I can recognize that Line 6 sound anywhere and like you I think it's crappy. So what else do you use for better tone? Just got me a Peavey Vypyr which I'm not so sure about...btw nice cover
@hardrok69 On these videos, nothing really. The main thing with the Line 6 stuff is not to saturate the tone with drive/gain. Only use enough to get a nice crunch/bite/attack, nothing more. There are other factors too; the original track playing in the background, YouTube compression, etc... all shaping how the audio sounds on the final uploaded video.
Picking, fretting, & muting techniques also play a part in overall tone. But that's mostly trial and error till you find what sounds "Correct".
Hey I'm trying to do a cover, do you use Palm Muting on the first chords? or it's just the overdrive, because I'm trying but it sounds kind of dirty :S
Nice job on the whole song -- and an awesomely nice KV you got there!!! (though the control layout looks a bit weird) is that vol.neck/vol.bridge/tone + 3way? ....or some contorted, deeply disturbed electronic scheme even i (or neal moser) wouldn't even think of :3
@delt01 Thanks! The control layout is bridge volume (closest knob to bridge pickup), under that is neck pickup volume, tone and the 3 way switch. It's a bit strange, and not practical if you're trying to switch pickups on the fly in the middle of a fast run. It's what Dave has used on his guitars for years. Not sure if he came up with it or if it's just what Jackson did on his first KV and he stuck with it.
@Deratronicum Don't have any experience with the KVX10. They're completely different instruments than the USA or CS stuff. If there's a store near you that has the X series in stock I would go check 'em out and see if you like 'em.
i so badly want to learn this song , and i cant because i keep down picking everything it getting harder an harder when i play, i think ill chop my hand and it will put end to it as i wont be able to play anymore,
@LAYUCHEBI Easiest place to start developing your alternate picking is slowly practice a basic scale (pentatonic for example) and alternate pick each note going up and down the scale. Play with a metronome so you're on time and work up your speed as your accuracy improves. Don't start at a tempo that's too fast as you don't want to spend 15 minutes practicing sloppy. If you do you'll just train yourself to be sloppy and it will get worse as you speed things up.
@facialwhiplash Hah, thanks. Not really sure I would have anything unique or different to say than what everyone usually says in that regard. What helped me considerably was I kept a very close eye on how the guitar players I liked played what they were playing. Whether or not they were down picking or alternate picking certain parts, how they were muting the strings, how they attacked the strings, etc. Picking technique often gets overlooked in terms of "riffing" and it's extremely important.
@TheTubeyou777 I guess it's sort of a sweep. I'm definitely not down picking each note. It would be virtually impossible to get that fluid sound doing it that way. It would sound much more frantic.
But I am doing U,U,D - U,U,D - U,D for each set of 8 notes during the intro. When it starts moving down the board it's a mixture of slight sweeps and alternate picking.
@gearslut69 Nah, this was with my crappy Line 6 30 watt Spider practice amp. Having the track in the background definitely colors the overall tone a little bit.
The JVM is in all of the tribute band vids I have up. Some have better audio quality than others. (My Last Words etc).
@k3n2020 If I find some time I might try to get something done up. Main thing is paying attention to the picking technique. To get the intro notes (series of 3 each) smooth you should do:
Up, Up, Down - Up, Up, Down
Then the two note turn around:
Up, Down
That should hopefully help. After that, the line where it descends and gradually builds back up isn't as easy to type out. LOL
gosh, rust in peace is an excellent mosnter of pure awesome riffage, i love all riffs from this album, including the ones in this song. Your cover is awesome. I'm inferring that the solo you did is dave's right? Still, its pretty good. Keep it up man!
@danielflasher95 Thank you. I agree, Rust In Peace pretty much changed everything for me when I first heard it.
Yes, the solo I played here is Mustaines. His stuff is still in the ballpark of what I am capable of as a lead player. Friedman on the other hand is on another planet. Far beyond my abilities... to do well anyway lol.
@bdamotta lol, I hear ya man. Marty's crazy with his melodic solos that are impossible to pull off. Dave's a beast in his own way, and IMO, one of the world's best guitarists. Although I'd have to give it to marty if they ever had a stage guitar battle...again, anyways. But for some reason I found Marty's solo in this song a lot easier than Dave's. Give Marty's a shot, bro, with your excellent skills, you'd be able to pull off that solo no problem I'll bet. Try Tornado of Souls, too.
@jmeproductions0 Maybe if I get some time I could try and do a tutorial video on the intro. I'm usually reluctant to do tutorial videos as most of the ones I see just have people complaining about how the person isn't doing it right etc etc.
@JakeJamm1 I get this question a lot, it was answered on one of my other videos. Basically you need to find a Jackson dealer in your area and get a custom order form. Spec out the guitar the way you want it and take it back to the dealer. The dealer will submit it to Jackson for a price quote. Retail will likely be anywhere between $5500-$6300 give or take. What you pay will vary depending on the dealer you purchase from.
Was originally going to go with Poplar, but since my Black KV is Poplar I decided to go with Alder. Glad I did, I am very happy with the guitar. Alder is also a little easier on my aging back LOL.
I don't think there is a "best". I think there are particulars though.
Alder/Poplar with a Maple neck-thru with a Kahler 3300 series bridge and either a Seymour Duncan JB or Distortion will get you very close to that classic Megadeth tone.
Mustaines Dean guitars are all Mahogany with set-neck construction and string-thru body bridges. This typically produces a warmer/darker tone. I suspect to offset this he switched to the active pickups which are very very bright.
Hands down dude. Hey, are you 'slight palm-muting' the intro and the solo riff? I'm stuck at that part
7Saburo 1 day ago
@7Saburo I may be. If I recall there's a bit of muting between both the left and right hands to keep the strings from ringing out too much.

@kopileegh16 Thanks
They're Seymour Duncan JBs. The bridge pickup has no logo on the bobbin and the neck has a Jackson pickup cover over it.
I find for me that active pickups don't really get that classic mid-range crunch. They tend to sound very scooped.
bdamotta 1 year ago
@bdamotta
very good point about active pickups, Seymour Duncan mustaine signature pups are pretty awesome
