  • she has a beautiful voice but it is not strong enough for aida...heather and toni had strong voices..she gets lost

  • The Gods Love Nubia. -_-'

It's set in bloody Ancient Egypt.

  • @thishatandyou If you know the show you would know that the Nubians are captives singing of their homeland. AIDA is becoming the leader that they need at that point in the show.

  • @mabdancer Yes, I know that, hence why they are singing about their Gods. They are taken captives by Egypt and, yes, they are Nubian. They're not singing about one God because they have a polytheistic Nubian religion.

  • She NAILED this omg! Did you hear that F5?? So clear and powerful! Girl got a range on her!

  • u people have no idea what u talkin bout. she carried the role very well.

  • can't carry this role vocally

  • ok, michelle can really sing, ok? but this role is for a deep contralto, so in the context of the musical her vocals don't really suit the part. but she did impress me wiht this, especially the F5 at the end :)

  • *People always fail to recognize just how talented Michelle is. She has a large vocal range and really knows how to use her voice-her voice which in my opinion is very unique and not typical. Go Michelle!*

  • @katycat4ever Maybe she may have been bad then but she is AMAZING now! Trust me! I saw her live as Roxie Hart in CHICAGO last year when she was in London and OMG she OWNED it! Trust me! She was a very convincing Roxie! She can DEFINATELY A C T + SING now! =D

  • I dont know ... theres something about Michelles Aida I ABSOLUTELY DISPISE... IN PERSON.. but when u just hear the vocals it sounds slightly Good .. but never the less its an avg performance that the producers were scrambling to bring in viewers for the failing show...

  • wow!

  • whhhaaaat?!!!!!! Michelle tooooorrree that song up!!! michelles vocals in this song tops everyone that has done it vocal arrange wise!

  • it was good.

  • damn girl. DAMN. that was bangin.

  • The sound quality only pics up her top register. That C5 and D5 was just beyond powerful.

  • Mi Celle My Belle, I <3 U. She was sick in this performance. And she still belt an F. Superb. Who had seen her act before to say that she can't do this part. Obviously, the Casting Director and the Director thought so cuz they gave her the part. I love the Theatre community, but sometimes I am disgusted by the unwarranted scrutiny that talent receives. Its not fair. Bomb performance! I love Michelle!

  • Actually she had no acting experience prior to Aida. She came to see the show and after which she expressed her interest in playing the part. Thats how she got the role

  • i wanna here kelly price's version

  • wat version?

  • kelly prices, she did a different version in the consert featuring, boys 2 men, tina turner, heater headley, elton John, Dru hill and more

  • really? is it on youtube? i would love to hear that!!!

  • idk

  • that's actually the 1999 concept album that you'd be talking about - Boys 2 Men singing Not Me, Tina Turner with Easy As Life, and The Spice Girls with Strongest Suit.

  • YEA

  • This is the song that probably held her whole show as this role. She is a gospel singer. So she sounds very good towards the end. But the rest of the show... I don't think she could pull it off vocally and acting.

  • bitch can belt an F!!! amazing!

  • U BETTER SING MICHELLE...i love Aida i went to see it when Deborah Cox was the star but I wish I saw Michelle and Toni Braxton too....

  • Her voice is great

  • i thought that the other lady out sang Michelle. Did anyone eles think that?

  • YELLS YA Nehebaka blew her ass away!!!

  • from 3:30-to the end was michelle singing just to let you know..... if you think thats Nehebaka

  • yea i no that but wen she sang her solo and the duet they do, Nehebaka outsings her.

  • michelle was good at the end, but the other check just has a better tone to her voice.

  • The great thing that made destiny's child great was the contrast to the three woices. Beyonce had a very strong sassy voice, Kelly had a very sweet, softer motherly voice and michelle has a raspier soulful voice. It works so well, but by herself, its not that impressive for four minutes...i am not trying to sound mean, but this song requires a very strong, well toned voice for its entirety. michelle's belting register is great, but her low notes sound like she has a cold.

  • i couldnt have said it better myself. we all love michelle. its just that this is not the role for her.

  • i agree 100%

  • Many singers who did Aida did their own style. Not everyone can be Heather. I do happen to prefer Heather over everyone, but I think each Aida has something unique that they brought to the role. Doesn't mean it's bad. I think Michelle has a sweet voice. It's not as powerful, but it's still pretty.

  • Yeah she is ok...I am actually playing in Aida as Aida...I do like her rendition though..I have to say I am definately a Heather Headely fan!!

  • For what she has...she did a decent job

  • i'm in this show right now at a community theatre and we are working this song tonight!

