@Knightgil dude Kurt was going to kill himself a number of times and said he choose drugs at the last minute instead of killing himself, no doubt that he got addicted, but if anything drugs prolonged his life. you said he 'tried' to overdose before, that is because he WANTED to die, not because he loved drugs so much that couldn't have enough without being to the point of dying. He was using drugs to blot out the pain he had that made him want to die in the first place.
