  • I hope Paul McCartney didn't stay up all night writing that acceptance speech. And God bless John Wayne!

  • dam, that was quick..I guest he had a Gig to go too.god bless paul.

  • Classic clip! 2 greats!Duke&Paul!:)

  • Nice speech Paul. Couldn't say anything?

  • I think Wayne was happy about the Beatles getting the award, even though it signaled a new wave he could never join. Nice job. You could tell that this gathering of the Establishment was not McCartney's crowd, everybody stiff and formal, which was probably why he just hung out in the back. He was even more of an alien based on the cultural gap than the fact that he was British. Interesting juxtaposition, interesting choices, a real changing of the guard moment in pop history.

  • Brevity is the highest form of wit. Paul explained that with his acceptance speech. Cool. Peace brothers. Bear.

  • On reflection I'm sure Paul regretted attending this, but then 1970 must have been a pretty brain mashing experience for all 4.

  • It looks like Paul didn't expect to win that night judging from his attire and footwear - and his speech ! But what a great track !

  • LOL gardener.

  • Many of you don't understand what was happening at the time, but those of us who were there understand.

Take a look at the Grammy Award for "Album of the Year" between 1964 and 1970 and you will see that the Old WW2 generation who hated The Beatles and everyone with long hair virtually ignored The Beatles' albums except for Sgt. Pepper. Look at the artists who won instead. Nice albums but not Album of the Year.

Most of us realized that the Grammys were a joke and we didn't blame you Paul.

    .

  • Why is Ringo left out??

  • @schimmelpenninq Only because he didn't write any of the songs included on the soundtrack album. (no song credits by Ringo)

  • Talk about being under dressed. Paul just looked ridiculous and acted even worse.

  • ,,,I think that's John Cusack.

  • McCartney's a hack--comes to my White House and insults my President and the current loser, clown occupying my White House permits it to happen.

  • @dlgallagher11 McCartney was gracious during his acceptance of the Gershwin Prize, and supportive of the United States as a country. He didn't slight any former president which is what I think you are implying; he made a comment about how far he felt the world had come since he wrote Blackbird which he has stated was meant to be supportive of the Civil rights movement in the USA during the 60's. How is that in insult?

  • @wmg1958

Go to the YouTube link of McCartney insulting Pres. Bush at the WH. Take a gander at what your hero said about former Pres. Bush at my White House. That entitled has been bum has no right to come into my country, take some award I pay for with my tax $ and insult my Pres. Politics aside the current character inhabiting my WH should have had the class to reprimand him, but he didn't. He's of the same ilk. BTW, stop venerating pop stars. I'm sure you can find more worthwhile role models

  • @dlgallagher11 OK, I see what you mean..."...it's great to have a president who knows what a library is." This was AFTER the event ended during press questions. George Bush's wife Laura was a librarian when they met, so I think Bush would have laughed it off and sent a zinger back Paul's way. British humor can be cheeky, as brits might say; remember Lennon's "Rattle yer jewelry" comment. Texans and Queen Mums don't sweat that stuff. And thanks for making a case and not just throwing an insult.

  • @wmg1958 stop being an apologist for McC. and respond to his behavior objectively. McC is an ignorant slob.Don't rationalize;it's a pathetic defense & don't feather your rationalization for McC. ignorance by saying "Pres.& Mrs. Bush would have laughed it off and sent a zinger back Paul's way". No they didn't. They have too much class to dignify him. Would you or your spouse laugh off such an ignorant comment? I'm sure McC. would just laugh off my comments if I said them at Buckingham Palace.

  • @dlgallagher11 . While I appreciate your rational, I still think it was a bit of British humor and shouldn't be taken too seriously. It is so similar to the Lennon comment, including the quick turn-away that its hard not to think that its not regional humor in execution and approach. You are right, I cannot assume, but I would like to think Bush would parry humor with humor but if not, then perhaps with this actual Bush quote: "...this happens and it's a sign of a free society"

  • @wmg1958Again not interested in your apologetics for a has-been pop star. McC was NOT joking. There is no apologizing / rationalizing his behavior on any level (or anyone’s) who behaves as childish & ignorant as he did. I imagine you’re a Brit since you continue to excuse him. If Trace Adkins insults the Queen in her Palace that is just joking, right? If you’re not a Brit your attitude toward this represents what is wrong with America’s sense of national pride, and overall perspective.

  • @dlgallagher11 Look up Tom Jones and John Lennon: it was a joke, "Taking the mick" as Jones put it. But I admire your manners. Thanks for taking the high road yourself. I'll give you the last word if you care to take it. I'm an American, by the way, I love my country and I would be more worried if people were NOT allowed to make jokes about politics or presidents, good or bad, even at the White house. So long, dlgallagher11.

  • @wmg1958You’ve been making straw man arguments all along. This isn’t a 1st amendment debate. It is not a debate about what “can” be said; it’s a debate about what ‘should not’ be said. It’s a debate about virtues such as honor, class, decency and respect, and by your excusing, apologetics, rationalizations and straw man retorts you represent a large faction of those who have no regard for those virtues in our society today. And all in the name of a Beatle. How sad.

