There are so many songs that remind me of my Father & this one definently says it all....he was a WONDERFUL man!!! What a beautiful song, talk about a song that feeds your soul,,,,this one definently does it for me!!!
i've always loved his honesty.....he's said at live concerts that he's tuned his guitars down a half notch, like he did here [the road will wear you out] and he had such a connection with the audiences didnt he?
I was 13yrs old when I first heard this song. I had just started high school and would hear this song every morning on my way to class. I was lowly freshman who liked sappy songs. But this was so beautiful and comforted me in an increasingly bigger and harsh world. This song left an indelible mark upon my life as a teenager. I wouldn't change the time in which I grew up if I had to do it over again. This song made me feel...
I have only been to one concert. And that concert was Dan Fogelberg, back in 1981 in Memphis, Tn. It was so excellent that I don't need to go to another. God bless you Dan.
I miss you Dad. I wished we had found that Father , Son bond. I suppose it was more my fault than yours. Thank you for all that you did. And thank you for defending this great country. Our last hug was our best before you left for Iraq. I just wish Id known you'd never return. Semper Fi.
@gsxrbuckeye ......this made me cry. someday under God's Kingdom under Jesus' rule you will get to be reunited with your Dad...and there will be no more wars during that time.
@gsxrbuckeye Your father knew in his heart that you loved him..... sometimes words aren't needed..... And even now, don't you feel your fathers love for you? Love doesn't end just because the earthly body is stilled. Love transcends this mortal plane. Never doubt that your fathers service to our nation is deeply appreciated.
Dear gsxrbuckeye, I have no doubt that your Father knew what was always deep within your heart. So many times parents must stand back, as hard as it is, and let go and watch their children find their way but they never doubt the love that is hidden underneath it all. Each time you think of your Father, inhale the memories and know that his love for you lives forever inside of you.
@gsxrbuckeye I just learned the difference between a Silver Star and a Gold Star family. It's not just our military personnel who make the sacrifices - it's also the families of the soldiers (like yourself) who make dear sacrifices. I'm truly sorry for your loss and I'm thankful that our world was blessed with people like your father. Take care
I was 5 or 6 when this song hit the radio it is the first song I remember loving independently (meaning it was not on some kiddie album or part of my parents record collection) for some reason it made a huge impression on me then and it still does. Every time I hear it I am right back in the vinyl seat of that '79 Corolla speeding down the parkway w/ mom grinding the clutch, salem light in hand, passing dad's new building and trying to understand WTF.
I saw Dan several times after his 1991 tour. It's great to see him in his earlier days. He was a great star. Nothing I like better than walking the road near Inverness California and listening to Dan singing about love, family, and nature in my earphones. Thank you for posting this glimpse of Dan in 82.
i really love this song... everytime i hear it i cannot help but cry. i always remember my dad everytime i hear this. this song make me feel his still alive and still here to love and guide me.
it's my dedicated song for my dad....thanks to dan that he made it for every one...got teary eyed everytime i hear it....i really appreciate this song.
Reminds me of my Dad...who loves me fiercely..but is more about making sure you know from right from wrong than encouraging you or praising you...but you just know you are loved....God Bess you Dan..R.I.P.
I met him and his wife Jean, fleetingly, in 2003 backstage after his PBS Soundstage concert in Chicago. Surprisingly big man but engaging for those few minutes. I had the impression he was already not well.
Thanks for posting this great song.RIP Dan thanks for all the wonderful hours of happiness you have given me from listening to your music and playing it on my guitar.
Which hall of fame should this musical giant be in? The Country Hall of Fame, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, or the Folk Hall of Fame? This incredible music can't be so easily categorized, but Dan should be so honored. Listen to the simple overpowering beauty of this lyric. Not one word is wasted as a lifetime of love is so eloquently painted onto a five minute canvas. This song is how I feel about my Daddy, and it should go to all the good daddies out there.
pre10der - this whole Houston concert footage is awesome..and rare. I thank you immensely for posting it...of course you've spoiled us all...but pls don't hold anything back friend !!!!!!!!!
Wonder how many times he played this song? A classic for the ages! "Be back in 15 minutes and we'll rock and roll!!" Yeehaw! He died too young...died too young! Wonder if I will ever accept it?
Hey Buckeye...Wonderful words to a dad I know read them. Probably read them right in your heart. Major Ellis must surely be proud.

Actually i'm not sure if he uses the D-41 here. it's too vague. The D-41 DF Is dan's signature guitar. beautiful but expensive.
$3800 retail price. for more info check out the martin comp. website.

What a master he was! Master craftsman of words!
These kind of eloquent lyrics are rarely, rarely heard except in a small handful of artists.

I often felt playing music on the road left me somewhat of an absent, less than perfect parent.
When my son was grown he bought me this CD and told me this song was for me. I doubt he knows how much that means to me, to this day.

I'm a parent, teacher & a coach, one thing I've learned, it's "quality time" with your kids that's important . It seems your son felt the same way.
