     LEGEND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thx Christ there were no mines in Ireland.

  • It is Ewan Macoll's song and Luke Kelly does an excellent and meaningful rendition of it. Music is meant to be shared and enjoyed and to insipre us This song and performance does all of that . Thanks and more power to the great singers and song writers. You can't put down good music and good singing. Just enjoy it.

  • i thought it was ewan macolls song ?

  • Just sit and listen to the magic that was Luke & the Dubs.

  • Im Proud To Be Irish Beacuse Of This Man

    And Phil Lynnot

  • school days over was written by an english man..

    WHO GIVES A FLYING FUCK.

its impossible to go on any video on youtube and not find some stupid little twat that spends there life finding faults..in everything.

The fact is, what use is a song if theres no1 to sing it? if ye're so proud of being english then why did ye look up the version, by an IRISHman? Get a life, and stop finding reasons to make at this great mans work. fair play @kellyoneill for bringing Lukes music to us. R.I.P

  • great socialist song, the story of so many working class people over the world

  • I come from a pit village,Sutton Manor in Lancashire, pit has long gone, this song has superb historical verse,'

When you left school you went down the pit,

    Luke Kelly is superb.

  • Luke Kelly you Absolute Legend! Probably the best ever. Weather or not this song is Irish, English, Welsh or Scottish. The Man is unreal not matter what song he sings. One things for sure Luke Kelly Was Irish Through an Through and that makes me Proud to Be Irish too!

  • Luke Kelly you Absolute Legend! Probably the best!

  • great great song by a legend in luke R.I.P, dont think its about ireland though, written bt ewan mccoll, miners etc welsh, english, anyone know exactly ???

  • @moccasin10 It's English, I've already said...

  • my school days were made great by luke.

  • The song was written by Ewan Maccoll, Scots, not that that has any relevance to either the brilliance of the song and the brilliant performance by Luke.

Kelly, thanks for all your wonderful postings of Luke's work.

    Lewbook

  • @lewbook Ewan was English: he was raised and born in Lancashire, his parents just happened to be Scottish migrants.

  • @djsmurfie that makes him SCOTTISH not englisn who just happened 2 live ther

  • @Hitit4life Wrong. He was born and raised in England, so he's English. My parents are Irish and yet I was born and raised in London - am I Irish then? Use your head you moron.

  • @djsmurfie yes that makes u IRISH. but if your happy 2 give your parents the finger & kiss the queens arse then kiss away.

  • @Hitit4life No it doesn't you muppet. So anyone with the surname 'Percy' or 'Frazer' instanty becomes Norman French? You're an idiot.

  • THE song for all the miners and in memory of our grandfathers, uncles, fathers, brothers and husbands working hard in the pitts wheresoever.

  • Coming from a Lancashire mining village, this song represents what happened after school in Sutton Manor.

    You went down the pit.

Superb song about pitmen from wherever.

  • @geofflovett you are absolutely right!! exactly how it was!!!

  • Comment removed

  • it reminds me of my mum who thought Luke was a god...I still remember her singing this song

  • Awesome. Simply awesome. RIP Luke.

  • thanks for this

  • fuck off ya english prick! tá agoithin amhrán as gealann againn ná bach le na amhrán ón bhreatain..

  • To stay in whatever language you are all speaking,, The song is Exactually written about Welsh miners, Written by a Lancashire born man, ( Ewan McColl) whose parents were both Scotish,,and if iI may say, Sang best by an Irish man, so by my reckoning, it belongs to us all.

  • @ginty97 I know it's an old comment, but well said!!

  • school would have being so much better with luke beside you.

  • thank God im Irish!

  • Chomh corraithùil...

Go raibh maith agat, Luke. I bParthàs go raibh tù go sior

  • This is the first Luke Kelly song I heard. Thanks Mum.Everything in this song is so beautiful ,But i think me mum was trying to get me to try harder at school, irony hey?? All i've ever done since is earn enough to have a beer and sing songs like this.

  • everyone listen to the version by Damien Dempsey & The Dubliners on here. See what ye think......

  • one of me favourites good aul luke rip

  • my 11 year old daughter loves this song and knows it word for word!!!

