I know, but his books should not be taken literally, If you study his novels and works in the other way. It clearly shows that Rizal Rizal was actually a reformer who wanted the Spanish to treat the people of the Philippines with dignity and respect and grant them what we today would call human rights. He was willing for the Philippines to remain within the Spanish empire for a while because he thought were not ready yet. we still need to learn from them.

i would have to disagree, his novels are a satire and should be taken quite literally. After all these are the books that the spaniards executed him for. In the beginning i would have to agree with you. He did favor staying in the Spanish empire, but Filibusterismo, which in Tagalog loosely translates in to sedition in English, clearly under lines the corruption of the spanish empire, clearly there was nothing to learn from the Spaniards. that's why i feel he changed his mind in the end

well thanks, but the Philippines wasn't receiving resourced from Spain. It was the opposite, Spain was bleeding us dry, hence the label colony. Philippines is rich in natural resources. Its a rich country like many other third world countries we just never receive the profits. We don't have to be under colonial rule to learn, look at the U.S or Japan. Education was present in the Philippines way before the Spanish, we had our own alphabet. Spain didn't start us.

also, the friars who controlled education in the Philippines at the time was purposely keeping the populace ignorant and superstitious. Think about it, would you really "educate" your slave so he can realize he's a slave and cut your throat? That's how the Spanish were thinking, don't fool your self friend, the Spanish didn't have anything for us. In 500 years they didn't teach us anything useful. Rizal realized this in the end if not all along.

@caddict69 : rizal is NOT pure spanish blood. he is, like joma, of CHINESE descent. clearly, you don't know your history. in fact joma's grandparents (Sison's) were originally from Lingayen, a town in the province of Pangasinan. The Sisons are one of the many descendants of Limahong's men when the Chinese rebel (some say he was a bandit) retreated to Lingayen after a failed siege of Manila.
