it doesn't even make sense to compare the beatles and elliot smith---that would be like comparing van gogh and michelangelo, they were doing completely different things and making completely different statements; the purpose of elliot smith's music is different than the purpose of the beatles' music. it can't really be reasonable argued that one is better than the other because there's no constant factor and it's all left up to opinion.
