  • Go Phillipe,

  • Why compare these groups, be thankful they were all around.....simply the best times :-))

  • They are not better than the o'jays the temptations or the fours tops

all of these groups are equally talented and some just have more number one hits than others

  • @1980Triumph - in 1973 I was 12 years old. African American musicians inspired me into my drumming career. Need I mention ALI who was not even Mowtown! Anyhow, I respect these African American men - and women - who have had a profound effect upon me... and I am white! Call me a white European mix. Thank you for posting this. Many good memories : )

  • What a great song

  • I love these live perfomances. no lip syncing over your own tracks. you can hear the real talent.

  • how beautifully they translated their gorgeous recorded vocals live... those men were truly amazing interpreters.

  • Spinners are bad but no one could compare to Levi of the Four Tops.

  • Ahhhhhh...... the good old days when live versions sounded as good or better than the recordings! No auto tune, no lip sync, no tracks - just pure talent!

  • God bless the Spinners for such wonderful music.

  • Bobby & Philippe are the best! I agree with you.. Nobody can beat The Spinners! The only group that stayed alive.. And nobody else!

  • ok ... I give in, I said I will never comment on a video but I need help. I have fallen for Bobby Smith. Where can I see more video of him? I have watched "I'll be around" and this one. He is amazing!! Sly can you set me up????

  • @smilintamara Bobby is awesome in 'Games people play" also Bobby and Henry are still playing with new members in the group. Type in 'The Spinners in Miami" Bobby is in his 70s now but still a great performer

  • classy song!

  • Bobbie Smith is a very underrated singer. Smooth voice, smooth moves. And Phillipe Wynne brought it home. Perfect combination

  • The spinners even could do it live damm they superbad ,cool put them in the hall of fame now peace.

  • Lordy! Love, love, love these guys.

  • I love live versions like this ... wonderful

  • The Spinners are just amazing. Between Bobby & Philippe's voices and Thom Bell's amazing sound that he created with them, it just boggles my mind that they never won a Grammy and were never inducted into the RRHF.

I say, since the band is still around and still with two original members, it's time for the Grammy's to do right by them and give them a Lifetime Achievement award or something.

    Make it happen!

  • I'm Sly of Sly Slick & Wicked from Cleveland Ohio..Nobody's Home, Sho Nuff , etc.. Do not confuse us with the confessing a feeling group who took our trademark.. We are now displayed in The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame..

    Peace

    John[Sly]

  • Lets make a correction here; contrary to what has been branded about the name of this group. They are called "SPINNERS" and The Spinners.

  • ClaSsIc

  • yO ..

  • Pure class

  • OMG. I am almost in tears listening to this. Man this was my group during my college days in Virginia. No one could touch the Spinners. Well I would say there were a lot of great groups in that era so I will not pick one over the other. Bless you for posting and for those 9 dislikes? I have no clue why.

  • need the girls from the original; sad when a harmony group fails on vox

  • I absolutely loved the Spinners. I was however disappointed to learn that when Phillipe died only 8 people showed up at his funeral, I hope that wasn't true because it would have been a tragic ending to a man who has given us so much. If anyone knows any details of why his former band mates didn't show up to pay respects then I would be most interested to know. When he split from the group there must have been alot of animosity. Thanks!

  • They should have been inducted into the Rock-N-Roll Hall of Fame today.....it's a shame!!!

  • They are amazing performers!

  • The groups of today are a dime a dozen and many wont be remembered 5 years from now, but the bands of the 70s dressed nice, were respectful and kept people focused on them with their smooth dance moves and soulful, meaningful words. They have left their mark and will be remembered forever.

Putting my earphones on, closing my eyes and going back to a more peaceful beautiful time; if only for a little while.

  • @dunndebbiedo There isnt any groups at all now,,,,,,,,With staying around power..No soul

  • Fantastic upload!

    Very much appreciated!

  • Oh to have these days back. Saw the Detroit Spinners as support to the Four Tops at the Hammersmith Odeon back in 1973 and they blew the mighty Motown band off stage. Phillip Whynne had a great soul voice and what a showman!

  • ILOVE IT !

    BEAUTIFUL !

    Thank you so much!

  • Amazing talent! Not like todays talentless Rap garbage!

  • 8 have never been in love x

  • dont say better than the temptations my man!!

  • Brings back beautiful childhood memories!

  • class

  • @SHGlover007 ..... ah Billy Preston, the Hammond B3 Maestro, the Prodigy, he was in his own universe on the Hammond. I'd put Gregg Allman of the ABB and Lonnie Jordan of War after Billy P. Hey, but this is world class here by Johnny Poindexter on Hammond...you know your stuff SHGlover007

  • @domm1999 you know I think in the last 15 years I've really started to appreciate the music from the 70's. I was born in 1970, so I always liked it but now I listen for something different...not sure what it is, but I definitely love it now! lol It's funny that you mention the Hammond B3, I had a photoshop training class and the guy that was the trainer said that his great uncle was the maker of the Hammond!!!!!!! It was totally random conversation too!!

