OK fellow beginners - this is bad instruction. Forget trying to just 'drop in' the snare on his one-ee-and-a-two-ees. It goes like this: 'one-and-two...' normally - i.e. (hh)-(hh)-(hh+snare), and then the faster pattern is (hh)-(snare)-(hh)-(snare)-(hh)­-(hh+snare)-(hh) .. do that slowly to get the feel - then make that hand pattern fit the timing.

I agree with the comment that he holds the sticks to high. If you hold the sticks that high you have a zero chance of getting any bounce and rebound happening which is an important part of drumming. Not to knock the instructor, but i have to agree that these guys on expert village seem to be missing something or they need some or more instruction themselves. Thanks! You've gotten some rough comments on this vid, I don't know why. They are probably assuming that you always count as you play, instead of feeling it. Perhaps they don't see that counting can be a tool to *analyze" the beat, breaking it down into components, for teaching purposes (including self-teaching). Then, once learned, the beat should of course be incorporated into playing by feel when playing a song or jamming with others.

You practice the beats so you can play them and incorporate them without thinking too much about the mechanics of it. You have a palette of beats and fills and songs to work from. Then, you try to play them with feeling, to underpin and enhance the song, and make the whole band work together.
