Now gee let me think, now what has the federal government done in the past that has been totally successful? Well the most successful thing would have to be the Social Security System. If the Feds would have left it alone we would have a surplus today. But that's not the case, Social Security is safe today but will run deficits in just 12 years.. However what we now have, as recently quoted by Senator Orrin Hatch, Medicare on the edge of bankruptcy with $38 trillion in future costs.

A new car with a payment between $300 to $600, full coverage insurance (just as much) and pay for gas, AND rent/bills/food/clothing.

Whereas a few simple mods or just plain MAINTENANCE can improve your old cars fuel mileage. Besides who will pay for the remaining $20,000+ the tax rebate didn't pay should a person get laid off? The recession hasn't stopped, its still going on.

Not all will fail, this applies to the ones who thoughtlessly jumped on this without thinking.

We got a 1986 mercedes benz 300E to sell that gets 18 MPG combined!!!!! The dealer says its only worth about $1500.

Our first new car in 10 years. We got a 2000 Caravan with 101K and the transmission is on its last leg. Its starting to clunk when u got into 2nd gear.

We are getting either a Toyota Sienna or a Chrysler town and Country. but the T&C is a POS. The Sienna is a very nice minivan inside

The 3.8L V6 doesn't get good enough mileage for the program.

To get the 4.0L V6, you need to pay atleast $34,000.

We don't wanna pay more then $30,000 and Sienna gives u a strong base 3.5L that makes 266 hp

but what if your car doesnt get the gas milage its "suppose to" i have an s-10 chevy pick up 1994 and it supposably gets like 25 mpg but it doesnt because my brother crashed it and it now gets 15 and a half mpg. it still works and still use it every day.... does it stil qualify??

Watch. The EPA estimates on some of these old cars will mysteriously go up a bit and new car estimates will drop. Then, the gov't won't have to pay as much but they will still have a feel good program running. I am thoroughly convinced this is not such a great idea. It seems too good to be true.

The average is base on engine size. My chevy is the same way. The 350 standard engine may get 15 but the big block which may not be listed only gets 8

I see your point. I have a sport utility that has over 200,000 miles on it but it is still reliability and can't afford a new car right now. But there are those u want not need a new car. It is nice to have that freedom to do that but it is up to u to make that choice. The governments own web sites have differnet wording. The legislation says Consumer Assistanst to Recycle and Save, the CARS website says Car Allowance Rebate System, and other stuff says Cash... Leave it to the government to come up with a totally confusing program. At least KBB explains well. Thanks KBB!
