Try watching anything old in Chinese with literal subtitles, or better yet find a friend who can translate literally. While the meaning might be different in their culture, the literal translations often seem bizarre in our culture. All of those "fragrant monkey tail", "lady detectives", etc.

one thing worth pointing out is that it's the Chinese government which has made lots of money, rather than private or public owned chinese companies, so they are not winning by any measure. America is still a much finer place to live and has much better opportunities than China, where you can hardly find clean water or seafood without heavy metal contamination.