  • its great that your daughter is listening to this kind of music.please god she will pass it on to her kids too.luke kelly is such a legend,as is ronnie and the rest of the boys also RIP

  • Itpainsme to hear Irishchildren speaking in an American accent almost subconsciously as they're bombarded daily by TV shows like the Hills/ MySuper Sweet16( I would like to seriously injure most of the participants iN theseshows) nd r Americanized.i'mnotsaying thatIreland 20/30 years ago was a utopia but at least our culture wasn't being overtaken byhegemonic Americanculture of odaywhichsends out all the wrong messages to the youth in my opinion! It's da stuff of men like De Valera's nightmares.

  • Its nice to keep this type of music going through the generations, its nice that your daughter can listen and appreciate this music and not be desensitized by that manufactured American tripe which is so prevalent today and dilutes native culture the world over with their materialistic/ self indulgent shit music nd culture , miley cyrus and all those other clowns couldn't light a candle next to singers like Luke Kelly who is a one off in my book.

  • @creamius88 As an American I have to agree with you, but remember a lot of Americans don't like how our standarized, big business entertainment industry is destroying traditional, regional, folk, and ethnic traditions and customs in the United States also. Please don't assume that this cookie-cutter popular crap is real American culture.

  • @rmm413c ...i agree with you about music having a traditional and historical value, and you are correct about the cookie cutter crap as you so eloquently put it not being american culture, i am curiuos to know where you are from in the states and how you came across luke kelly, i think luke kelly's genius lies in his ability to adress irish issues in his songs as well as universal themes, his voice encapsulates his great humanity, his values perfectly

  • @creamius88 Now I'm in Florida, where things are getting too standardized. I'm originally from Virginia (western mountainous part), where a richer regional traditional culture still survives. Appalachian "old-timey" (folk) music has a lot in common with traditional Irish music. Watch the YouTube clips "Clancy Brothers,Tommy Makem-Bringing it all Back Home" for examples. I found Luke when I saw a Dubliners album in a bargain bin, didn't know who they were, but thought I'd give 'em a try. Lucky me

  • @rmm413c the problem with america is that big corporations dictate everything spanning from government to music, i think a lot of the prominent "american artists" send out the wrong message to young people in as much as they are extremely individualistic, self aggrandizing etc. What im trying to say is that we shouldn't underestimate the ability of music to influence young people in how they form values and their philosophy as a whole...take rap music in america for eg, its a huge hot potato

  • @rmm413c Amen! Please check out Billy Joe Shaver & the Carolina Chocolate Drops before you jump to conclusions, folks! There's lots of mindlessly consumed worthless bland matter here. But REAL American Culture is a beautiful thing often looked down on by mainstream America in its contempt for the intrinsically American. Our greatest artists often are more appreciated in Europe than here. The mainstream's delusional Disney worldview demands all to be prettied & cleaned up & that kills the art!

  • Thank you so much for posting this beautiful song, it has genuine significance for me as my father loved it and it was played at his funeral.

Thank God for Luke Kelly too.

  • can ye english not feck off and appreciate some of yer own native singers...like westlife perhaps or boyszone.....

Do na ndaoine atá Gaeilge acu agus ag leamh an pósta sin....

Bí siúriulta go bhfuil mé ag magadh!!!!

  • If Luke wanted to be appreciated by only the Irish, he would not have went on tour ALL OVER THE WORLD, and it wasn't just Irish songs luke sang. and whats more if it wasn't for "an English person" you would not have half of luke's songs/vids up to begin with, ya fool!

  • Yes, Luke was an honorary Brummie for a year, often at the 'Jug of Punch' folk club. We were privileged to hear that voice.

  • @kellyoneill its ok he says in irish hes only jokin

  • @kellyoneill

Your scouse tho you're not English :P

  • @kellyoneill take it easy. Yer man says in irish that he's only joking. he knows that luke is for everyone.

  • @Frankieireland I dont speak Gaelic so I didnt know that :)

  • @kellyoneill when he says westlife and boyzone ya shoulda known he was taken the piss

  • @kellyoneill you are soooo right... Lukes singing brings a bit of the Irish freedom to all of us.

  • @ballymalu cad a bhuil tu ag caint faoi ta boyzone agus westlife eirinach!

agus ta an amhrain seo on bhreatain beag.=]

  • @ballymalu No need to be nasty.

