  • Why did Mike pender quit the group,I would be interested to know

  • Why did Mike pender quite the group, anyone know

  • i saw them last summer :D went with my pops

  • Tony and Chris were my boyhood heroes, sadly solo success eluded them both,I'm so glad this footage survives.

  • Ah, such beauties. Miss them, and that distinctive sound.

  • Tony Jackson left the band shortly after this performance, replaced by Frank Allen who's still with them. but the big blow to the group came when Chris Curtis, the drummer, front man and musically the leader of the group left. Yet they have carried on to this day. What's really remarkable is that just about all the groups and artists of that era performed without stage monitors. They couldn't hear themselves most of the time!

  • what a class group..

  • Crap mix! Yes But Chris Curtis's harmonies are spot on, lovely guy and sadly missedX (Nice one Chris!)

  • love this band!!

The Beatles named them with the stones as 1 of their fav bands.

  • @bluegrassreb1

The Beatles never were much into the stones music, to repetetive for their taste, and jagger copied everything the beatles did 6 months later, just like the beatles didn't care much for the searchers musically.

from a 71 interbview: He's (Jagger) obviously so upset by how big the Beatles are compared with him, he never got over it.

you should read the intenrview, john telling some truths.

  • @OropherThranduil Send me the link to it. I watched JL on TV in 1964 stating how much he liked The Searchers, when asked who the Beatles fave bands were. Lucky me, I was alive at the time and hung onto every word spoken by the Beatles when they were on the news. By 1971 JL wasn't even crazy about the Beatles. They broke up, there was so much acrimony.

  • John Lennon never was crazy about the beatles, 64 was probably the last year where you could say that.

when they stopped touring in 66, after the caldestick park concert george said no i'm not a beatle anymore, meaning the public figure and image that was the beatles up to that day ended.

and the searchers one was a jokei guess, just like Paul saying beofre Till there was you: It's from our "Favorite American group, Sophie Tucker."

which, you bet, wasn't the truth.

  • @OropherThranduil When I saw JL interview on TV, he didn't seem to be joking. Like I said, send me the link to this article with John telling his truths. Please and thank you. :-)

  • Ya gotta love the honesty of the early '60s - no straightening of teeth on the Brits! Check out the high-water pants and Beatle Boots of the day!!

  • What a shame they didnt last longer , they got the chops. But they had a string of hits, remember them well.

  • Chris Curtis was super. I was 10 when they were number one in England. Chris was the bee's knees. Lot's of flair and style and a great drummer. I think it very harsh to call him manic. Any way, i have good memories of him.

  • @songsamsung : you are probably correct. Looking back on those times from today, do you not agree that the Smart Suits, short hairstyles etc , look infinitley better than the 'Scruffyness' of beards, long hair, flairs, sometimes wasted looks on some individuals in the late 60's early 70's ? Ask todays teens/20 yr olds., i bet they would pick the 50's early 60's as being far superior for fashion.

  • Might I suggest that the real reason why The Searchers "ran out of steam" was their outdated hairstyles which began to look increasingly unstylish as the 60s wore on. Their songs were still great of course but they were selling records to teenage fans who didn't want to be associated with anyone who wasn't wearing the latest styles.

  • The Searchers

    John McNally

    Chris Curtis

    Tony Jackson

    Mike Pender

    ROCK!

  • No one is Perfect in this world (well, maybe one exception in my eyes haha ! ) Chris Curtis with all his faults was an unsung hero. It'r imperfections that make people interesting, John Lennon, Oliver Reed, George Best etc who wants a 'Whiter than White' ? Curtis's brilliance never had a chance to Bloom, but he was (i believe) a true genius...

  • Thank you to all who gave a thumbs up when I was devilwoman52. Thank you, fabio571986 for taking the time and work to put this video together for the rest of us to enjoy. None of us gets paid for posting videos, we do it for the love of the music and the singers. I will never understand why people feel the need to be negative and rude. Keep up the good work! CCF/Formerly Devilwoman52

  • @ChrisCurtisFan Love this song ! Definitely one of my faves !

