No matter there is currently water in it, or not, this thing is scary both ways! A big stupid scary hole. I know it's just a part of that dam, but it's so scary! @_@
@zulu9741 It's a man-made structure. I'm sure it would be unfortunate if you fell in, but with the water levels so low I don't think that is a current risk.
@zulu9741 It would depend largely on whether the dam is a hydroelectric one used to generate power by way of rushing water. Those employ very large turbines that are driven at high speeds by the water to generate electricity. Suffice to say the intake channel of one of those should be avoided, imagine something akin to a powerful blender.
sooo sorry about this but i still don't quite understand :( where exactly does the hole lead to?! could someone survive being flushed down if they had an air mask on? how would they dive back up? where would they come out?!
@nickhansbauer This Glory Hole is part of the Monitcello Dam at Lake Berryessa. When the water actually spills into the hole it is then routed down and out the base of the damn into a river on the other side. The river flows through the Putah Creek State Wildlife Area.
The dam is noted for its classic, uncontrolled spillway with a rate of 48,400 cubic feet per second (1370 m³/s) and a diameter at the lip of 72 ft (22 m). The spillway is also known as 'The Glory Hole'.
thanks for saving me a trip

Lucky you had a handheld rock. You probably couldn't do the same thing with like, a mounted rock or a rock on a tripod.