  • @ballymalu You don't seem to realise that this is an English folk song from Lancashire. EPIC FAIL.

  • @ballymalu.. ta an ceart agat!

  • @ballymalu haha

  • @ballymalu we should be ashamed that we inflicted Boyzone and Westlife on the English. It was only 800 years, they hardly deserved that.

  • @zozimus One of the funniest things I've ever read on youtube. Three cheers for Luke.

  • @ballymalu lol ban mé a lán taitneamh as an pósta sin :)

  • @ballymalu time you fuck of you rascist twat, ra ra ra fuck off back into your time machine and absorb the twenty first century with your peanut brain !!

  • go fuck off ya english scumbag

go destroy a country again oh wait middle east yeah.

    fuckin scum

  • Boy George is actually Irish...George O'Dowd.

  • welsh or english??? haha nah man sorry.... ye can have yer boy george and robbie williams and well hold onto our luke kelly thanks!!

  • class

  • he captures what exactually it is to be irish.......

  • what dictionary did you get the word exactually from?

  • @kellyoneill Don't you know the word "exactually" coming from Old French "eixèctuèlie" meaning "blue", or "tied with a white tie made of brown chocolate"?

  • @kellyoneill that's funny!!

  • @kellyoneill haha

  • @kellyoneill Fair play for posting it anyway lad

  • @kellyoneill he has proper irish where ya dont say ''rothar'' u say ''bhicycle''. U wont find that in any dictionary

  • @ballymalu exactually ftw lol

  • @ballymalu This isn't an Irish song, it's an English folk song from Lancashire - the reference to 'mines' should be a dead give away; Ireland is hardly renowned for its mines compared to the north of England.

  • @ballymalu westlife and boyzone are irish u dick!!

  • dam you luke, you set the bar to high for us mere mortals.

  • luke is a legend !!

  • always sad i will never get to see this genius live in concert.

  • Another brilliant song from Luke. Ní bheidh a leithead arís ann.

  • nacho 1560 listen to luke kelly sing parcel of rogues great scots song dont know who wrote it though

  • Parcel o Rogues was written by Rabbie Burns, 18th Century Scots poet and genius.

  • hi

Is that a regular harmonica that ciaran is playing?

  • luke was great fullstop! we wont get the likes of him again.

  • This is also a social history song, from the day's when youngsters just out of school, hardly any experience of life were pushed down into the mines.

  • My grandfather worked in a coal mine at only 12 years old, in cenrtal Pennsylvania, poor thing. God bless him and others who have to do those kinds of jobs.

  • Love to hear people from outside Ireland appreciating his music. Love blasting him out after a few jars, magic.

  • gar, from Scotland, but his voice is so beautiful. ffs, we're Celtic so wtf. All from the same ancient race. Original Scots Celtic race came from Ireland, mixed with our Pictish women and hey presto, produced Scotland. lol!

  • Go Brea! Greetings from Éire!

  • i love it

    i love the kelly!

  • A true Irish song, from the greatest singer of all time, love it 5 stars,

  • it's ewan maccoll's tune, a scot. great nonetheless

  • @magsbyrne9 Errrr, it's not an Irish song, it's an ENGLISH folk song from Lancashire.

  • Great song. Great lyrics.

  • brings a tear to my eye everytime i hear the mans voice.legend

  • Brings a tear to my eye everytime I hear it too.A good friend of mine Eddie was the first person I heard singing that song about 20 years ago and he had some voice.Sadly Eddie like Luke is no longer with us.

  • Brilliant!!

  • what a song what a man only one word can describe him legend

  • I can,t get enough of this great mans music.

  • Have lost track of this song for years, and I'm very happy I've found it again. The most tender song I know of. Fantastic..

  • i love this song, it always makes me think of my dad, who is the oldest son of 10 kids. When my granda became ill, it was my father who left school early to go out and work to help the family. So many of his generation were like that, they are to be respected for sacrificing part of their childhoods for the sake of their families. Luke Kelly captures the mood of the lyric perfectly.

  • luke kelly = legend

  • youv'e done great job on youtube kelly with all the great music from the legend himself.tomorrow marks the 24th year the world became a sadder place with lukes passing.only christy has come anywhere near to lacing his shoes since then