Thank you for the fantastic footage fabio571986 !

Thank you for sharing CCF ! Enjoyed it !

  • He was a manic individual prone to voicing trenchant views without considering the effect upon others. He antagonised Ray McFall, the owner of the Cavern Club,Curtis rarely mixed socially with his fellow band members, preferring his own company.

. Accounts of the break-up differ but there were some significant incidents during the tour and Curtis had become unreliable. He was abusing a variety of substances to the point where he fell off the stage at one venue.

  • I Don't like the The Drummer he seems bossy !

  • @veronneau007 How in the world would you come to that ridiculous conclusion from watching this video?!!!! Chris Curtis was the Leader, the spokesman, and the best drummer on the planet. He made more contributions to this band than most people can even imagine. Besides that he is RIP, and there is nothing kind about speaking ill of the dead.

  • @ChrisCurtisFan

He was a manic individual prone to voicing trenchant views without considering the effect upon others. He antagonised Ray McFall, the owner of the Cavern Club,Curtis rarely mixed socially with his fellow band members, preferring his own company.

  • @veronneau007 And your point is? Like Elvis Presley or the Beatles never did drugs. Helloooooooooooo? Please find some other place to watch ohhhhh, I'm guessing -- religious videos would be your speed. Or better yet, some other website. The internet has a lot to offer perfectionists. Have a wonderful life!

  • @veronneau007 Chris & Tony never got on, Chris was the leader but he wouldn't accept any ideas or listen to anyone , special Tony, everything had to be Chris's way, he wound Tony up so much that he quit, Chris fell of stage in 1966 and injured his hand so badly he couln't play drums for many years, so he quit as well to become a producer. Sadly Tony and Chris are both dead.

  • @jrgboy FYI, it was Tony who had to be his way or the highway. When he couldn't sing lead on Needles, he had a hissyfit. Chris said NO to Tony on Needles because Chris believed in singing songs like you meant it. Tony sang Needles like he was reading it out of a book. It's documented on liner notes. Unbelievable. You don't know anything about why they each quit. Spend 5 years researching and come back with the facts.

  • @ChrisCurtisFan I have read Chris's interviews with Spencer Leigh from 1998 & 2003 and seen the Sounds of the 60's interview with Tony, both come over as quite bitter about the break up.

  • @jrgboy Indeeed!!! They both needed the other Searchers as much as The Searchers needed them. It's all very sad that there was nobody in charge who could provide business advice and leadership to four very young musicians who made magic when they were singing together: John, Mike, Chris and Tony were the best! You are absolutely right on. :-)

  • @veronneau007 I don't like you, you seem judgmental. See how stupid that sounds?

  • this is my favourite searchers song

  • THE BEATLES WILL FOREVER BE THE BEST

  • 1st The Beatles

    2nd and the others:)

  • 1st The Beatles

    2nd and the rest:)

  • @ayicarandang Wrong Manfredd Mann were more than a match for them in 64 Paul Jones had a haunting voice

  • @burnley5960 who is Manfredd Mann,Paul Jones?

  • @burnley5960 - though I like Manfred Mann and Paul Jones, IMO there is no comparison. You must not forget the almost magical song writing ability of the Lennon-McCartney team and their harmonizing: something they practiced on religiously. And their unique personalities.

However, to each his own. I love the British groups, yet I know people who think they collectively ruined rock & roll. But the abilities of the Beatles is hard to deny, as is their devotion, especially in the early years.

  • @Cissy2cute Paul jones had a much better voice than John Lennon,as did frankie Vallie Dawn go Away is a match for anything the beatles did

  • Oh!!!! Listen your left headphone!!! How amazing!!!

  • wow they sound like the beatles.!! thats mersybeat for ya

  • The drummer is interesting!

  • I like 'em!

  • Comment removed

  • Woooww super!! Chris Curtis toujours présent!

  • Who is singing the dominant vocal @ 1;34 ? The drummer is not apparently singing at that point tho I thought he had that harmony at that point. This band was The BeaTles without their writing. Musically and vocally they were the equal of The BeaTles.