  • You should hear her in Color Purple... Shes amazing, I met her and she is quite possible the nicest/sweetest person I've ever met on Broadway! I love Michelle!

  • Anyone would look bad if you compare it to Heather's pure power and strength. I don't think Michelle Williams was well suited for this role, but I think the people insulting her voice are way off. Just because it's not suited for this play/role doesn't make it bad. It's actually very nice.

  • it doesnt matter how hard she "tries"

anyone can try to sing the role, that doesnt mean they can.

  • I like her voice. Its very unique. She has a strong voice, its her interpretation of the song I think some people don't like. Its very jazzy and gospel with a touch of pop. Its very different. But it matches her voice. She knows it well. It makes a great package.

  • I don't like her version that much, but I think it would be better live.

  • It is live.

  • I meant as far as seeing it live.

  • oh gosh, soul schmole... it's not about whether or not she's got soul, brass, or whatever... point is she sounds like cat that someone's trying to throw in a tub full of water

  • I bet you can't hit those notes.

  • I wouldn't bet much if I were you.

  • Oh big talk. We'll see. I don't doubt you with confidence like that.

  • I think that Michelle did her thang on this song and as aida in general. The songs are very hard to sing; and, furthermore, all the versions that I've heard of this song, including heathers, the woman who plays Nebekah ALWAYS COMES IN STRONGER (MIC POWER DAH.)>

  • The way this song is staged, Nebekah does come in stronger than Aida, because she starts to sing just as Aida is drawing a breath at the end of the word "oppressed". However, when Aida joins in to form a duet it should be with a loud enough voice that both of them can be heard. When Nebeka comes in over Michelle, it sounds like her mic is immediately turned down so that her voice does not overpower Michelle's. The whole song sounds like everyone's mic is turned down just so you can hear her.

  • yes. they are hard to sing. that's why they should hire SINGERS to do them... not "soulful," off-voice, whispery R&B performers who claim to be singers.

  • Wait, so R&B is not singing. It's a form of singing just as classical is a form of singing. In fact it has been argued that it is the best form of singing in the world. Just say you don't like Michelle's version instead of dissing an entire musical style with history and a legacy.

  • Congratulations! You are an idiot.

  • seriously though?

you couldve just left it at i dont really like michelle's version

  • thank you I agree

  • She has a good voice, but I think her voice would have been better suited for the part of Nebekah. This is not terrible, but to play Aida your voice needs to have an incredible amount of power, which is what she (in my opinion) lacks. Not meaning to offend anyone, just my opinion.

  • Your are totally correct!

  • there is no reason the girl playin Nehebkah should be overpowering her! I love Michelle dearly but this just wasn't the role for her!

  • she tried. she can only sound so good.

  • you're right. I applaud her! I would love the opportunity

  • not as bad as i thought this was going to be. the ending was really good.

  • Broadway is not a recital. You have to believe that the performer is the role they are playing. You may love her but Broadway is something different. Not my opinion; it's a fact. That's why it's hard to see anybody else in the role but Heather Headley; She makes you believe she's Aida. Now if you really want to see a Aida, you need to see Leontyne Price in the Verdi's Aida: a powerful performance.

  • it sounds like a 12 year old is singing this

  • I thaught the same thing, the role requires someone with more chops

  • People have to realize people have different voices. People should also be open to other styles. I think some people are hating on the soulfulness of her voice. You know those people who hate Soul.

  • @josephjmg18 i don't hate Michelle's voice. in fact, i think it's beautiful. in some of the songs in Aida her voice sounded great. but i think it lacked Aida's strength in other's (Easy as Life); it's TOO pretty, if that makes sense. sometimes, a funky note brings the personality to the role. u've probably already seen Heather Headley, but u should also look @ Felicia Boswell's version. very soulful, yet still strong and full of personality.

  • I think it's pretty funny that the audience started giving her a round of applause right at the end. If this audience had seen Heather, they probably would've been on their feet. I agree that her voice is no where near as strong as other women to play AIDA, but you've still got to give her some props, this was her first broadway lead.

  • I love the song and i even love her voice. But of course the goddess heather headley owned this role. I'm not sure her voice is strong enough for this song. It's suppose to be, at the time she's singing, the inspiration of the enslaved Nubians but it doesn't do that.

  • I completely agree. I like her voice and I think there's something about it that is still very appealing, but she lacks the strength Heather had.

  • her voice isnt mature enough for this part.. it has to be rich and brassy

  • Shes one third of the worlds biggest selling girl group of all time! need say no more....shes an incredible singer. Just watch her singing do you know live in atlanta!

