i just got a guinea pig today. He scatters underneath something when i open the cage and i hand fed him some carrots and he just snatched them out of my palm and went back under something. Anything i can do so he will trust me more and let me hold him

@21askingalexandria21 well give him chance to get used to you. leave him in the cage for about an hour and let him roam around, and exsplore his new home. Gentley stroke him with your finger when he walks past. This sounds crazy but say his name lots and talk to him, he will get used to you and feel more comfortable. Then after a while do the same but with your hand stroking him the directon of his fur. Then after a while you can pick him up give him chance to get used to you! he will be nervous

@21askingalexandria21 Don't let him take the carrot, haha. All guinea pigs have this instinct to grab the food and run into hiding to eat it. I just grip the treat VERY firmly and refuse to let go. You end up playing a weird tug of war with the treat for a while, but eventually the pig will learn that he can't just grab a treat and run, he has to eat it out of your hand.

@21askingalexandria21 take away the hiding element until the night (its house) and in the morning (around the same time) remove it until he or she gets used to you. I did this for about a day and my guinea pig doesn't flinch when I put my hand near her or try to feed her, she also eats from my hand and doesn't run from removing the hiding element. Also you should pick it up everyday for anything above 20 mins + dont stroke it a lot, the calming voice is more important.

@M4carbine97boy They all have different personalities, just like a human. I used to have 2 guinea pigs and they were both very gentle. Guinea pigs can nibble your fingers sometimes, but it doesn't hurt, just tickles. *Sigh* I wish I never had to sell them..
