  • This is Cohen's hymn to human dignity. The 'nightingales' live up to their name.

  • This song lends itself to such tenderness, such heartfelt emotion. So solitary, yet so universal.. Fantastic..

  • tears came to my eyes BRAVO!!!!

  • awesome

  • Thank you so much for giving us this video John. I love his words...

  • sounds like a mix between Serbia and Russia

  • Song written in 1943 by French resitance heroes Anna Marly and Emmanuel d'Astier de la Vigerie. Translated into English 26 years later.

  • This is a beautiful tribute to Leonard Cohen! You have a marvelous voice, and I am sure Leonard Cohen is very proud of you here and sees what a terrific job you did as well! You honored him beautifully!

  • As an absolute fan of Leonard Cohen, I greet you for this version. Congratulations.

  • mocne!!!

  • bravo

  • PRACHTIG / AWESOME

  • Marvelous! Beautiful.

  • Very nice rendition... but a singer smiling during that song makes it weird...

    Enhora buena.

  • hi john,

good that i see you again, dank u ralph.

  • ty claytonave,

well im back listening, choice was watch a film or music, ? i chooose music today lol. after j, bliemer its roger waters, try comfortabely numb its real kewl. huggs all.

  • This is the most beautiful cover of this wonderful Mr Cohen's song !

  • I think this is a beautiful version of a classic French song. The song was written during world war II to comemorate those who resisted Nazi occupation.

  • I liked it when the kids came on, I loved the man's singing, great orchestration, but I hate the kids bit: they themselves or okay but the voicing is so awful and pretentious with the different vocasl lines and the pronuncitation is the pits, completely ruins the effects. Also you could've given them a mike or two.

  • aprilsprings94 , "awful and pretentious" ?? you are talking about young fellas from Holland singing in French. That's not an easy thing to do. Let see what you can do. Criticism is much easier...... isn't it? you are the pretentious one here

  • I have to admit that I was in a very bad mood when i wrote that, but i resent to being called pretentious. Opinionated, yes, but you had no reason in the world to call me pretentious. Also I hate to disappoint you but despite being english and polish, i am fluent in french. No critiscism is not easier, the lead singer, for example, was absolutely fantastic. I just say what I feel.

  • Eccellente, grazie

  • I love the vocalist, but the addition of the children, live on stage, makes this magical. I'll look for other John Bliemer selections - bravo!

  • YEs the tribute is a true love of Cohen and his work as a singer/Songwriter, The genre from those years when songs meant something and concerts were still cheap enough to get into. seems money rules the world these days, not sure if the singers wanted it to be his way, Haunting beautifull words and melodies.. yes a true tribute to a great singer/songwriter

  • Very touching video!!!

  • Maravilloso!!,felicidades.

    5*

  • Hello Isabel,

Thank you very much for your comment

I'm pleased you like the music, if you want to hear more please go to John Bliemer in search and you will find more. Greetings John Bliemer

  • This is about the 3rd or 4th Leonard Cohen song I've listened to by this man in his tribute. This is by far his best effort. He's not LC, but then, who is? He and the choir and musicians do a very creditable job with this piece.

I'm sure Leonard would be honored by their intentions and efforts. He seems very grateful to anyone who thinks enough of his work to perform it.

  • I don't know who this guy is, but he does a great version of this song, all credit to the school choir singing in French. Many Dutch people also reisted the Nazis, the song has a universal appeal it's about oppossing tyranny.

  • really nice

  • I don't agree, this version is quite joyful when the song depicts the life of a french resistant.

  • great tribute. good job

  • geweldig mooi

    exelent

    briliant

  • excelente

  • Claytonave,

very correct, i just found it amazing and, my wife translated, john is not perfect BUT, an amazing job and here i am watching it again. may i also point out roger waters if you have not seen it yet, andy fairweatherlow is someone i know and does a great job. see (mother) that girl can sing, and to my mind is beautiful.

  • buena tio.

  • Beautiful, and prism1951 you're exactly right, comparisons are odious. also they're singing in French but Dutch people are generally multi lingual as I learned when I lived in Utrecht 77-79 so your wife could likely translate.

  • me quedo mudo.....

  • Bravo legendo.

    Uz tebe je večno ono "N O P A S S A R A N"!

  • magnifique interprétation. merci!

  • Most Cohen covers fall flat on their face (witness the tribute CD from 1995). There are exceptions of course (Joe Cocker's Bird on a Wire, or Fairport Convention), but few can sing Cohen like Cohen can. This version is another great interpretation of one of his most poignant songs. Beautifully done. Ontroerend mooi en welgemeend - geweldig.

  • I must get my dutch wife to interperate for me, but i watch these videos regular. NOW mr Bliemer, get a concert on the road for all your fans please, I am one for sure, AND i would like to meet you and shake your hand, how terrific you all are. and anyone out there saying john is not as good as cohen, GROW UP... its a tribute not a competition. god bless you mr bliemer, almost (EVERY BODY KNOWS ) haha.

  • Bravo! C'est la chanson d' Anna Marly!

  • its a shame its a one off, the guy and the band are great, im in holland but there are NO concerts lined up, hell wot a shame, i would luv a nite with bliemer.

  • Beautiful.Thanks.

  • Leonard Cohen...the great poet...thanks of brazilian's fans.

  • i think you shouldn´t dance too much when you hear lyrics like that

  • its no leonard though!?!?!

  • Favoloso. Complimenti.

  • great tres belle voix

  • congratulations Mr. Bliemer. Delightful song

  • C'est une chanson magnifique :') ^^

  • Great song and great performance, as well. I am proud to live in the country where many of us had very similar experience to this song's. "Freedom soon will come" - how powerful words for those expecting it!

  • Thanks for this song of Anna Marly

  • Thank You,.....how lovely.

  • Thanks Wancd for your compliment I was the accordeon player in this song.

It's also awesome that this video is watched by more than 11.000 people!! Thats just GREAT

  • das mijn mentor :-)

    gr steef C-R1A2

  • It's about time I hear a version with an accordian being played. It adds soooo much more to the mood of the song. Awsome version!

  • super magnifique sans commentaire...chapeau

  • Bravo! It must have been a really great and special occasion Mr Bliemer!

  • insane

  • i can not believe how great this is! i would have paid soo much to be there!

  • Fantastic!

  • An excellent interpretation of this Great song.

    Congratulations...

  • pure class, it's great.

  • Such a spirit... he seems to really understand the meaning and nuances within the song and brings life experience to it. And look at all those beautiful children with their exquisite voices in chorus; and learning Leonard's songs at such an early age. Great musicianship and women back-up singers, too. [I had to break up my comment into three, separate ones.]

  • John Bliemer rocks!

  • How cool is this guy? He has a golden voice. I love it.

Grtzz..

  • klasse!

  • hey....shit man....echt wat gemist..klinkt mooi..misschien volgende keer...groet,J.P.&Stef
