I remember when Sharansky was released and told to walk in a straight line across a bridge to freedom. In one last act of defiance he weaved from side to side in his heavy coat and Russian hat. I am also reminded of the joke about the 2 Jewish prisoners in the Soviet prison. The newer arrival tells the long time inmate that he has been sentenced to 15 years for doing nothing. The other replies, you must have done something, for doing nothing a Jew only receives 10 years in the Soviet Union.

It was us leaving Russia with our 2-year old Max sitting on his father shoulders ( that picture brought tears to my eyes).

We left for freedom of the West at the same time in July 1978, when Natan was sentenced...my heart was going out to him.

He is my personal Hero.

I think you misunderstood the intent of the song. "Mother Russia" is ironic, not "a pure mockery." It is a phrase used by people who loved their native land but were not loved back; it conveys the terrible ambivalence of leaving one's mother, for whom one feels love even if she is, or has been, abusive. There are many Russian patriotic writers who condemn the excesses of the Soviets, especially Stalin, and the Tsars before them.

Funny part is - by today this song is severely outdated. According to Boruh Gorin (Head of public relations dept. Federation of Jewish Commons of Russia) in 2003 approx. 10 thousands Jews left Russia to Israel. 50 thousands left Israel to Russia (source: BBC). By Oct. 2007 over 100.000 Jews already returned to Russia and Ukraine and additional approx. 70 000 live in Moscow 'temporarily'. Return immigration is growing, many left elderly parents in Israel for now and just visit them.