  • Linda musica.Baita banda..É prá ouvir trepando deliciosamente com a mulher mais gostosa que existir

  • long live the memory of a great band

  • Remember this being played at home many times very loudly.

    Shame about the sound recording.

  • Keep munching those taco's mate, some day someone will hear ya.

  • @legwithanattitude Keep munching those angry pills "mate".

  • @SuperTacoMan100 get educated fella and keep you stupid comments to yourself.

  • If you ever see the whole poll winners concert then you'll know that ALL the bands had trouble with the awful mike balance etc.

  • Hi Roger,

Those polll winners concerts the sound was crap, but who gave a toss, long live the poll winners concerts

  • agreed

  • it was perfectly mastered except for that one mic

  • Hey Guys, Try Listening to "Someday we're gonna Love again" one of my Favs by the Seacrhers"...Their songs here had great melodies, and Harmonies were beautiful on the Discs, Live its very hard ...you know.. I thought Mike Pinder was one of Lead singers...any body know who the lead singers were? Very underrated group, of The British Invasion . I think

  • @ jjs499 The lead singers were: Mike Pender, Tony Jackson, and Chris Curtis (the Drummer with that amazing high harmony). My channel is dedicated to Chris and his memory. RIP, Chris and Tony.

  • Hey, no matter if anyone was off key or not I loved this song when it was first released, and still do..........warts and all.

  • @ TheICewitch54 -- God bless you! I, too love this video -- warts and all! LOL!! I would love any video where I can see this beautiful band!

  • TVM, I am not a Searches expert but I do know what I like

  • In future don't ever use that "Sound Mixer" Man again!:(

  • kkk days lol

  • Look you are entitiled to your opinion and me to mine,he was off key and was he to blame for Tony Jackson leaving?

  • Chris wanted to sing ballads and Tony did not. Chris made the group a success. He brought the percussion sound to the group and was the brains. He was good friends with McNally who started the band. After Chris left, their songs were never played in the U.S.

  • This was a beautiful song, and Chris was not off key. He was singing his part of the harmony. I enjoy watching them perform. Who cares if the audio isn't perfect! RIP, Chris.

  • The man is deceased. Would you give it a rest about the audio. Surely there are other videos you can watch.

  • Live harmonies back then.........very scary

  • What an awesome 'friggin song...these guys were fantastic...

  • my favorite song of all time by the Searchers

  • Awesome!

  • Very good

  • Why do they hold thier guitars so high up to thier chests when they play?

    Looks uncomfortable to me.

  • Ha... Just seemed to be what a lot of them did back then. On the opposite side of the spectrum, I don't know the hell some of these rock guitarists play their guitars slung so low... Looks like it would kill my wrist! They must be flexible freaks... Some of the greats actually are/were... have abnormally long fingers/pinkies etc. Look at the pinkie on Paul Gilbert... a radical guitarist!

  • The times they were about to change, & some perfectly good pop bands, such as Gerry & the Pacemakers, Dave Clark 5, the Searchers couldn't make to the switch to more topical music & faded away. Too bad, because they probably still had good pop music left in them.

  • The problem here is that one guy's mike is turned up way too high. Still, I love it. Miss these great songs :(

  • Chris had a very unusual voice that made their sound very distinctive. He was the star and the brains behind the band. I loved them, and it's very sad that Chris passed away a few years ago.

  • I love this song. The imperfect sound quality even gives it another dimension which I also like.

  • Tks. for the Great Searches Band ...They were my favorites. Up till to-day I still know all the words of their sings. This was pertically my favorite 1.!

     Tks. again -:)

  • Morphed eventually into Deep Purple,

  • for reals?

  • How's that? I don't think so, what's the connection to Deep Purple?

  • Wonderful golden OLDIE !!!

  • This is a wonderful video.

    I really like this song.

    Great group.

Thank you very much for posting this!

  • London Based UK Radio stopped giving their releases airplay, as they wanted to promote the London groups. The lousy bastards. They couldn't do it with The Beatles, as they were already too popular. And if you were a Glasgow band, forget it.