  • If you go to our song on You Tube Stay My Love by Sly, Slick & Wicked , you'll hear them with the exception of Ryland Harris.. Ryland took Kenny Brown's place on when Kenny left The Belltelefunk [Dazz Band] and became bass player/ band leader for Gladys Knight & the Pips.

    Peace

    John [Sly] :-)

    Sly, Slick & Wicked

  • Also Joel Jackson on guitar left the Spinners to play with Marvin Gaye..

  • I played with Johnny in the marching band at John F. Kennedy High School in Cleveland.. Johnny played Tuba and I played Trumpet.

    Peace

    John [Sly]

  • Gotta love the Spinners. Very classy and great music.

Phillipe Wynne was a great singer....

  • If only the current generation of musicians could understand a true stage performance like this.... anybody can synch digital music software, few can execute effortless stage choreography like the Spinners, and only a musician can give a Hammond B3 divine audience inspiration like Johnny Poindexter here, or the late Billy Preston. Such talent still exists but there doesn't seem to be Producers finding them or an audience who demands they do so with their wallets.

  • @domm1999 I couldn't agree more! You know before the post below identified the organ player I did think it was Billy Preston! Now he could truely make on organ SING!!!! lol lol

  • Comment removed

  • @Musicmellow thanks for the Spinners backing musician info. I didn't know who it was before your ID, but Johnny Poindexter was scorching the Hammond B3/Leslie on this one, most OUTSTANDING! And of course the Spinners are ALWAYS outstanding, epic.

  • Also Ryland Harris on bass from Cleveland

  • On Organ was Johnny Poindexter, on Guitar was Joel Jackson on drums was Sim London, from Cleveland , Ohio they were from The Belltelefunk who became The Dazz Band. They played on our first single.. I've known all of them since we were teenagers. We went to John F. Kennedy High School.

    Peace

    John " Sly" Wilson

    Sly, Slick & Wicked

  • @Musicmellow Good lookin out on the info!!!!! Now I FINALLY know who's playing. This was a great live performance. The Dazz Band was 1 of my favorite groups in the 80's "Let It Whip"!!!!!!! They did a good performance of that song on Soul Train back in the day! lol

  • @Musicmellow Hi do you play isn a band? I was reading your post & you mentioned that they played on your 1st single!!!! I've been wanting to ask you, just been a bit busy. lol lol lol

  • @Musicmellow God bless you.

  • lol.. close enuff.

  • These are the day's when music meant something from the heart! today you don't see it as much nor does it ring as true as did with band's such as the "Spinner's"

    Great song.

  • I think Jann Wenner and Rolling Stone Magazine are now on notice that this original Rock and Roll Music is far greater than his little ole magazine will ever be. And, we're watching them carefully. We will not permit them to continue to deny these great artists induction in THEIR own Hall of Fame!

  • The Spinners are great.

They got the good old '70's FLAVA'

  • The great Detroit Spinners. One hit after another. And all brilliant songs.

  • it dont make no sense, and its ashame they are not inducted yet!!!!

  • this takes me back to the 70's even though I've never been there.

  • spinners > o'jays & temps, but tops? imo, no. but to be fair the better comparison of styles is with the temps and o'jays. the tops were more raw. it's a matter of taste. GREAT VID!!!!

  • Bobbie Smith....singing The Spinners and Chicago are two of the greatest acts to come from the 60's 70's era of music, both have been ignored by Jann and his Hall.

  • Organ is tight!!!! Wish someone knew who was playing it that night. It really added something special to this performance!!

  • @SHGlover007 i disagree. after listening to this, its the bass that really made it.

  • @streetender1878 Bass is good, but that organ did it for me, especially around the 2:30 point

  • 1972 was a major year for Thom Bell. He produced the debut album by the Stylistics, considered by many to be one of the greatest sweet Soul albums of all time, and, contributed such classics as "Betcha By Golly Wow" He also provided production and arrangement work on the O'Jays' Backstabbers album and completed one of HIS greatest works, the Spinners' (which included "I'll Be Around," "Could It Be I'm Falling In Love" and "Ghetto Child,), In the view of many, the decade's greatest album

  • i was at home watching this on tv and my daddy caught me and had the belt in his hand but when i started singing he was alright he was clapping his hands and cheering me on. he made me such an happy boy and when my grand mother died he had me to sing at her funeral and everybody was in love with my voice. thanks to my ol' man for believing in me and not beating me that night in 1973. my kids sing to me and i still sing for my daddy, and when i went to beat my son ass he stop me and said no lmao

  • Thanks for voting for The Spinners...the word is getting out. I think they have a good chance of getting into the Hall of Fame this year.

