Damn I remember this game, it was the first and best game I ever had. Rayman will always be the best in my books and that's a lot seeing as I'm fourteen, I miss my PC!
Jeez... If there's something I hate in games, it's breaking the fourth wall, especially with controls. Damn it, was that "approach that special stone and murphy will tell you the keyboard controls via telepathy" stuff really necessary? It's embarrassing. Showing the hints trough game popups was that hard? Ok, at least here it's an excuse to have a funny character...
Damn, I thought I'll break my monitor when in HP3 Ron and Hermione started to talk about keyboard controls...
I think a better way to approach it is to have the characters tell you how to do something, but omit mention of corresponding buttons.
Also, this would loosely be considered Painting The Fourth Wall. . Other than Ly the Fairy and Globox (a tiny bit), nothing else in the game tries to even approach it to give the player instructions.
@Saestrol I totally agree with the first part of your comment.
And actually, that problem is not that big in Rayman 2. Important thing is that characters in this game... never use their voice when commenting over controls. You can aswell treat them as nameless popups with pictures of characters :)
I think that question should be the other way around. All the others (including Rayman 2 on the PS2) are the most similar where the PSX version is largely different.
@MustachioMedia For me it is a big deal. It ruins the game's atmosphere. Some games are for me like movies, and imagine if... for example (Potter again, sorry, that one just drilled in my memory too much) if Ron said in the movie "press left mouse button to cast alochomora". The protagonist in these situations should be like "WTF?! What mouse? What button?".
@SomeFluffer64 Popups. Tip-type popups not related to characters in any way, or just a goddamn chunk of text somewhere on the screen which would explain stuff without involving the characters. Controls and tips are part of GAME MECHANICS, not STORY, and characters in the game with a story shouldn't be even aware that it's a game (with several exceptions).
@SomeFluffer64 But to be honest, back then, most people thought it was lucrative for characters to explain to the player what buttons to press on your controller. But unfortunately--because NOBODY reads manuals these days, stuff like this is pretty commonplace.
I think there are a few right ways to do it. And in Rayman 3, it uses humor.
If your wondering what it's like, its the opposiote of rayman 2. Its 2-D cartoony and happy. The only character returning from it in Ray2 is only Rayman.
Sae, do you know that thing with big eyes that follows you is a boss from Rayman 1? I didn't play Raymin 1 (I had a Nintendo 64) thought I have seen it. Have you played Rayman 1?
Well though you know the real story, Rayman along with the other important characters (Ly, Globox, Clark etc.) were fighting off Razorbeard's invasion. They were doing great...
...until the Pirates do the unthinkable and broke the core of the world into into 1,000 Yellow Lums. Then nearly all hope was lost as they got captured.
Razorbeard probably thought Rayman wouldn't be a treat anymore but he thought wrong as we later see.
nope, you're both wrong. They're both real, the N64 music was just synthesized. If this sountrack was used in the N64, it would have to have the quality decreased really badly, so they synthesized it and did it in GM instead of... I don't know, WAV's, probably.
I think the purple lum leads to a village of Globoxes in the DC version. I've played the n64 pc PS1 and ds versions of rayman 2. They haven't got that lum there. I dunno about the PS2 version. Never played this version. Thanks for the upload!
they don't make games like that any more ;(

FUN FACT: the creature that appears at 1:05 (The thing with the big eyes) is Moskito, a boss that appears in the original Rayman.

I to love that Kings. Hilarious. Also...I'm wrong, probably, but I think that Purple Lum was there in the 64 version.
But as said, I'm probably wrong.
LaZodiac 3 years ago 2
Heh heh, you are right about being wrong unfortunately.
That Purple Lum leads to the Village of Globox, a place that can only be accessed in the Dreamcast version of the game.
Saestrol 3 years ago
Is the Rayman 2 website for the Dreamcast still up and running at all? Just asking.

It's been undecided. They just co-op amongst themselves the King position by exchanging the crown when their turn are over.
