I'm kinda surprised... to me it sounds like in U.S. this really wasn't a movie from which you'd expect much... In my country (Czech republic) it was actually aired way too much on every TV channel possible... from 1994 or 1995 to probably 1998 every TVs were airing this movie repeatedly, so let's say you saw it 3 to 5 times a year
@GrapplerMaster No, they'll still watch the movies. Hearing how the movie plays out is entirely different than actually seeing how it plays out. You're completely wrong.
@GoongalaGoongala Not "completely". some people can still enjoy a movie no matter how much about the movie they already know, others don't even watch trailers to avoid ANY kind of spoilers.
my parents don't really care for this movie, but I enjoy this movie. It's funny and one thing interesting that I noticed while watching it today was it's funny how Bill Murray's character is really egocentric and an ass, but as he starts to change who he is, that camera guy Larry who seemed nice and what not in the beginning starts to turn into Bill Murray's egocentric character
2:53...OK...I had the exact same idea. By the way, the creators of the movie elaborate that the main character of the movie goes through this cycle for around 10 years meaning that he has made roughly 3,650 different timelines. Speaking of timelines, for the LoZ timelines I happen to be a splittist which is why I thought in that way.
This is truly one of the most brilliant movies ever made. And you KNOW there's some social commentary going on here, symbolizing our mundane, everyman life, and how every single day might as well be the same day over and over again. I love it!
Yes it's a fantastic movie, but I live in Punxsutawney PA, they play it every year all day on Groundhog Day....and....it's Groundhog Day 10,000 people do wait out in the freezing cold over night to worship a rodent,I even did a college paper on the history and called it a cult
It's love hate for me, Movie wise it's great, even though it was filmed in Illinois they still put some things in there that actually are a part of the town. But it's Punxsutawney...fuck.
@Clayvman07 Damn. I first saw this movie when I was 10 back during a summer brake with my cousins in Mexico. Saw it back again after 15 years and I thought was funny. But telling me that these people are actually for reals in PA is just fucking hilarious.
@Clayvman07 I'll agree with you. I know a bunch of people that live in Punxsy or in areas around there (Brookville specifically) and Punxsy really is a shithole.
@Clayvman07 Ha well I live a couple of towns away from Woodstock, Illinois where this entire movie was filmed, the town makes you feel like your in the damn movie! It's kinda all they got...lol. Just like the movie they do the same ceremony every groundhog day, its lame but for some reason I kinda like it.
@snowboardman420 I live in punxsutawney where this movie was suppose to be filmed they wanted to change some of the store fronts and the fucking people in charge wouldn't let them so they filmed it in IL
The moral and point to this movie is to teach people to live like there is no tomarrow. but not in a bad way.... for example...if you always wanted to learn a diffrent language, tell your crush you love her, or just all around better yourself and the world around you. If more people lived that way, there would be more happy people in this world and less regrets.
@THEGAMEGOD7777 Oh, you're going to love this one. So every year there's a festival in the town of Punxsutawney, PA. (It's like a village in the country. Same deal.) On February second, they trot out the groundhog and the mayor announces the groundhog sees its shadow (seriously) and so there will be an additional six weeks of winter. It's funny because sometimes it's overcast and there is no shadow, but since the solstice is on a set date, they have to say he saw one. It's really weird.
@THEGAMEGOD7777 I should clarify this a bit. The deal is that if the groundhog casts a visible shadow and then lays eyes on it, that is supposed to signal an early spring and I think a plentiful harvest, though the harvest part has largely fallen by the wayside. So, shadow: six weeks until spring. No shadow: early spring. But as I said before, they always have to say there's a shadow even when there clearly isn't. It's a big deal for rural Pennsylvanians. They hold a fair and all kinds of crap.
The reset time thing reminds me of Majora's Mask. You feel a bit crazy because you keep re-living the same game and if you mess up, you need to re-do it again. Also, change the story by completing certain missions or not doing them at all result in alternate situations and timelines or what-if's happen depending on your actions. Main difference about this movie is it occurs only on "Groundhog Day" that one day, while in contrast you get 3 days in Majora's Mask.
this movie is on tv a lot lately but I would just watch a couple minutes and stop. it seemed painfully average, but now that i get the plot Im gonna give it a try.
Maybe I'm the only one... but after watching this movie about 8 times I began to think the black bartender knew what was happening to Phil and was "in on the joke" so to say.
