We had one on our 03 level starboard side USS Merrill DD-976 back in 1981. First Spruance class destroyer to get this and the Tomahawk test platform (port side forward 5" gun). She's a beauty and rips the shit out of anything enemy-wise. Still have shell casing as a keepsake.
@bman6565 not true dude, my ship had 4 of them, port and starboard stern one near the island and one port side forward. One can't protect the whole ship, especially as big as an aircraft carrier.
bman6565: You're not only terrible at grammar and spelling, but what you say is wrong...completely stupid and wrong. There are multiple Seawiz (sp?) on ships, mainly posted forward stbd and port, as well as port, stbd on the fantail. Yet another idiotic youtube poster.
Could you explain to me how the weapon can rotate 360 degrees to address all threat angles? It seems to be a flawed system unless that can be done. I remember when we test fired the 5" guns and the door to our shop flew open and some of the riviets on the bulkhead popped out. We were on the hangar deck about midships. I worked in the photo lab.
Thanks for the explanation. That makes sense. We didn't have these when I was in. We had 5"38 which also had limited turning. I was on a damage control team on the forward port gun tub of a CVA when we were playing war games with the Marines out of El Toro. We had a "new" computer fire control system when the Marine Phantoms came on the scope. The 5" just shook back & forth. I could have hit the F-4 with my CO2 bottle when screamed by below the flight deck. He hit his AB & did a barrel roll.
@exenrontexas I does work, I've seen it in action. It's the last line of defense. I don't think they even use these anymore, now they have a short range missle system. I worked in the photlab too, PH2, aboard USS Enterprise and USS independence back in the early/mid 80's.
USN still uses them they just upgraded for more capabilities.

@gtc1961 Perhaps that is what the DDs are for and the ready aircraft. We had F-8s, a truly marvelous aircraft that saw very long service.

Well you'd be dead wrong about that. This one is up near the bridge, the SECOND one is on the stern.

When I was on carriers they used to make us hide in the workshop when they tested the CIWS. We could still hear the noise though. Crazy.

I'm afraid I don't know much about this system. I was an avionics tech.

they have more than one per ship, if you put one on each corner of the ship, there's your 360 coverage.

Yup, and it's too bad we didn't get to test it out on Iran's little boats last month.
