Yeah I hate this. WMG don't seem to realise that being able to listen to music online is no different from radio. If people hear the songs more, they want to buy them. Whereas if you withhold them, they resent your entire company and download the music illegally.
Is bloody WMG everywhere trying to spoil the fun for everyone?. I have already bought the video and CD of this, and many other, St Etienne songs; what more do they want?
Do these fucking record companies really think that forcing youtube dissablig audio of our fav videos will be health their crappy sells?? i don't think so...
Yeah, most people would be looking at Sarah Cracknell but Deb is worth looking at to be different. Can't believe I typed those lines but it's a good song anyway.
It's funny but I thought the Bo Donaldson / Candlewick Green versions were completely naff. But this version was actually rather good and showed that it was a pretty decent R&B song. Nice Philadelphia strings.
Have the cd of this, have not played it in a while... but always wondered who the brunette is doing the backing vocals? Anyone know? Danny Jimenez aka Numanoid17
The backing singer is Debsy Wykes formerly of the Dolly Mixtures, and also a backing singer for Captain Sensible. There has just been a film made about the Dolly Mixtures called Take Three Girls look out for it.
I did run way modeling in the early 90s & Saint Etienne at some point was blasting in the back ground. I still play their music while siting on my patio Down town Denver or at parties & still get someone asking me who is that.
They produced a fantastic, unique sound. Miss the 90s big time, mostly because I was in my twenties, thinner and fookin fit! Now I'm nearly forty, not so thin and fookin unfit! I WANT MY YOUTH BACK!
36 meself - don't worry mate, I think we look better now. Distinguished. Plus I can afford a quite cool car. (not the petrol though.) And we can have a Twix whenever we like without having to ask. Get in!!
this is great - the original from the 70's by bo donaldson and the heywoods. and yeah, look, it's deb. huge crush. well at least in 1993. still a fan in 08.

The more I listen to Saint Etienne's 90's stuff, the more I realise just how fucking great they were. There aren't many artists of the era who meet this standard. Fan-fuckin-tastic!
Though I never had an affinity to this band, just watching this takes me back to that era where Britain really had its independance creatively, aesthetically this looks very British and not outdated
touringmars it was not completely wrong! ok, this song was written by the british jigsaw(the makers of "sky high") but also in the same epoch it existed a australian band called jigsaw like would say touringmars!
Saint Etienne were working with Kylie Minogue on her debut album with DeConstruction when this came out. I remember they wrote some album tracks for her 1994 release. Great group!.
Call me a loony, but I used to think that Kylie & Dannii Minogue should've covered this as a duet. I'm sure it would've been a big hit. Funny in the light of your comment!
The song is a cover by Candlewick Green, but also Bo Donaldson (i.e. Down in the Boondocks). I think Candlewick had the UK hit, and Bo had the US hit in the early 70's.
Debsy (sp ?) is the brunette who was also in Birdie. One of the most ethereral bands ever. St. Etienne never got the recognition they deserved in the US = way too good for mainstream. Thanks St. Etienne for making the world more beautiful.
This is a brilliant song I had long forgotten about. Should have been a bigger hit than it was. I remember taping this from the Chart Show on ITV but mistakenly taped over it!
One of the most soothing songs I can think of. Sadly underappreciated pop IMO, especially when compared to the Holly Valances, Sugababes and S Club 7-Rachels of recent years.
sorry you are wrong it was written by clive scott and des dyer of a band called jigsaw off there album ive seen the file ive read the book in 1974. then candlewick green released it but it got to number 3 in the usa.
Sorry, it's not a pickettywitch song the original was done by a band called Candlewick Green who appeared on the uk talent show opportunity knocks in the 70's.
One of my fav pop songs from 90s. Sarah Cracknell and Debsey vocals is fab and tune timeless. Passed this on to my four year old daughter who loves dancing to it.