  • I just have to laugh at Chris Curtis singing in this video. Maybe its the poor sound quality but still, lol

  • The Bass Player Is Tony Jackson, So It Isnt Alvin Stardust / Shane Fenton.

  • these blokes went at it hammer n tongs, eh? is that elvin stardust on bass?...shumm day...great.

  • In fact, all the bar bands would have a Searchers set.

  • Not sure why people say various bands are underrated. Its in the eye of the beholder. never thought they were underrated.

  • Being underrated means we don't hear of them much while hearing of all those other bands a lot. I loved them then...and they look pretty corny now, but then again so do lots of the other bands of that era. Except of course, the Stones, Beatles, and the Who. They look like they could fit anywhere anytime.

  • @langer 1500

...ey du dreckiges Opfer, chill mal uns genieß den den Song!!!

  • thank you...

  • One of the best bands from the ''british invasion''. Very underrated. I also like that they don't have the same haircut like the Beatles or many others. Brylcreem rules! ;)

  • very nice to have a look into the old times. thanks a lot!

  • qualität sollte passen

    tipp

  • Bill Wyman also held the bass in a similar style ;)

  • love the searchers!,see the way tony jackson holds his bass way,way high?,didn't a few other bands hold instrument high in those days?,like gerry & the pacemakers etc?.

  • I love this song!

  • the great Mersey sound !!!It will live on forever!not like this music you hear today !It will be long forgotten in a few yrs and there will b a new sound !BUT the 60S will live on !long live the 60s!!!!

  • Excellent video!!loved the Searchers !Who cares about the audio? after all this is a classic from the 60s!the video is great !thanx for posting !keep em coming !!!

  • With a good manager they would have been HUGE

  • Unfortunately, that's the nature of the beast with tape. Considering the age, however, it's really quite good.

  • Please cut a little slack on sound quality. In those days, a musician plugged in his amp and plugged in his guitar. In most cases, the musician stage left couldn't even hear the musician stage right.

These days, the average club band has equipment these guys never even dreamed of: Floor wedges, wet mix, dry mix, this mix, that mix and pedals from here to hell and back.

This is the real deal with no safety net.

    Excallent!

  • I played in a band during the sixties, in big venues you could not hear your own voice, you just hoped you were singing in tune!

  • Scimiteri1948 I too played in a band - nowhere near as big as yours - but a piece of cotton in one ear always helped.

  • Lovely vocal harmonies. Fine material.

  • a great message that I wish I had heard earlier...

  • Sory Chris, but you lost the plot there

  • Oh yeah John sorry !

  • 1st-the kinks

    2nd-the beatles

    3rd-the searchers

  • @fabio571986 1st-The Beatles

    2nd-The Searchers

    3rd-The Kinks

  • @fabio571986 and the Hollies :))

  • @fabio571986

    first beatles

  • @fabio571986 pfft how can you say one is better then the other.. lameshit

  • I have heard that Chad Curtis passed away last year, can anyone verify this?

  • Sadly it's true.

Vocalist Tony Jackson (the one on the left of the picture with Mike Pender) is also no longer with us.

  • Actually his name was Chris Curtis

  • @urbanfox93 Actually it wasn't! It was Chris Crummey and I know this as he is my uncle!

  • @jsgbuckton Hi - Well I certainly can't argue with you about your uncle's name. However I think it's pretty well documented that the original drummer with the Searchers was always well known as Chris Curtis. That's the guy on drums in this video; and that's the name on all the album covers. Of course that may just be his stage name .....but it was definitely his name.

  • @urbanfox93 Chris Curtis was his stage name. He was Chris Crummey.

  • Pretty much every band that performed on these New Musical Express concerts sounded rough. In fact, these bands usually didnt sound good live at all as they always had to compete with screaming chicks to be heard.

  • these guys are great! the beatles are #1 long live the beatles yea yea yea! these guys are on my list at #2

  • Great song but not so good live - due to the primative equipment

  • yea your right. but they still rock!

