It just goes to show you why the pilot is captain. He knows that ultimately, he owns what happened. This is why captains have full authority to refuse to fly. I'm not blaming him, but I understatnd why he says he is dissapointed. A very humble man... my hat is off to him.
@halnwheels If you look at 1:01 into the video, you can see a cable perpendular to the ground being moved left to right. The cable appears in the white space between the buildings and it is definetely in motion. From other video, I'm thinking this cable was being moved by a ground worker via another cable, and possibly drew this cable into the circular arc of the rotor.
@halnwheels You can see it a lot better in the closer video. the groundsman was flicking it around for some reason. Looks like he flicked it just a bit too much. Pretty cool of the pilot not to just out and say that until the report is out.
@svizerana Well, you wouldn't really be lucky if you weren't in a situation that involved luck. They're pretty lucky because nobody died with a huge spinning blade flying around... no offense but is that not obvious enough?
@daggw03d I do agree with you: these guys were all very lucky. but they all call him 'the luckiest men alive' which i just find weird. Imagine: He says: 'I've just crushed with my helicopter' and the response is: 'you are so lucky'
Sure he was lucky but still he's probably gonna need some sort of counseling. I think the luckiest people alive are those who are in traffic everyday and never get into an accident and can just live there life happily. it's the luck that you don't see.
Pretty dumb to allow a heli to operate in a construction zone. Good job NZ.

@linkszxx Yeah he tried to yank the cable down but pulled the other end into the rotors which cleaved the tail of the heli off. What a muppet.
