For ducati0000, you know the earth is in it's 3rd atomsphere, has had over 5 major extinctions, has been having ice ages for over 1,000,000 years in a row alternating, and you are arrogant enough to think that humans in the past 100 years or so have been able to have more power than the entire geological aspect of the earth and can somehow alter the earth, even though the earth is not perfect, has never been, and is in constant change.
@sklaterjd This is how the average leftist idiot in the USA thinks. People who think like this are the ones so easily led astray by Gore and others like him. Sad and very scary at the same time.
Today (21 Jun 2010) is the 1 year anniverssary of the release of the two James May documentaries (James May on the Moon & James May at the edge of space) on BBC 2 & 4.
That's a U2. Spy plane from back in the 1960's. We still use them to some extent. And plenty of aircraft can fly to the edge of space. A U2 can't reach exit velocity like a rocket or the Space Shuttle system can however.
wow really? the challenger was only one space shuttle. there are actually a few of them. as a couple of people have mentioned already, that is a u2 spy plane, modified for training would be my guess (tandem cockpit).
Its U2 spy plane, and they only fly at about 60,000 feet. Space starts around 300,000 feet. The Sr-71 on the other hand can travel at 80,000-100,000 feet at around mach 4.
Everybody looks different in the centrifuge. Some people look mad, some look tired, some look like an evil elf trying to kiss somebody. James is made to look like a methamphetamine addict.
That was a "Rapid-Decompression" in a high-altitude chamber, simulating a sudden (explosive) loss of cabin pressure whereby his Full Pressure Suit must take over to save his life. He went from 30,000ft to 75,000ft in 1/4 or a second.
NONE of us here will ever get to see that view. I tell ya, im super jelous. haha
Ive see this and it is absolutely BRILLIANT! Cold war relic or not, its still something that should amaze us all no matter where we are from. We are but just human and look at what we can do,
After this program tonight there was an advert on bbc for the program about the moon landing and there was a song in the backround that appeared in a war film I think. Anyone got any idea what im on about?
I found it eventually, it was wrecking me nut lol. Its Buffalo Springfield - For What It's Worth. I knew it was in a war movie and it was, well sort of, it was in forest gump haha. Its also in that lord of war flick so i was on the right track.
Just watched the whole thing and it does leave you humbled to see the planet like that, and it has you wondering why we have to be so bloody petty towards each other. We all live on the same small world so how about we actually learn to share it?
It is ironic though, that May was able to appreciate this humbling view from a relic of the Cold War, from a time when we were quite happy to sit around waiting for the bombs to start raining down.
Could anyone tell me the name of the music right at the very beginning of the actual program? The very relaxing piece introducing the moon, because I love it but I just can't track it down =[
Amazing docu. James May really blew me away with this. And being born at the same date these men set foot on the moon makes it even more personal for me. Kudos for Ty Unwin for composing some amazing music for this BBC doc.
I hope they do release it on DVD I found it all very interesting and I actually got quite emotional when he reached the edge of space. What a gorgeous view!
I'm a bit confused about the release date because Amazon has it at one date (9th July) and play has it at another (20th July). This happened with the 20th Century DVD, which has just occured to me that was released about this time last year. My guessing it will be 20th July. You can pre-order the dvd though.
I saw it just a bit ago... and wow... the part in that spy plane was absolutely breathtaking... something i'd love to do once... not very likely to happen though...
I can't wait to see tnis show in full - apparently its gonna be on the new BBC channel on Foxtel 'BBC Knowledge' 619 in July!! I love James May - he's hilarious!!
one day like this by elbow. i spent ages trying to find out what the song was last year. i heard it everywhere but never heard the name or who it was by. it's a very good song
with an over the counter telescope and a lunar map you can find the Apollo landing site. People love to believe the conpiricy theory over the truth because in a weird way it makes the world easier to sort out.
He looked more uncomfortable and effected there than the centrifuge he was in for 20th Century. That must've been pulling some Gs there. I certainly wouldn't be able to go in there and I doubt a certain colleague of May's would either without vomiting.
I love James' sideline documentaries because they are interesting and informative. I love how he adds a degree of fun and enthusiam and his enjoyment is a key ingredient I think to making a programme fun and interesting for people.
I can't wait for this it looks fun, exciting, brilliant and informative. I believe it's the week after next because there's going to be a preview in the Radio Times, out next Tuesday. So that's two things to look forwards to this (according to the BBC preview site for this there are two programmes) and the new series of Top Gear. Roll on towards the end of the month. This is to celebrate the 40th anniversary.
no idea when this is being shown, but the sooner the better, he doesn't actually go to the moon but close to the outer edge of the atmosphere, would guess its a one off to celebrate the 40th anniversary