  • wow love this shit

  • Man I feel GOOD after watching this one.

  • The Best of the '70s ...........................

  • THE SPINNERS ARE THE 70s!I seen there story on UNSUNG!!

  • Today The Spinners were nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2012. All those who want them in, go to Rockhall.com and vote on the online poll. Vote early and often for them! This poll doesn't mean much, but it will show the Rockhall the Spinners fans are supportive and want them inducted now.

  • @MsMissile01 DONE...thanks for the heads up!

  • @MsMissile01 Great!! I just voted.

  • @MsMissile01 Just voted, it is a shame it took almost 40 years for The Spinners to be nominated in RRHOF.

  • Why are The Spinners not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (RRHOF)? The Chairman of the "non-profit" RRHOF Foundation is the co-founder of the "for profit" Rolling Stone Magazine and he 'favors' punksters and hip-hoppers. Yes, it's a conflict of interest, but he's first among equals. And, some are more equal than others! Hopefully, The Spinners will be admitted with the Class of 2012. That's our plan, anyway.

  • More Importantly, Ya'll See Stan Lathan (Directed This And Sanaa Lathan Dad), Once again. wow. And Anna Horsford (Dee From The Wayans And Thelma From Amen) As Co-ProDucer! They Both Got That Long Money. lol. Great Song as well.

  • I have always loved this type of music. I grew up with old, as in black and white movies, and REAL CLASSIC music. Everything from Mozart and Beethoven to Soul to oldies... I wouldn't trade that for anything else. 90% of what is out there isn't worth the sound waves that carry it.

  • I am glad to say that I am a very luck fourteen year old for having met them and seen them in concert this year. They were all so cool!!!

  • everyone I hacked into my boyfriends account.... and I want to apologize for all the racist crap he said... Please don't take it personally... and please forgive the words he says...

  • @GroizerRobo The music industry has become BUSINESS instead of entertainment and talent. If someone can sing a note halfway right and is marketable, which means that their looks and body is great, someone will have a record deal waiting for them. Very little talent in today's music. I guess that is why I listen to great music like this.

  • @MrNathan791[sniffles sarcastically] I'll try to recover from your insult.

  • @laisseoublier if you have to show your ignorance and hate FOOL,then why don't you take your punk butt somewhere else. you're a loser just like all low life racist are.

  • I thought someone else other than phillip wynn was lead on this song. could anyone tell me is this bobby smith on lead here? this is a classic.

  • This is the kind of music that GROWN FOLKS partied to back in the days.

  • good, very good!

  • I'll take Levi and the Tops!!

  • Love this song pure harmony! Pure soul! Thanks for posting video.

  • All y'all older folks talking about soul music has died need to do a little more digging. True the gems are not in the abundance they once were, but there are some great artists putting put great music. I suggest y'all peep Jill Scott, music soulchild, Angie stone, dwele,

  • Best Lyrics: walked around with my heart in my hand, i use to sing fafafafafaf right now feel so good i sing lalalalalal....

  • la grande classe

  • What a great band that din't get the respect that the Temptations and the Four Tops got. One of my favorite groups ever.

  • @lilbootch Yeah they did, just took another decade for the rest of America to catch-on.

  • Sophisticated soul. Boy, I miss the days of of class, style and maturity in soul music and music in general. At least there were some male singers who acted like respectable men and sang about love and emotion and not just what woman they would screw and abuse next.

  • my man phillipe wynne

  • Definately better than The Four Tops, Not sure if they are better than the Tempations or the O Jays. Glad I dont have to choose. I love these guys.

  • Ladies and Gentlemen, Behold: the greatest of all musical genres, SOUL!

  • Take me back to the 70's!!!!

  • This is takin' it to church!! If you don't know the term!!!

  • love it!

  • I was a young teenager back in the day....didn't appreciate this kind of good music back then, but now as I get older this is all I listen to now.

  • Why in the hell is this not in rock and roll hall of fame? They deserve to be inducted.

  • could watch over and over!!!

  • @102541pss this is the first video I see after I sign in.

  • back in the day when soul music was sweet sounds of love, friendship and brotherhood.. no mentions of gats, hoes, bling or hurting anyone..

  • Damn the 70's had so many sweet soul sounds. The Spinners, The O'jays Harold Melvin, The Chi-Lites, early Hall & Oates. Where has all this great music gone???

  • Spinner are off da hook. whoever's playing that organ is on fire.

  • didn't those twin teachers @ aliquippa hi write this song. Melvin, my minds a blank.

  • Live Bands were present in most old school groups. NO more!! Raw Talent. The acoustics today can cover up what's not there. Nothing like old school classics. Love the spinners.

  • Oh my goodness, I am sitting in front of my computer jammin'!!.Go on and do the damn thing Spinners !!

