my mom has the same mower, great engines i'd say don't take much to completely disassemble. i had my gc160 horizontal motor for around 4 years with no problems since i rebuild it. found it in a ditch with an valve gummed up stuck open. only thing my mom's mower had problems with was the carb needed clean out once in a great while, and once the muffler was pluged with alot of carbon the engine couldn't breathe. later thought that mom was just opperating it a bit on choke
wow nice mower! you got very lucky! i really wish i had a honda and i've never used one but they look awesome. i got lucky when i pulled my grandma's old 80's toro recycler out of her garage after it sat in there for 20 some years. it needed a new air filter, an oil change, and a serious cleaning. but even before i replaced them i decided to see if it even worked and it started on the 2nd pull!! all it needed was gas and fortunately the tank was clean and dry. it runs like new now and i love it!
Nice! First pull. I have 3 honda mowers. One is 26 years old now and still mowing 1/2 acre a week! Starting to blow blue a bit buy hey, still works just as good with that many hours... everything has a life span!

I never had a problem with 4-stroke in tall grass. And I mean REALLY tall grass. I never had a lawn mower with a 2-stroke, so I don't have anything to compare it to though.
You need to use a Honda, trust me you will never buy any other mower! I have mowed really tall grass with 2-strokes and 4-strokes, taller than the grass in this video and the 4-stroke is always one that has no problems, the 2-strokes just can't cope as well.
Victa engines are not any good. My dad has a 22 year old Briggs & Stratton 4-stroke that has NEVER had any problems and runs like new. You cannot compare a Briggs & Stratton to a Honda GXV Series engine; they are commercial quality and go on forever. I completely disagree with you saying that 4-Strokes bog down in long grass, which is completely wrong! 2-stroke engines do not have anywhere near as much torque as a 4-stroke engine.
What you want in a mower engine is a lot of torque, hp matters but its torque that you want. My Honda didn't even slow down in the really heavy grass where as a 2-stroke would have. I have used Victa 2-stroke mowers before and I am not impressed with them, the mowers are not built well, they take forever to start and the engines do not last as long as 4-stroke engines do and they are way louder.

my neigbor threw away a brand new craftsman push with a 6 horse briggs because when ever he mowed it would stall-he forgot to put the side attachment on ! i got a bag and side attachment with it works great
My uncle found a 2002 Craftsman Self Propelled mower, 5.5hp Honda engine, and it even has the Blade Brake system (which I love) in the garbage. Took it home, and after 20 pulls the mower smoked like crazy for a minute then ran fine. The only things missing are the side mulch cover and the rear mulch plug. Came with a Bag and a discharge chute. Works great. Man, I want it, I hate my little Scotts.

Oh believe me, old gas REEKS! You definitely can tell bad gas from fresh gas by smelling it, you'll know when it happens to you, lol! It takes on a smell kind of like polyurethane, but sweeter smelling and way more offensive.

Looks like you got a major score, I paid 400 bucks for my 2003 honda harmony new. It has been a top notch mower, the twin blades really much great. I love the lightweight plastic deck, it has held up perfectly.

honda makes some of the best mowers around. my 1993 HR215 is still running and working great today and has been used every week since 93' to mow the lawn.
They are plastic, I have a 2003 harmony and I was reluctant paying 400 bucks for it new in 2003, It is light, the plastic is perfect, no cracks it flexes less than some metal mower decks. I am actually sold on the honda plastic deck, Ours has held up to heavy use perfectly. I know I know, plastic..... Believe me they are great mowers.
The plastic deck is awesome, no rust! They don't seem to crack or flex either. Beats the shit out of any steel or aluminum mower I ever had, and it's lightweight.

i wish mine worked i bought mine new last year from sears and the damn deck is plastic so right were the mount for the moter is it broke causeing extrememe vibration and thus cracking the other 2 mounts so that deck is shot i went to replace the deck an hour ago i put the engine on the deck monted it got the push bar monted and went to put the blade on THE FUCKING SHAFTS TO DAMN LONG!

I had to fiddle with my pops couple of push mowers back home ( basic maintence) - a freind of his brot his 2000 murray push over- all that was wrong was the ground tab needed a bit of bending and it fired right up.
I have a 6HP briggs off one push mower, and a 5HP honda engine i still want to see run.

You dont smell gas to see if its fresh. Old or new it still has the stinky smell!!!! Take a pump and pump it into a jar.