  • Golly. They took a bow at the end just like the Beatles would do.

Who borrowed that gesture from who?

  • and i think that was a dubbing deffect!

  • His first name was Chris, not Chad

  • Nice melody song but Chad Curtis the drummer of The Searchers is off key big time at 1:03

    mark.

  • Chris Curtis, the leader and the brains behind the band was not off key. That is his distinctive voice that made the 3 part harmony interesting. He was the star of the band. Do a google search and read up. He was a beautiful human being, as well. Sadly, he passed away. RIP, Chris.

  • They were trying very hard to recreate the sound of the double tracked single version of this song. Hence the overreaching harmonies.

  • throw it in the bin, and pretend it didn't happen!

  • I suspect that the person running the audio board should take some of the blame for this, it sounds like the back up harmonist is grossly overmiked while the second lead is undermiked.

  • Well, it's what is called a "board mix". The sound man was mixing the levels for the arena, and not to be recorded. For posterity's sake (probably) the output of that mix was recorded. Board mixes almost never sound good.

  • It's too bad one of the guys on high harmony was seriously off-pitch here ... because this is a great, great song. By the way, while I agree McCartney is a melodic genius in this field, he did NOT write this song!

  • Has a beautiful melody and lyrics that edify and counsel good sense.

  • it's too bad the tape is so old that the sound is warped - it's an alright song though

  • Mike Pender lead guitar and vocals, Tony Jackson Bass, vocals, Mike McNally rhythm guitar vocals, Chris Curtis drums vocals

  • John McNally!

  • Great song, but the idiot singing falsetto on the drums sounds much better on the released version.

  • Sorry but this one should have been left in the archive -

  • if they really did well, they would have bought more than one mic; rather than sticking thier heads together like that!!..just kidding :))

  • Awesome band.

  • just been to see the Searchers and they were brilliant and Spencer James is an ace singer Aaron, you must be so proud of him.

  • my father is spencer james the lead singer

not kidding im aaron james his son but didnt expect him on youtube

  • What were the names of the members?

  • rock n roll hall of famers

  • hi isle of sky tony jackson is the guy singing lead with mike pender .just wish chris hadnt sung so out of tune on this one pauls mom

  • Thanks for your reply M8!

Sorry it took 2 years for me to respond but hey! Rome wasn't buikt in a day:)

  • ...please don´t luv

  • This song was written by Billy Jackson and Jim Wisner, not McCartney.

  • Elvis satarted Rock 'n' Roll.

  • Little Richard before El..........ah, so many started so much. Gene Vincent, El, Richard, Berry, etc, etc. etc.

  • In the video which one is the late Tony please.I know where Chris Curtis (R.I.P.) IS.

  • Supreme irony!!!..A couple of people are saying the great Searchers were better than The ALMIGHTY FOREVER BEATLES!!!!!...Paul McCartney even wrote this Song!!...lol

  • Yes, pity they ran out of ideas. Or perhaps that they just didn't have writing abilities?

  • well they obviously do have writing abilities if they wrote a song like this.

  • Unnfortunately they didn't. Or any of their hits. At that time almost the only UK band writing were The Beatles and they also did many songs by others then.

  • This song is just so cool, so melodic and spare. Just leaves you wanting more. Love it.

  • great to see the original line up such a shamechrisjoined in singing with mike and tony . saw searchers last year still the best . r i p chris tony pauls mom

  • Wow, what a blast from the past. I actually have the re-release of their album, and I thought they were great back in those days.

  • Who did "Yesterday's Gone" from the same era??? Also a great song.

  • Chad & Jeremy

  • Yes, and I found out that "The Overlanders" hit the radio a little before C/J and that's the one I bought (and still have) from so long ago. Thanks!

  • Hey BVF, Can you find (if it exists) a video for a Chad & Jeremy song called "Paxton Quigley's Had The Course"? It's from 1969 and was part of a movie soundtrack. I don't know the name of the movie, but I figured the movie might have been a reason for a video.

  • Pretty sure one doesn't exist for that.

  • cupid's inspiration