My favorite part of the entire movie is the piano lesson scene when the teacher asks Bill Muray's character if it was his first lesson and he responds "no but my dad was a piano mover."
i was on my bus from school<going home, and i saw this plack nailed to a side of a building (remember, this is a very VERY small town) i read the plack and it says "Groundhog day was filmed here...
It's the greatest thing ever, people say that it's the same thing in all eight episodes, but no, it's much more then that, they are saying that most animes are like that, same thing in each episode.
I watched groundhog day and it was great. On groundhog day this year I didnt go to school because of really bad weather and on Encore they had a 24 hour marathon of Groundhog day and I remeber every line to this day and I kinda feel like phil and when I watch it I say his famous line.
In the original script there actually WAS an evil curse, placed on Phil by a vengeful girlfriend. I've never been so happy that something was cut from a film as when I heard that.
About your wondering what would happen if he didn't go to bed... he killed himself several times and got "reset" to the bed, also spent a night in jail...
I had the same idea about the alternate universes. Pretty creepy to think there's like a dozen Bill Murrary corpses moldering in the dimensions where he killed himself!
ok beside the weird things what james noticed I realy don't understand one thing, why this movie is called groundhog day if the movie goes about somebody who is stuck in 1 day that repeat over and over again
If you like Groundhog Day you should give the short-lived tv series "Day Break" a try. Taye Diggs stars as an undercover narcotics detective with the LAPD. He realizes he is being framed for the murder of a man he did not know and tries to prove his innocence. It turns out as well he is stuck in a never ending time loop for unknown reasons until he uses the repeating day to help him on his mission to expose the conspiracy and those putting him and his family in jeopardy.
this episode reminds me of that one episode of supernatural where somewhat similiar stuff happened with a timeloop.. anyone know what i'm talking about? :s
Watched this movie when it came on TV here. It was a really awesome flick, i always thought that the timeloop stopped because Murray stopped acting like a "jerk" and started acting kindly.
How is everyone missing this? The entire movie is based on the 5 stages of grief (when dying). Denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance. The denial and anger parts are obvious. The bargaining when he tries to take advantage of his situation to cope with it. Depression is pretty evident when you drive yourself and a groundhog off a cliff (don't drive angry), and finally acceptance when he comes to accept his new life, which also when the loop breaks and the old Phil "dies".
@brynj13 no actually. it was a deleted scene but according to the script Bill Murray was cursed by an ex-girlfreind to live the same day over and over and over again. why does she do this? Becasue Bill Murray was an asshole and she wanted to get back at him. This is true. Look it up
You should do a film location video on this film. Most of the shots happen in a small town called Woodstock, Illinois. I actually went there last year. Not much has changed, and you can actually find the B&B that Phil stays at outside the town square (its still a B&B). It's even got a plaque dedicated to the film.
I saw this review thinking this was one of those 'ok' movies. Well i found the Tape of it, and luckly found my VHS player. I Watched the movie and its Amazing, Everything James said is true.
I watched that movie when I was about 14 or something and I fucking loved it and especially the fact that it didn't explain why it was happening, the movie just didn't seem to need it.
I think my favorite movies are these kinds of cool wormhole timejumping movies (and also the psychological thrillers when the protagonist can't define real from the world they're in)
I wanna drink some Rolling Rock with The Nerd and Motherfucker Mike and play some shitty NES games. Sounds like good times! We'll even let the nostalgia critic and his brother Rob play, then we'll kick their asses!
This is on cable tv 6 times a week in pennsylvania. On 6 diffrent stations. Aaaaaalllllll yyyyyyeeeeaaaaarrrrr lllllooooonnnggggg

@brynj13 Nice interpretation! Certainly makes sense.

@brynj13 no actually. it was a deleted scene but according to the script Bill Murray was cursed by an ex-girlfreind to live the same day over and over and over again. why does she do this? Becasue Bill Murray was an asshole and she wanted to get back at him. This is true. Look it up

@brynj13 Wrong: If he went to accept his new, eternal life, then he wouldn't have made all those changes so the new day could come.

You should do a film location video on this film. Most of the shots happen in a small town called Woodstock, Illinois. I actually went there last year. Not much has changed, and you can actually find the B&B that Phil stays at outside the town square (its still a B&B). It's even got a plaque dedicated to the film.

I grew up about 20 miles from where most of this movie was filimed (shot in Woodstock, Illinois). To this day it's still a great movie.