  • the most scripted cow shit I've ever laid my eyes upon.

  • @paddyjotierney At least they are having fun and not taking it too seriously. Anyway, this was how it was done back then. If that had been Bob Hope with John Wayne, it probably would have had a little more rhythm and timing.

  • Love this. Linda grabs a souvenir at the end.

  • Typical Paul in the early '70's...."lets just sweep all this Beatle nonsense under the rug wot wot".

  • And to all you single guys complaining about Linda's being there, plainly you've never been in love.

  • And all Paul can say--maybe all he dares to say in the Duke's presence --is thank you.

  • What about ringo lol

  • ...3.06..

  • Brian Ferry at 3.06

  • Mc Cartney and John Wayne on the same stage.Wow,never thought I'd see that

  • I think it's cool that he didn't speak. Shows that hes not interested in boosting his ego by talking about himself and how it wouldn't have been possible without god.

  • He should have come on barefoot.

  • Andy Williams is a great host and a gifted singer in his own right. Wayne is funny as a presenter and Paul is one of the greatest songwriters of the twentieth century, not to mention the Beatles cultural impact. Great to see this.

  • Apart from Starsky and Hutch American TV sucks ....

  • well done paul, i wish i could go back in history

  • speech sucked

    shows he has no talent

  • @matchbox555 You are nuts, it just goes to show that he parked his ego outside.

  • the top comments were actually funny

  • whenever i hear john wayne speak i just hear ryan stiles

  • @Dawoshoy you're an idiot Mr Wayne won the best actor oscar the year before for the original True Grit. @TFJEA you insenitive prick Paul had every right to invite Linda up on stage with him if he wanted to he loved her more than anything in this world

  • wait-Ringo-where's Ringo on that note?

  • it was a short speech cause the beatles were separated at that moment

  • and Ringo Starr!! what about him why he didnt get a grammy too!!

  • @JorgeGeog , It was for songwriting. Ringo didn't write any of the music for "Let It Be."

  • "If you're doing a love scene, what do you hear?"

    "APPLAUSE."

    HEH hehe heh heh !!

  • I think he should have gone up there ALONE. Linda, although his wife, had nothing to do up there. She was doing a Yoko number. And WHO chose his clothes?

  • @tfjea Umm..I THINK you are overlooking something important here ; McCartney WANTED his wife with him because he loved her and was proud of her

  • disapointing speech paul (

  • That brass cover of Let It Be scared the shit outta me.

  • The duke was a little out of place....like seeing a Nun at a comedy club.

  • apparently, Duke DID wear lifts at the time. He was 6'4" at his peak but by 1970 he had lost a little, maybe an inch and a half? so he wore lifts so he probably was 6'6" here, which is why he towers over everyone, Macca's 5'11" but looks a shorty next to him!

  • pinche paul mierda de culo, vete a la verga perro traidor. siempre quisiste ser john lennon hijo de putaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa por tu perra culpa se separaron

  • nazis dont like lil wayne

  • Right erm...

  • @aarfeld no he didn't win an oscar for Live And Let Die the song The Way We Were won that year do your research before you look like an idiot. this wasn't the first time John Wayne had been apresenter at an award show he presented Joanne Woodward her best actress oscar in 1958

  • Duke Ellington is among the cowd

  • I thought he was never gonna shut up!

  • What a talentless hack Marion was.

  • @Pizuzuzimmer fuck off The duke was great!

  • Paul was too flip and aloof. He obviously didn't take it very seriously. That's fine if that is the way you feel. However to dress, act and speak they way he did is to disrespect all the people who spent a lot of time & effort to show appreciation to him for his work.

But how much can you expect from a man who can't walk to a podium without bringing his wife, Linda 'I'M A MUSICIAN TOO!' McCartney

  • @jatroup12 The 1970 Grammys was in March. Macca released his first dolo album in April 1970 then announced his split from the Beatles a few days later. The other Beatles didn't acknowledge the split unil December 1970 when Paul sued to dissolve the Beatles. So, when I always see this clip I think Paul didn't give a speech because the Beatles were already dead and none of the others even bothered to show up. He probably felt out of place as why the short "thank you" and exit.

  • @jatroup12

She was in his fucking band at the time, you cretin. And why should he take this horseshit award seriously? Means nothing.

  • Paul obviously thought before hand that he would play it cool, ended up looking daft.

He should of made the most of it, he will never get awards like that again.... Fact!

He hasn't go to much left to say say say................

  • @kemponeill: Although, he did win an Oscar three years later for his theme song for "Live and Let Die."

  • fair enough, but i still think he has a talent of such rare extent that he's allowed to be arrogant, i would be arrogant if i was the musician he is, i think it'd be hard not to be. lennon was even more arrogant but he was much better than mccartney and they both knew it.