  • Im 16 and my mom and grandma grew me up on this music glad they did.. Man that organ solo gets me everytime.

  • This is REAL music!

  • The days before autotune and computers destroyed music!!! These guys have more talent than any of these singers today who are so reliant on computer programs to make their voices sound better

  • I love this and they were singing live fantastic.....

  • What MsCharm05 said!!!

  • This is off the hook!!!!

  • All those hits they had, never won a grammy! That's a surprise, they should've at least won something!

  • @whouwit24 I agree. It's a travesty.

  • what happened to music these days?!?!

  • @dyermaker71 I am 22 year old Guy I agree i prefer the music from the late50s-early 80s... music has gone down hill

  • @prckay Same here, I'm 24 and I only listen to music from the 50s to the 80s, I can't listen to much music after that period, it's either ripped off of older music or just plain horrible...

  • Most underrated group of all time.

  • UH OH... THEY TOOK IT TO CHURCH ON THIS VERSION! :)

  • Why are these guys are not in the rocking roll hall of fame ?smdh

  • @bigshawn899 rockhall.com Vote now!!!

  • @bigshawn899 smdh ?? Suck my dick hater ???

  • love this waay better then BET

  • gadd, what a great group ... such creativity, subtlety, expressiveness, harmony ... Detroit was the capital of everything cool in America in the 1960's and 70's.

  • they were some handclappin jokers. hehaha

  • Great song from one of the great groups of our time,, song after song , im gonna get their greatest hits asap. I do miss those times

  • whoa saw this on unsung...wow

  • I love everything the Spinners sang. Hard to believe with their singing, and stage presentations they aren't in the rock and roll hall of fame. They crossed over on the charts with many of their hits. Love this group!!!

  • love this niceeee

  • I thought I was in church for a minute......there will never ever be any one who can ""sang" like Phillipe Wynne. I don't think there is anyone around these days who can?

  • @MzSouthernGirl I was thinking about this today. Out of people who are popular, I would think Robert Randolph is the only one who could pull it off.

  • @dskillzhtown maybe...he reminds me of Stevie Wonder.

  • @MzSouthernGirl There is a good reason for that! I play for a gospel quartet. I think the Spinners ,Temptations and Marvin Gaye, are the reason Black Gospel Quartet music is so nice!

  • just watched Unsung about the Spinners a few days ago,a great documentary about a great group

  • Outside of Eddie Kendricks and David Ruffin with the Temps, there was no better duo in a group than Bobby Smith and Philippe Wynne!! Perhaps my favorite group of all-time.

  • bobby looks like eddie griffin.

  • funky church groove.

  • The Spinners were taking the people to church with this performance!

  • Phillippe has one of the most unique voices I have ever heard! I have to listen to him every day! REAL MUSIC!

  • I DONT KNOW IF ITS FAIR TO SAY BETTER THAN THE OJAYS OR TEMPTATIONS, I THINK THEY ALL OCCUPY THE #1 SPOT, WE HAD SOME TALENTED BROTHERS & SISTERS BACK THEN. NOWADAYS, FAR & FEW IN BETWEEN. LETS LIFT ALL THE SOUL GROUPS UP!

  • NOTHING SEXIER THAN A BLACK MAN THAT CAN SING

  • @summerbabetoo You ain't lyin!!! And not just sing, but "SANG"! LOL!

  • @summerbabetoo You got that right.........

  • This joint is straight SOUL POWER!!!!

  • THESE ARE SOME REAL ARTIST WELL DONE HIT AFTER HIT LUV IT MAN THANKS FOR THE MUSIC. LUV THESE CATS. WHATEVER IT TOOK.

  • This is how a live performance should be, the band was amazing and everyone was feeling it. The Spinners are so amazing.....

What was the name of this show?

  • So raw! I love it!

  • They are getting down for real

  • if you cant feel that..your're dead and going to hell....

  • They sound good live.

  • @CoolbreezeChris86 you had to back then. Sadly anything goes these days.

  • This was shown on a public broadcasting station!!?? Wow, how lucky the viewers back then were. They should show these old programs now on PBS!!

  • Had more hits than any other group in their era, besides the Jackson 5. They sang the soundtrack of my childhood.

  • Bobbie Smith and Phippe Wynne sound so much alike. Sometimes it is hard to tell who is singing lead if you are not seeing them on perform. Philippe sounds a little different on songs but it can be hard to tell or is it just me?

  • Pervis Jackson looks like James Brown or like it could be his big brother

  • What's wrong with his perm???

  • @SomerKnight he sweatin it out...LOL!

  • I love the instrumental breaks in their songs.....this song and "One of a Kind Love Affair"

  • Bobby Smith was a really good looking man!!!! On the episode of Unsung they said the ladies LOVED him!!! I can surely see why!!!! lol
