It takes between 15 and 45 minutes to heat a tank depending on the fuel. The flue can get buildup of tar and needs to be scraped periodically. You know this because heating times will increase. I use a tin can lid nailed to a 1X1 to scrape the tar out. With the added insulation the water is hot enough for 2 or 3 showers over 2 days. In Florida it seldom gets below 32 F and the water entering the tank is 75 F. In colder locations heat time may be longer and hot water may not last as long.
Nice to see your stove in action. I'm kicking around some similar ideas and like the idea of putting old junk back to some purpose for my off-grid hunting cabin. Thanks for taking the time to film and post your project. You said you light a fire every one to two days. How long does it take for your water to heat and does it stay hot enough to bathe for a full day?
I said the wrong size on the water heater I should have said 30 gallons not 90 gallons but even the 30m gallon water heater's weight gets closer to 300 pounds than 200 pounds I say in the video.
The temp and pressure relief valve is under the outer jacket and is still functional.
As the commenter warns you should always have an operational relief valve.
I like your design. I used to live on a farm and my dad didn't want to spend money on electric to heat our water. He would get old tanks from where ever. We would lay the tank on its side on a frame that held it a couple feet off the ground and burn scrap wood and trash under it. We never had any insulation on it and a tank would only last a year or two before the flames wore a hole in the steel tank. We had to schedule shower time because the tank would get cold not long after the fire died.
I found simular results with my 40 gal gas hot water heater heated with wood. Thanks to you I set my water heater up for household use. I've been using it for about 3 weeks now and we couldnt be more pleased with the hot water output.
where is the temparture and pressure relief valve , wow if that thing gets too hot it will blow up like a bomb , no pressure relief valve ,, pretty stupid .
hi dude got an idea in my little head could work a treat but then i am a dreamer along with an idea to take power from rivers and lots of other stuff which makes me a complete loser when i die they will write on my grave .....................nothing cos i never make it just dream it !
@acefreaky dreaming is where it starts!! if you aren't able to make them yourself, friend someone who can help, then your tombstone message might change for the better.
A large rocket stove would be perfect for this application.

StillPE, you should look into making a rocket mass water heater, it burns hot enough to ignite the CO2 and expels very little smoke.

ROTFL @ 1:00 "it's not the most elegant design"

Fun stuff.

Nice.
It's basically a rocket stove based water heater.
There are many similar designs out there.
Well done.

I made one of these simular to this one and it works great. I just wish I could use it inside the house so I could more easily tend the fire.
