@kprofscrts Hmmm. Seems like you got a real problem then. Because I'm am such a noob, really, and know not what I do with computers, and can easily use Linux. You sound like a Microsoft shill or someone who is more stupid than I, that cant figure out how to use Linux. Either way I feel sorry for you if cant figure it out, because there is nothing to figure out. Easy as mac and cheese..
Can any one HELP me, I have a problem with my ubuntu 9.04, When it boots up the login sound gets stuck in a loop and never stops. Any help? Oh its not the disk cause it works on my other computer.
a few years ago a couple went out to dinner. later that night the babysitter called and asked if she could put a sheet over the clown statue in the kids bedroom. the father said "get the kids out of the house and I'll call the police. we don't own a clown statue." it turned out that the clown was a murderer escaped from jail. if you don't repost this message on 10 videos the clown will be in your bedroom tonight at 3am with a chainsaw
ive lost alot of files cause my windows fucked up one way or another so ubuntu is my resort and im looking ot get a macbook in the near future and i want ubuntu on it
hi, i'm thinking of migrating to Ubuntu. tired of Windows Vista crap and i don't have that much money to spring on a MacBook. I like the Linux platform stability but I'd like to know if it will run iTunes since i need to sync my iPod from time to time to update songs. Is this possible? Cool vid by the way.
linux is not FREE it is never considered free ask anyone who writes code for it.
it is a low to extremely low cost operating system that has far more man hours invested into it than either windows or mac os.
Beryl is a specific window manager program that runs in linux on top of whatever GUI you are using such as KDE or GNOME Beryl is what makes your desktop look so pretty. otherwise it just looks like a desktop.
How is Linux not free? It doesn't cost me anything when I download it. I know for a fact that anyone can get a hold of the source code. Again: How is Linux not free?
the cost was your time you spent downloading it. the cost was the developers time and effort. nothing is free in the true sense of the word just low-cost :)
well you did. you used up your bandwidth for a period of time you could have done something else with. and the time you took installing and configuring it. Like i said extremely low cost but not free in the true sense of the word.
spikespeigel = fail. saying it cost him money for ubuntu by using his bandwidth for a period of time is like saying that it's costing me money to read your posts and laugh.
2. (countable) A sum of money paid in exchange for goods or services.
Nowhere in those definitions does it say that effort on the developers' part, or use of bandwidth (which is paid for with a set monthly fee nullifying bandwidth=money) makes something unfree. Also just because people do sell it doesn't mean you can't obtain it for free.
Beryl is a window manager that runs in linux, a completely separate program from your OS.
Ubuntu is a linux distribution, it is one of hundreds of different versions of linux, it is widely known as the easiest to use of all the current distributions
yes you must have both to get those effects -_-
and no it most likely will not slow down your computer, because the linux OS makes far better use of your computers hardware than windows ever could. In fact your machine will most likely run faster.
If it's not overdone it's quite efficient. Studies have shown good GUI effects create an environment conducive to productivity. I've found this to be true. In Vista's Aero, in Linux Compiz/XGL/Beryl, and in Mac OS's unique style - all have a unique and good way of creating an interesting and appealing work environment. This just seems to be the most appealing. xD
It's not really pointless because if you have multiple desktops you can put some programs on one desktop and others on another, thus clearing clutter.
It's good for multitasking. You can have several utilities open per desktop. If there was a way to idle processes on the desktop not shown to conserve system resources, that would be the shit.
Hey, i dont know how to do that. I am using ubuntu 6.10 + beryl... so, does exist some program to make it trasparency? Or just a fill lines on terminal and xorg? Could you teach me how to do that? I will be thanks... sorry about english. >P

It is called Compiz now. Use Synaptic and do a search for Compiz. You should be able to have the package manager install it for you.

why the hell would you buy a mac and put ubuntu on it?
The only reason people pay $1500> for a mac is because of the operating system.
Just buy a laptop and put linux on it.

TheLatinProdigy 3 years ago 2
it takes time and effort for the developers to write it doesnt it?
it can be obtained at little or no cost but it is not "free" as in the definition of free...
also people with low bandwidth will often buy the install disks for a few dollars rather than try to download for days on end.
there are people who make money off of linux. so in that sense it is not free just an ultra cheap alternative.
spikespeigel 3 years ago
NO! Linux is FREEE.
Ubuntu is the on of the BEST linux (it really is)
I downloaded 100 percent free.
Firefox took lots of time to evole to what it is, how much does that cost? free...
You might say "Firefox isn't the same"
Imange how many platforms it is made for, updates, and addons wen into it.
Price? FREEE