  • Toni Braxton owned this song! this doesn't even compare

  • HEY, I am going to keep it real. If she wasn't a part of Destiny's Child..and she auditioned for this..She wouldn't have lasted a minute. There are plenty of sister who can sing like this..Hell, I am a dude and I could have done better with my falsetto. She just got people in to see the show..No comparison to Toni Braxton..That is a GIVEN and not even worth an arguement to those who can't see that. She is fine for the church choir..not Broadway..Just keepin it real...

  • i like her, but i think it's how she uses her voice. this isn't her best! but i hear she's getting great reviews as shug on the color purple!

  • True, but she wouldn't have gotten that part either if she wasn't with Destiny's Child. I saw the Color Purple. Playing a ho isn't really hard to do and Shug's songs are pretty easy. Now if she were to play Celie! That would be a joke. Maybe I should have reworded my last statement..She is not Broadway LEAD material.

  • that's because her voice is more suited for jazz! i loved how she sang her parts in their "Live in Atlanta" DVD! i think she could be the next mandy moore, with her acting abilities! because whether or not critics like her vocals, her acting chops always receive positive reviews

  • Most of the people who are defending this casting choice really don't the show....she has a perfect voice for Nehebka but not AIDA.... I dont agree with the negativity but I also don't agree with the people who think this is good. I highly doubt any of these people have done the show. And yes I have.

  • i love her

ecxept for the last part when she'll all over the place, that was too much, it doesn't give the leader personality.

  • You it really pisses me of how people are comparing all three of the R&B singers that've played this role. Why can't we all just enjoy the portral of the role these women have played?

  • she sounds like she's 12years old. not syaing she's untalented but not right for this part. just because youre black doesnt mean you should play aida!

  • Her last "the flesh is torn apart" gave me goosebumps!

  • It was kinda weak until the last 30 seconds IMO

  • luv that version, luv her voice

  • Im amazed at how some people are being so negative towards Michelle. The girl can sing!!!!!!!!!! There are always going to be haters trying to pull you down as you rise to success. I think that some of you forget about the time (early stages of destinys child)when everyone was hating on Beyonce by making comments such as she couldnt sing and that her dad didnt care about any of the other girls. Well, look at B now. Some of the same people that were hating on her are loving her now.

  • B-E-Aaaa-Utiful. Michelle you did your thang gurl. Dont let anyone tell you differently. You got mad Vocals!!! KUDOS!!!

  • BAD REALLY REALLY BAD

  • Now I didnt see one comment about Deborah Cox! She was by far the best and to me beat out Heather, if you remember she closed the show out! All my poor rent money, when I lived in NY, went to that theater to see all three of those ladys. But thank God I was never put out.

  • You know what........you are right!!!! Deborah can "blow" and she is my favorite singer out of all the girls who played this role!

  • You know what.......you're right. Deborah Cox is the best singer out of all the ladies who played this role!

  • I think that she did better than Toni Braxton, because her voice is more believable as a slave... but can't NOBODY compare to Heather Headley. The problem is that Heather was classically trained to hit every note with vocal accuracy, and the other 2 are singing church like, which is fine, but won't get you through 2 hours of hardcore SINGING... just my opinion... I love all 3 though!

  • You are kidding, she didn't do better than Toni. This sounds ...... NO NO NO. Toni was way better. You are joking. Plus Toni brought more people in to see the show and had the highest tickets sales than all of the RnB divas... GO LOOK IT UP!!

  • LOL u think toni has range? i don't hate her, but her range is limited and the songs were lowered for her. when it comes to power and being able to "blow" michelle can run circles around her...

  • Not my fav. She's okay. She messed up on one part though. I favor Toni's richness she gave to the song over Michelle's loudness and sounding like my 6 year old sister. All I can say is cute.

  • im sorry but nothing can or will ever beat heather

  • I most definitely prefer the original, Heather Headley. Just because these other girls are famous, does not mean they can compare to those who are Broadway stars.

  • I love this girl! People always say i sing like her, Yummy Bingman and Kierra KiKi Sheard! Michelle Williams reminds me of Surel!

  • we r singing this sonnnng

  • Im sorry she but this song was not her best! It was decent at best!

  • well audio is not good quality, but still, her range and vocal abilities are still wider than toni's

  • I enjoy listening to toni braxton. She is one of my favorite singers. However, i favor michelle williams over toni on this song. Michelle gives me better range (vocally).

  • yes i prefer michelle williams as well... i listened to toni's and i've always thought that toni has limited range. she's got a low voice!

  • I love her version to, Perfer Tonis version but go Michelle..

