ok yes there was no way to prevent this freak accident however if you have a blue lens for your dome light during thick fog it will help see the white line. not a solution just a suggestion

the thing is, some will slow down in hopes everyone does...some stay the speed limit in similar hopes. everyone is then going different speeds then crashes happen. even stopping will not help. there is no routine drill to do for this is very rare...

R.I.P to those that passed. However, the sad truth is, people in Florida cannot drive well. All the tailgating, cutting people off. There is not one day that goes by that I don't see somebody pulled over or in an accident.

This is an example of driving too fast for the conditions. Just because the speed limit is set at 70mph for that area doesn't mean you can go 70 in adverse conditions like this. You can get a speeding ticket for driving too fast for the conditions even if you're driving below the posted speed limit.

I noticed while in Florida that the standard of driving is terrible over there. Any lane will do and people just randomly travel from the left lane across the middle lane then across the right lane to get to there exits, RIDICULOUS. Dont even start me on getting cut up by others.

Um, nope. This was a sudden fog, and dense to the point where you literally couldn't see your own hand in front of your face (verbatum what one of the responding officers said). It's an Interstate, people will drive fast, however, if you can't see 10 inches in front of your face, slowing down to 30 isn't going to do much for you. I lived in Orlando when this happened, and it seemed pretty unavoidable. Also, most drivers know that occasionally fog can suddenly blind you, it happens.

I live right by the water tower and radio tower that is in one of the pictures. I can put it to rest that the fog was so heavy that you could not see 5 feet in front of you. Surprisingly, it was even worse the next day. I had to lean out the window of my Ford Ranger to navigate by the yellow line in the middle of the road. Couldn't even see over the hood. Fortunately, FHP and PCSO had I-4 shut down and there were no accidents. Oddly, from seeing it first hand, the smoke didn't cause the fog.

The United States really needs to mandate for new market vehicles, as is done in EU for that market - for all vehicle and trailer categories, the requirement of FOG TAIL-LAMPS (rear fog lamps). (SAE J1319).

The rear fog light is 'primary defence' the world has against crash occurrence under such lousy visibility conditions.

Tuition and driver behaviour is of course a state and police matter.
