The Mic is not the problem as it is just a passive device. Sly's Mic was distorting ("Clipping") because the recording console level for his voice was set to high ("Hot"). Recorded Music now uses Compression to automatically limit clipping and squash the loud and quiet parts together. This is easier to do but makes songs sound bland and one dimensional compared to most older recordings.

this one performance shows evidence of his raw talent, musicianship and singing, his song writing abilities, him being basically made of soul, and that he can have fun with it while hes doing this, he can write a beautiful song and still have a laugh performing it, legend, i'd give anything to see him live, even now
Aint nobody Funk like Sly, man you gotta' love the funk genre man. Every one of the greats are such a marvel and great in their own right,James, Sly, George, Bootsy, Prince. Its unbelievable what people are calling funk these days.
He was doing what he loved to do. You can see it! Sweet smile and laugh.....such an endearing honesty. Everybody is a Star was a watershed moment in my life....you gotta remember that one!!!!!
Big Daddy got it right..this guy was the real deal. Only others that stack with Sly...Stevie Wonder and Bob Marley (although not funk-oriented, Bob had soul!).
And you can thank the grand daddy of them all, most great funk vocalist numero uno influence...Mr. Ray Charles!!! Soul.
Get some real mics for the playa..Mike Douglas knew how rare and great it was to have a sober Sly show up and I respect the man for understanding what he had here....Mike douglas was a cool old white cat.Dick Cavett could eat a dck
Aaahhh "lll be so good ..... i wish i could ....... get this message over to you .... Now! Awesome in every way! Yes it's true, the miks can't handle his vocal range. And yes it's true again, this is in the top 100 best youtube videos. One more comment, he's got to be the cutest damn thing. Sorry if I make the men shrug ..... but it's so true.
you are right!! some times his voice gets so loud on this vid. the mike cant take it now thats what i call pipes! This is better than any American idol to me :D
God! I LOVE this! His vocals are so rich, authentic, soulful and he's got so much range. It comes from within and he just brings it out. His talents are truly a gift. And he is the cutest damn thing. I absolutely love this. Whenever I'm in a bad mood this is often the cure. It makes me so happy just
Thank you so much for posting this! The other version on here is from a documentary with several audio glitches and I've been hoping to find a clean, uninterrupted one. This music will live forever.

as for Cavett vs. Douglas, Mike wasn't tryin' to be cerebral (he was outa Philly, right?) "you takin' care of your bread?"