  • Damn, this is a rare and fascinating clip. The Duke - American icon, and Paul McCartney - dope smoking counter-culture hippie who helped destroy America's youth. Great speech by him, BTW. As appreciative as the Beatles ever were of any awards, or their fans. Flippant, arrogant hippies.

  • @MisterMasterShafter1 some people are allowed to be flippant and arrogrant, mccartney is one of them.

  • @philipdarby5 Yeah, 'cause he's just super duper, huh?

  • @MisterMasterShafter1 if you'd once occupied all top 5 positions in the music charts, you would have the right to be as arrogant as you like.

  • @philipdarby5 You see, that's the difference. I wouldn't be arrogant and flippant, I'd treat my freaking fans with class, like most performers actually do. Leastwise most from his day. Because the FANS are the reason he had five top anything! The Beatles' fans were/are just suckers to them. Good enough to buy their records and make them rich, but since then it's been, "get away, don't bother us, you little gits!"

  • @MisterMasterShafter1 Like most performers actually do?! Oh now there's a JOKE if I ever heard one! We the real fans know what they were going through at this time. Paul, John, George, and Ringo were/are all human beings with human emotions. There is a time for everything ya know. And do people forget that is was RINGO who was the first Beatle to walk out of the band?! We've never been in their position so how do we know how we'd deal with it emotionally?!

  • @MattHatter Okay, let me correct myself. Like most performers of The Beatles era did. Today's clowns, not so much.

  • John Wayne and Paul McCartney shaking hands. The Beatles and THE DUKE! THE VERY BEST!!!!!!!

    Sammy - Bay V

  • That was a great speech, Paul!

  • Hey, it's Andy Williams!

  • It was okay, but Paul's speech was too long.

  • @ApocalypsePlough If the speech was too long better don't talk about the introduction...

  • @ApocalypsePlough you got that right...what a chatty Cathy... I thought he would never shut up!

  • ,,Paul was like, ok I'm here to get my goods as can be expected since I'm the best,,HaHaHa.

  • I love John's Voice..It Sceams America!

  • Poor Ringo...

  • Great speech paulie, it waS moving

    Lol

  • is that black people applauding a racist joke about a japanese gardener?

  • @innit27 yah, i caught that too, to quote Lou Reed, 'those were different times..."

  • Thank you bornin for posting this video! I had never seen this clip before and it was wonderful to see Paul with his love Linda making that brief acceptance speech...they were probably too outta breath to say much more! LOL! And although John Wayne probably would have been ostracized by today's "Politically Correct" thinkers, I thought the "Sands of Iwo Jima / gardener" joke was pretty good! :) Looks like it very well could be Bryan Ferry at 3:05! Cheers all! :)

  • just lookin at this video and i can see bryan ferry at 3.05 does anyone agree considering this is about 1970

  • thats what happens when you smoke a couple of doobies, you can`t remember your speech,

  • Is John Wayne tall or is everyone else a short arse????

  • @thefrecklepuny he wore lifts in his shoes even though he was 6'4"! haha but he was a giant teddy bear :)

  • HAHAHA those are bad seats! His speech time was up by the time he walked up there from the kitchen.

  • Could Paul have gotten worse seats?

  • basicly what john wayne was saying here ( @2:32 ) was you better stop with the wise cracks or im gonna crack you one in the mouth.....and then he flees do to john waynes pure AMERICAN wrath.

  • Why people say silly things against J Wayne? Why don't show more respect to people no matter what they think?

  • I wish all of the acceptance speeches were like that!

  • @zcxspam Interesting though that Paul didn't stick around in LA for the Oscars, which they also won for Let It Be.

  • for fuck sake paul, how could you go to the oscar's dressed like that!!!and why take your wife on the stage??whats with theses fucking beatles all glued to their wives like fucking babies to their mamas tit......

  • @onlyjoetee no shit, I agree completely.

  • @shredder1965 hahahaha so true, both lennon and McCartney lost their mothers as kids, perhaps that had something to do with their attitude towards their wives, clinging to them like babies..

  • @onlyjoetee good theory, you may be right.

  • @shredder1965 well it makes sense i think,it explains a lot..

  • Comment removed

  • @NonStopRocker ok..xx

  • That dork McCartney is wearing tennis shoes. Charming.

  • god this is rare

  • Wayne is drunk here.

  • You can tell from the crowd's reaction that they didn't realize that Paul was actually THERE until he walked past them all. This is a great clip for Beatles history.....

  • Take "the" away and you have a correct sentence.

  • @BlackenedForLife John Wayne is a legend. A great actor and a decent human being. Yes he had faults, but hey dont we all.

  • @brunobrowne This clown "BlackenedForLife"

is extremely jealous of John Wayne. He posts negative comments all over. I guess it makes him feel more significant in some way.

    LOL!!!!

  • I thought this clip was rather endearing to John Wayne: he must have really disagreed with everything Paul Mcartney and John Lennon stood for, but he was gentleman nevertheless.

  • This was 1971

  • That was short.

  • John Wayne!!! Yeah!!!
