Just started studying woodblock printing in my History of Graphic Design class and I came across this video to get a better understanding of how it was done. This is an absolutely amazing art form! Thanks for sharing your video!
that is sooooo cool! I wish that I could learn to do something like that. It was interesting to see how everything came together and the colors didn't smear or bleed together.
wow! exactly what i was looking for and i didnt even expect you to explain how to create bokashi!! thank you!! and your japanese pronounciation is cute!!
Good job! Lovely painting! At first I was disappointed, thinking that the work was hard to make out, but then when the land was actually added I realized that it wasn't even half finished. Beautiful.

Hi, I'm doing an assignment for printmaking at Sydney College Of The Arts and I was wondering if you could kindly give me the spelling or names of some of the tools and processes you've used, please forgive my terrible spelling!
stunning! i am doing a dissertation on how the ukiyo-e prints of japan influenced western artists of the 19th century and needed to understand the process of these prints more so thank you very much.
The print came out wonderful. I'm a lithographer but I seriously need to go back to relief printing now. I love the subtle look of the Japanese water-based technique.
hey I'm doing some media work for college and i have searched the internet like mad and have not been able to find any advantages and disadvantages of relief printing i was wondering if you could help me or any one could?
Oh, you use the chisel to carve out whatever it is you don't want colored. For his demo, if he wants those roofs to be red, then he'd carve out everything except the roofs. Some chisels are real tiny that are great for little detail. When you're done carving you paint on the uncarved areas, plant the paper and press the hell out of it, lol!
It's time consuming, but it gets fun once you get the swing of it.
um... sory if this sounds like a stupid question, but can you get splinters from woodblock printing? I dont know much about it, and I need some disadvantages of using it for homework.
Yes, it's like the modern version of woodblock printing, its softer and easier to cut, however, I have yet to see any of the same quality as some Ukiyo-e I have seen.
beautiful work! i am currently writing a paper on the Ukiyo-e style of Japanese woodblock printing and this video has shed some amazing light on how its actually done. Cheers!
Cool. A couple NOOB questions tho. I'm assuming this method you do not need to carve out different plates for each colour. Does it take long for the paints/inks to dry before going onto another colour? Is there a specific order in which you apply the colours (ie: lights to darks). What is the best wood/material to use for a beginner?
At an art class we were learning about wood block prints and Mr.Pajak one of our teachers found this on youtube and I was interisted to find it and I found it!
Beautiful. Keeping a tradition alive like this is an act of sacrifice. It is therefore a hero's act to make the world a place where expression finds this old tradition and says something to us about the world around us, and links us to nature. Great video!
I am doing Japan as a topic for my Art GCSE and I've been looking at the different points of Japan and after reading the wikipedia for blockprinting I was rather confused on how the process was done but your video helped me out.
Hi Graham! It's great to see you on You Tube. You are truly a master. I will never forget how you transformed my straight chisel into a bull-nosed chisel, and all the other great block printing tips. Jean Womack
Excellent video on woodblock printing! It's nice to see a video of such professional quality dealing with relief printing.
Narration was both insightful & helpful. The process was paced perfectly not too slow not too fast. Being able to witness the entire printing process enables one to appreciate the time and dedication that printmakers give when making their creations.
Thank you kindly for sharing this video. Your contribution is greatly appreciated.

So, is wood block printing similar to linoleum printing in the sequence of transferring color by carving out what you don't want to transfer anymore?

This is a very inspiring presentation.
I have loved the woodblock prints of Japan for many years and have been considering taking some classes.
This concise explaination and demonstration of the methodology takes some of the mystery out of the style but does not remove the magic !
