There was speculation that The Vinick character was based on John McCain - a "maverick" Republican who didn't always fall in with party ideology. But the show's producers said that while the Santos-Obama similarities were deliberate, the resemblance between Vinick and McCain was purely coincidental. They wanted a Republican candidate that had broad crossover appeal, unlike the cartoon character that Bartlet ran against 4 years eariler.
@angiecarranza josh would be a terrible president, he's too neurotic. don't get me wrong, i love him and all, but i would not vote for him for president, he's much more of a behind-the-scenes guy...
@angiecarranza Before Rob left, there was an episode where Bartlet told him "You'll be president one day." That's "The Next Generation" series I want to see. :)
@thexfactor56 It's not just a rumor. Elli Atta, a West Wing producer (and former Gore speechwriter) says that is exactly what happened. Obama's speech was in August 2004 and the Santos character was introduced in an episode around November 2004. Atta said he had close ties with David Axelrod and asked Axelrod about Obama, who Axelrod was consulting for at the time (and now is Obama's senior advisor).
While I agree, I think that was a part of the point... They were the "new school" trained by those old school leaders and primed to usher the country into the "next era of leadership"...
a lot of people stopped watching when Sorkin quit. I just have to say that I was a bit dissapointed in seasons 5 & 6, but that last season was really really good.
how are u watching it ? the internet or the dvd or TV? if the internet, can u tell me where i can watch all the seasons of " The West Wing "...........
@krystleab I think you're being a little harsh on season 6. Season 5 was definitely a sort of holding pattern season, with a few individual highs but lacking an overall thread and direction. I like 6 and 7 a lot. They lacked some of the wit from 1-4 but had the same substance I thought. For the overall storyline, 7 is easily up there with the early seasons. Alan Alda as Vinick was genius casting. 7 is the only season that gives you a good Repulican/Democrat match up.
We all knew this show would never be the same without Aaron but now that the show been gone for a year, everyone is missing it instead of complaining about it. I too, miss the show very much.
they say mr president and first lady, and i think jed & abbey, THERE CAN BE NO OTHER PRESIDENT AND FIRST LADY :(

Can I just say how awesome it would be for Josh to be Pres with Sam his CoS? Let's not forget Donna as a kickass First Lady.
OMG, WHY IS THIS NOT BEING WRITTEN?

You can....if you beleive the rumors...Pres. Santos is based off of now-President Obama and Obama's 2004 speech at the DNC
