The girl's got talent. I am not a huge fan of Beyonce, but this has made me think twice. She did a wonderful job with this difficult, emotional song. And it seemed effortless. She really gave it all the grace it deserved. I know how critical Barbra must be, and even she seemed pleased - as if she, too, had gained new respect for Beyonce. We know those 66 people do not have functioning memories.
It's been so long since I've heard Beyonce actually sing. Anymore all of her performances are either lip-synched or just her screaming into a mic with no particular regard for pitch. She really is very talented, she just needs to learn to sing properly like this all the time.
Are you people really comparing Katy Perry to Beyonce? Really? By the way, Beyonce recent sale records might be low, but no one stays on top forever, it is amazing enough the woman did not flop with six consecutive albums. But the thing they have in common is they both became popular because of their looks. Whereas Beyonce is marginally better than Perry vocally, Perry is far better in the looks department.
From the way she is nodding her head, it looks like Barbra is enjoying Beyonce's lovely rendition of this song. If you watch Barbra's reaction to Idina Menzel's version of "Don' t Rain in My Parade," she doesn't look nearly as happy.

I love how Barbra is nodding her approval of Beyonce. Her interpretation of this song hits all the right notes for a tribute to the great Ms. Streisand. My daughter has all of Beyonce's music, and she is an incredibly talented young lady. And, what lovely manners for Beyonce to tell Barbara it was an honor to sing for her. Brava!
No one can do this song like Barbra. However, for a cover/tribute version Beyonce did a good job. She is a great singer/performer but Barbra is a legend and this is HER song. A good version but not the original.
Saying that Beyonce is not a good singer is not entirely true, in fact she's among the top, however this style, doesn't suit her voice that's why. She's more of a hiphop vocalist.

She is not terrible but not good, either. She is just not a great singer. You take away her looks and just listen to her and she is very average. And if you take away her microphone, I doubt the audience would be able to hear her at all. She is better than Britney Spears, though, for what that is worth.
@trha2222 That's not necessarily true. Out of all the "pop" singers, she has the best technique. The resonance, vibrato, and musicianship is there. Of course she sings with microphone technique, she is not an opera singer. Her tone is more pleasant than someone like, Christina Aguilera (who may have the pipes, but no technique to sustain it).

@trha2222 I think you have to be deaf or seVEREly biased to be able to hear that Beyonce has better vocals than yeah Adele or Gaga, who are both great singers. Her range, high AND very low, is impressive. Her vibrato is smooth, but most importantly she is able to easily change the speed of her vibrato, something Whitney used to do a lot. She does amazing on soft delicate songs. Just as well on songs with belting notes, raspiness, growls. Where Adele and Gaga sometimes sound a little weaker.

@RanjitMorey Most music teachers would probably tell you "yes she does". Beyonce has a deeper voice than both Gaga and Adele, meaning her vocal chords are thicker. If someone has thicker vocal chords they have to push more air through their lungs to hit the same key as someone with thinner vocal chords. Not only that but Beyonce often sings louder. If powerful means pushing more air through the vocal chords, having a louder bass resonance, then yes Beyonce does have more power in her belts.

Technique is the style that they use. Range of voice is obvious. Quality of singing to me is all of those things combined.

@trha2222 If that wasn't enough, her voice at times mimics a true musical instrument. Guitars, violins, pianos often don't stick to a perfect pure note. Why? Because it's plain and boring. They dance around the note, embellish it, decorate it. They do "runs". Beyonce's runs are closer to a true instrument like a guitar, violin, piano than say Gaga or Adele.

Of course she sings with microphone technique, she is not an opera singer. Her tone is more pleasant than someone like, Christina Aguilera (who may have the pipes, but no technique to sustain it).

Her range, high AND very low, is impressive. Her vibrato is smooth, but most importantly she is able to easily change the speed of her vibrato, something Whitney used to do a lot. She does amazing on soft delicate songs. Just as well on songs with belting notes, raspiness, growls. Where Adele and Gaga sometimes sound a little weaker.

@RanjitMorey Most music teachers would probably tell you "yes she does". Beyonce has a deeper voice than both Gaga and Adele, meaning her vocal chords are thicker. If someone has thicker vocal chords they have to push more air through their lungs to hit the same key as someone with thinner vocal chords. Not only that but Beyonce often sings louder. If powerful means pushing more air through the vocal chords, having a louder bass resonance, then yes Beyonce does have more power in her belts.

@trha2222 It's not about whether you like them or not. It's just a technical point. Fantasia and Hudson can blow. They push a lot more air through their vocal chords than Beyonce does. They also sound like they have thicker vocal chords. Those two things combined mean a more powerful sound comes out of our their throat.
You may not like their style or technique, but I don't know how you can say they don't have power in terms of sound loudness, bass resonance, and even vibrato control.

Technique is the style that they use. Range of voice is obvious. Quality of singing to me is all of those things combined.

@trha2222 If that wasn't enough, her voice at times mimics a true musical instrument. Guitars, violins, pianos often don't stick to a perfect pure note. Why? Because it's plain and boring. They dance around the note, embellish it, decorate it. They do "runs". Beyonce's runs are closer to a true instrument like a guitar, violin, piano than say Gaga or Adele.
Probably from having a church background. I dunno, but it does take more vocal talent than just singing a flat plain note.

@trha2222 Again, I didn't say Beyonce was the greatest singer. I said she has better vocal skills than Adele and Gaga. Of course there are better singers all over world, in churches, music schools, etc.
But Beyonce does have a few vocal skills over Adele and Gaga. Runs the way an instruments do runs, variable speed vibrato, very quick vocal chord reflexes, and fuller bass notes while belting, better breath control, plus more.
Don't know how nice she is as a person but she is a better singer.

I'm not a huge Beyonce fan, but they could not have picked a better performer for this honor. She kept the integrity of the song and executed it with class. Thumbs up Beyonce for not making the mistake of "over singing" or "over running" a classic ballad.
