This definitely needs to come out on DVD in America. The English dub released there is so badly butchered with scenes cut and rearranged so out of order that the suspense and mystery is completely killed.
I have the DVD in Japanese with English subs, I got it at Chiller Theatre from a very reputable dealer and the picture quality is quite nice.
The actor playing the "Gas Man," Yoshio Tsuchiya, is a Toho legend. He played Rikichi in "7 Samurai", and also in a film called "The Bad Sleep Well" again alongside Toshiro Mifune, as well as the leader of the Xians in "Monster Zero" and the dommed Mr. Shindo in "Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah 1991." The man is a legend.
My fave non-Godzilla film happens to be "Frankenstein Conquers The World" and the sequel, "War Of The Gargantuas."
Both are very moody and surreal films, due in NO small part to the fantastic musical scores of Akira Ifukube. The man really knew how to make some incredible music for these films!
Toho was once one of the most prolific (if not THE most prolific) company in the filed of this sort of work, and they were the masters of the miniature set piece!
The main antagonist of this movie is the human vapour Mizuno. He's a librarian who is now a darn criminal... after a guy here done some experiments to him.
Music from this movie turned up frequently in the TV series, ULTRA Q, and in some episodes of ULTRAMAN (because it's by the same composer, Kunio Miyauchi)!
The music is completely replaced in the US version.
Again, this is a fantastic movie and I am honored to have the DVD in my collection.
Toho more than proved it's mettle for it's variety of non Godzilla science fiction, and their committment to the Samurai genre with the Kurosawa-Mifune classics.
Tsuchiya-San is excellent in this movie. I can never say enough about this movie for some reason!
This movie was a great showcase of Toho FX. Combined with the fine acting of Kurosawa veteran Yoshio Tsuchiya, you get the story of a truly tortured soul driven mad by ultimate power.
No doubt that to a degree, Tsuchiya's character was inspired by Claude Raines in the original "The Invisible Man." These two would have been great movies for a double bill :)
I see you have Gasu Ningen and Denso Ningen's trailers; any chance of seeing the trailer to Bijo to Ekitainingen (The H-Man)? Three unique Toho pictures...
Also, be sure to look for Tsuchiya as Mr. Shindo in the 1991 remake of Godzilla VS. King Ghidorah. His character is very central to the story. Great ending too!
I love this movie. One of Toho's better non-Godzilla films with GREAT special FX. Yoshio Tsuchiya is a wonderful actor-he always reminded me of Claude Rains' version of The Invisble Man with his ability to play tortured souls to the hilt.
this music used to use on ultra q old japanese drama series before ultra man.
yachigusa kaoru, so beautiful. her movie miyamoto musashi also starring mifune toshiro gets academy best foreign film award back in 195x.

ANy of Ishiro Honda's film focusing on a character is fantastic. This, H-Man, Matango ... all are some of the best science fiction produced.

Y' mean, the movie Tomei ningen?
TheXenomorph1 2 years ago
What I mean is that with regard to the Invisible Man, is that the Vapor Man shares some of the same power-hungry\career criminal tendencies.
Both characters became drunk with
their power and become bolder and bolder, only Tsuchiya's character has more stability. That's where the line is drawn.
But yes I have heard of "Tomei Ningen" I just haven't seen it. I'll have to get to it sometime!

Unfortunately, there's no DVD or VHS for that film.
Until now.

further proof that all vapor coming from humans is deadly! looks like a great bit of 60's scifi from Japan.

Well actually, the human vapor is an ordinary man that can turn into a vapor after a scientist done an experiment to him.