  • thank you...i love michelle as well but i'm a big toni fan and what people dont understand is that she dose have a great range...it's just not high, it's a lower range, she is different and that is why i like her, her range is a wide varitey of lower notes and she can still get pretty high when she wants to.....trust me i know...lol!

  • michelle can blow! why do people hate?

check out toni braxton singing the same song.

it's my only uploaded video. check it out.

  • I knew Michelle could sing, but I didn't know she had pipes like that at the end...She took me to church with that note and gave me goosebumps...I had to keep rewinding it!!

  • blablabla always beyonce this is mmichelle williams..

  • why did beyonce cum in

  • Based on that riff at the end, I can totally see her playing Elphaba in Wicked! Fierce!

  • I LOVER HER!

  • When she hit that note towards the end, everything was perfect! I wished I could have attened this show and seen it! Ugh!

  • Yes yes yes!!! Lol! The girl can blow!

  • I just heard that BEyonce is going to do the film version of Aida

  • yeah disney is trying really hard to get beyonce to play Aida in the film version, but its not confirmed yet if she really wants to do it bkus she is supposed to take a long break aftr she finishes her tour

  • 4:03-4:13 she rips it ... i keep gettin chills!!!

her rif into her vibrato on 4:11 is sick!!!

  • wooooooow. Michelle can siiiiiiing. I loove this girl.. she gon kill her solo rnb album for shure n she gon blow evry1's mind. You go Michelle.

  • umm yea she killed the whole beggining that sucked! shes not good i wish i could see her acting this i bet she sucks she does not have at all the power to play aida she has a good voice just not for aida

  • her acting's gotten more postive reviews than beyonce's... michelle's got acting chops down!!!!

  • simply amazing... never knew she could sing like dat...get em

  • U go girl!!!!!!!!!!!! sing

  • i had to come back and write another comment of how strong her voice was delivering that high note. i keep playing it over and over!

  • that high note killed it! iv e always love michelle and always nkew she had talent. can't wait until your new cd comes out this fall!

  • I want to see Michelle in the Color Purple. i heard she's gotten great reviews! anyone have clips to that?

  • I didnt know Michelle could blow like that (From 4:01 0n) I walways liked her the most

  • I love michelle but this is an "Eh" performance.

  • im in love with her.

  • good news to all michelle fans! all the reviews i've read in google news are positive! they especially praise her for her acting chops! i wish michelle success - it would be nice if all three DC members were equally successful and powerful stars, yet can share the spotlight and reunite for another destiny's child album...

  • im glad someone finally showed michelle's real talent..she rocked in destiny's child but if she woulda had more parts like this it would been way better

  • anyone have actual clips of her on broadway? i wanna see it both "Aida" and "Color Purple" clips.......

  • Yeah. I looked around on the net, and according to the stuff I read, both Michelle and Beyonce are mezzo-sopranos. Kelly is a spinto-soprano and has the highest voice of the three.

  • i actually think michelle might have a more powerful voice than kelly because most of the songz kelly singz she sings it in her false-setto....michelle can actually hit those notes full out...but i could be wrong but beyonce is a mezzo-soprano...sumtimes they all just shock me..lmao.

  • wow Kelly a Spinto Soprano??? That kind of Soprano is rare.

  • woaw! Chelle rocks! awesome

  • shes pretty on dat pic...beyoncé is stealing her spotling, michelle sure can sing!!!

  • no beyonce was stealing her spotlight, spotlight, spotlight, spotlight, spotlight!!! haha. check out the emotions parody by madtv if you dont understand me.

  • i know exactly whaT you ARE talking about..LMBO

  • Sound like a small young girl

  • If she sounded like this everytime she sang live, I think a lot more people would have understood when she was in DC and like her voice more instead of saying she cannot sing.

  • I actually went to see her when she did this. She was excellent! Now she's doing the Color Purple in Chicago! Go Michelle!!!

  • Thanks for posting :-)

  • AWESOME! Her voice sounds so much better and clearer and fuller compared to her Destiny's Child sound. I'm a big fan of DC and Michelle, but this was the best of her of anything I've ever heard!!!

  • this is my girl

  • "It's toooooorn apart!" When i first heard that i bout fell outta my chair! That's my girl!

  • She sounds better when she sings higher. Her voice sounds stronger and everything. Love it.

  • When you can hear her, she sounds really good.

  • SAAAAAAANG Miiiiiiichelle

  • why is the sound so fussy. what is the name of the song. why did she perform it. love michelle williams

  • she was on broadway -- in the leading role in AIDA -- back in 2003-2004!

  • thanks for your help.
