britain, and the inevitable repeats on Dave.

  • what's the name of the song at the start of the video?

  • It's called "One Day Like This" by Elbow

  • fantastic!

  • I hope they do release it on DVD I found it all very interesting and I actually got quite emotional when he reached the edge of space. What a gorgeous view!

  • DVD with both programmes on is out next month.

  • Thanks! I will definitely buy this!x

  • I'm a bit confused about the release date because Amazon has it at one date (9th July) and play has it at another (20th July). This happened with the 20th Century DVD, which has just occured to me that was released about this time last year. My guessing it will be 20th July. You can pre-order the dvd though.

  • i wonder if they will release on dvd

  • Where can I purchase this episode?

  • You were in Good Hands with Cabi...

  • You got that right!!!

    Cabi~

  • Fantastic. especially the part he flew with U-2.

  • a big credit though goes to pilots brave men

  • reminds me a woody allen pic:) floating in the sac bag to find the egg::)

  • damn i want to go

  • During the middle of the actual program there was an emotive piano piece played can anyone tell me what the name of the pice was?

  • The music is called An Ending by Brian Eno

  • Not sure but assuming its Sigur Ros - Hoppípolla

  • if its the one i think it its by ludovico einaudi, its either 'dietro casa' or 'i giorni' i think

  • Way to go Captain Slow

  • the piece used at the very beginning of the actual programme is Brian Eno - An Ending (Ascent)

  • THANKS FOR THAT!!!!!!! I have been trying to find this for years!!!!!!!!

  • Thats the one! Thanks

  • What was the music playing in the background right at the beginning - very haunting

  • elbow - one day like this, off of "the seldom seen kid". cheers.

  • I saw it just a bit ago... and wow... the part in that spy plane was absolutely breathtaking... something i'd love to do once... not very likely to happen though...

  • this was sooo good but what was the music on the actual progamme at the beginning

  • a led Zepplin song cant rememebr which one

  • I'd love to know the music at the beginning, been after it for years, can anyone enlighten me??

  • Sigur Rós - Hoppipolla

Elbow - One day like this

  • Comment removed

  • It was by the band "Sigur Ros". I recommend getting hold of every song they ever made.

  • I would love to have a drink with James

  • James May is a VERY lucky man

  • Will this ever be on the iplayer?????

  • I can't wait for this to be aired....

  • This looks great!

Seeing the view at 2:35 for real must be amazing!

  • 9pm Sunday night BBC2, after the new series of Top Gear at 8pm, triple dose of James May, believe his show with Oz is on before Top Gear

  • when is this on tv?

  • This sunday at 7 or 9 on BBC1...just google the title and you'll find it.

  • great presenter

  • agreed

  • starts this sunday

  • I can't wait to see tnis show in full - apparently its gonna be on the new BBC channel on Foxtel 'BBC Knowledge' 619 in July!! I love James May - he's hilarious!!

  • 0:45 - Jabba the Hut :o

  • I know I'm not the only one who fancies Mr. May. RAWR! ;-) Can't wait.

Though part of me did die when I realised he'd done an interview for the Daily Fail.

  • Lets face it, James May has to be one of the best TV presenters ever...

  • So true.

  • does anyone know what the song for the first minute or so is called? Thanks!

Looking great - im sure ill be watching it

  • On a day like this - by Elbow...

  • one day like this by elbow. i spent ages trying to find out what the song was last year. i heard it everywhere but never heard the name or who it was by. it's a very good song

  • thanks thats brill! - I've been searching around for AGGESS for it too but never caught its name

  • Great...another James May Show!

(I mean that in a good way)

  • Big step up from the Reliant Robin project.

  • This looks amazing tbh. :)

  • Yet another fantastic James May program!

  • When is this being shown?

  • hopefully in the next few weeks - but i bet it will be worth the wait :)

  • I love his giggling fit on the floor of the plane after flying around a bit.

And those shots of the earth were just breathtaking!!!!

  • I love James so much! Oh man..i feel so bad for him in that thing that goes round and round. lol

  • does any1 no wen its bein shown?

  • Look in 1 of thos TV magazines!

  • men never went to the moon

  • conspiacy teoryest

  • with an over the counter telescope and a lunar map you can find the Apollo landing site. People love to believe the conpiricy theory over the truth because in a weird way it makes the world easier to sort out.

  • This looks like a great show, although the centrifugal force exerted on May's face is nothing less than horrifying.

  • He looked more uncomfortable and effected there than the centrifuge he was in for 20th Century. That must've been pulling some Gs there. I certainly wouldn't be able to go in there and I doubt a certain colleague of May's would either without vomiting.

I love James' sideline documentaries because they are interesting and informative. I love how he adds a degree of fun and enthusiam and his enjoyment is a key ingredient I think to making a programme fun and interesting for people.

  • James is just brilliant at everything he does. Long live captain Slow!

  • Oooh I bet he hates having that US flag on his shoulder @ 2:18. LOL!

I love you, James, and you Brits might make better cars, but we make better ... SPACESHIPS!

    x

  • I suppose the Americans like going up and the British just like going fast on the ground. =)

  • Richard Branson... or the crew of the Endeavour might disagree with you ;)

  • I can't wait for this it looks fun, exciting, brilliant and informative. I believe it's the week after next because there's going to be a preview in the Radio Times, out next Tuesday. So that's two things to look forwards to this (according to the BBC preview site for this there are two programmes) and the new series of Top Gear. Roll on towards the end of the month. This is to celebrate the 40th anniversary.

  • Can't wait for this.

  • no idea when this is being shown, but the sooner the better, he doesn't actually go to the moon but close to the outer edge of the atmosphere, would guess its a one off to celebrate the 40th anniversary

  • whens this on

  • That is absolutely amazing, can't wait.

  • Looks good but sounds like he's doing everything but going on the moon. Still it should be a great series (or one off?)

  • OMG JAMES MAY AND LED ZEPPELIN! This looks SO ace!!

  • Does he actully go ont he moon though?

If he doesn't then thats a bit of a miss-leading title.

  • Well, BBC is one powerful corporation. Not that powerful, though.

  • He should have taken Oz Clarke with him!

  • wow looks awesome.

    What plane are they in?

  • A two-seater U2 spy plane.

  • Thanks.

  • oh it didn't post my comment :( absolutely awesome preview for what looks like an amazing documentary, can't wait to see, lucky sod James is. Bet Richard and Jeremy are uber jealous.

  • absolutely awesome preview, can't wait to see what James had to go through, lucky sod he is, but love every show he does. Bet Richard and Jeremy will be uber jealous haha

  • cant wait to see this, must have been a great experience for james :)
