  • So....Jerry never really left THE IMPRESSIONS... because they're BACKING him on THIS song !!!

  • Driving his 1964 Lincoln in 1969.....What's the point?..This awsome song came out in 1963.

I guess this brother was trippin

  • this was 1 of my mothers favorite songs iv'e known this song from a lil girl the words and all RESTIN PEACE MOM FRANCES ELIZABETH MERKISON LOVE YOUR BABY GIRL CHETTA

  • AS A WOMAN I FEEL THE EXACT SAME WAY....I NEED TO BELONG TO SOMEONE.

  • @JudyGale1 Many women say this until someone claims them - then all of a sudden they want to belong to someone else

  • Oh my goodness, this song blows my mind. The love of my life always makes me want to make sure that he understands I am that "sweet girl" I love you MAN!!!! My lion King!!!

  • The Ice Man Cometh,

The year was 1969, I was driving a White 1964 Lincoln Continental with suicide doors (I know I was Kool) I pulled up to the front of Seaway Nat'l bank In Chicago Lake Meadows, But then... Jerry Butler and Curtis Mayfield Pulls up a 1969 Lincoln Mark V , It was Grey with a 1/2 Black Landau top, and sun roof , All of a sudden I didn't feel so kool... I moved my Lil funky car and did not go into the bank untill they left , "The Ice Man Cometh"

  • @chess1458

My pleasure Chess (No pun intended)

  • @chess1458 looking back ,Glad to share

  • @chess1458 looking back ,Glad to share

  • Wow what a magical voice,thank you

  • This song blows my mind. Makes me believe in love again. Yes this song tells when a man does want a woman's heart! Melted my soul!!!

  • pure soul and harmony with the impression in background.

  • FANTASTIC!

LOVE THE VERSE OF THIS SONG!

I NEED TO BELONG TO SOME-ONE!

  • Interestingly, JERRY BUTLER was THE ORIGINAL lead singer of The Impressions. At that time, Curtis Mayfield was there, but sang background (and played guitar) ,with the group. This song was recorded with The Impressions AFTER Jerry went solo.

  • The ice man at his best. I really love this song!!!

  • This always makes me cry.

  • wow I just heard this I love it, the times when men expressed the truth about their feelings about a woman and love and life and kids and GOD are almost obsolete why can someonne tell my why?

  • Curtis Mayfield and Smokey Robinson are the greatest black songwriters. This is just one example of the do-it-all Mayfield, who wrote, produced, sang and played on most of Jerry Butler, Gene Chandler, Major Lance, Walter Jackson and the Impressions songs from this period. Chi-Town in the house!

  • @MrDwb721 Glad You Enjoy It Bro!!!!!

  • @chess1458 i just love it when the history of these masters is revealed to teach the young who are not aware

    Thanks

  • @MrDwb721 I hear you! Nothing like those Gentlemen today - far as I can see. Boys from the projects who held their own and surpassed greatness to become Legendary!! Can't get enough.

  • @MrDwb721 So true. His floating, wobbling guitar work was a strong influence on Jimi Hendrix, both on his ballads and rhythm guitar playing. As an owner producer, CM was also going where JMH was going: Owning and controlling his cultural productions. Hendrix also invested in his own state of the art studio, and started his own production company as a springboard to project his own music and own himself. CM was a leader who created space for others. His melodic intuition is uncanny.

  • @MrDwb721 Yes You Are 100% Right On That Comment.

  • @MrDwb721 Sam Cook did that also.

  • Who does that KILLER Guitar?

  • @jolvare

On the Guitar is the Great Curtis Mayfield who played the guitar different than most. If you listen to the Chicago Soul of that period, you would get the same killer chops in those songs and it is Curtis Mayfield, who doesnt get enough credit for what he did which is bring soul to the masses.

  • @MrDwb721

Thanks for the info....I LOVE Curtis Mayfield's work...when he was with the Impressions (when he was alive, of course) I bought every single record they made!

  • thi sssss s isssss the one...slow dancing two step swing..in the student union at PSC...summer 67...<:) with florence...

  • To everyone who likes good quality music, this song was sampled/rehashed in a song called "Up All Night" by a canadian hip hop artist called Classified.... and no its not that "yo yo pop a cap" hip hop. It's amazing how an amazing classic like this can inspire people of today, and take music back to its roots. Peace and Love from Minneapolis.

  • @Loc2LocBeatz

That is a good sample on that track. Just listened to it.

  • Great song. Thanks for posting it.

  • This song is so deep and meaningful. It's hard for me to put into words but here they are.

  • I have no words to express how this song makes me feel. This is how a man tells a woman that he wants her! "I wanna belong to somebody just like you"...my, my!!

  • the name of this song is "Need To Belong." Beautiful and soulful, think he was still a teenager when he recorded this. My favorite Jerry Butler song.

  • This is a classic.

  • he just had concert in Il, on 10/3/10 it was pretty good. got to meet him back stage...

  • I was 11.. when this song was out ...watching(sneakin) my older Bros/sis and their friends dancing in the basement to this...sooo awesome..Jerry is still the man !!!

  • @chess1458 i love his every effort,- his is the best moon river- but this one suits his phrasing, earnest sentiment and mellifluous voice. he is not so much singing as praying. perhaps that accounts for its broad appeal. thanks again.

  • This is one of the songs of my youth, real smooth. Well done Jerry. Thanx for the memories chess1458

  • Educated. Thanks for that post.

    Brilliant voice, brilliant track.

I only knew his northern soul stuff. Now I see the wider picture.

  • Wow what a timeless classic being a 74 baby is tough because i got teased with all the great music of the earlier generations music and the beginning stages of real hip hop and the late great michael jackson. Now days I refuse to listen to the crap on the radio. None of them can actually sing live and the rappers have sold out to corporate greed and it makes me suffer from nausea

  • Timeless song. This is what I call real music. Thanks so much for this soulful upload!

  • This was a popular hit in the Fall of '63. I remember it was on the radio at the time of the Kennedy Assasination.

  • Can you hear how much you can do with so little? ORGAN,GUITAR,BASS AND ONLY A SNARE AND HI-HAT. Beautiful!

  • @theeMrpopeye You forgot to mention the best sounding instrument in the mix. The sweet pipes of the "ICE MAN"....they sound so cool don't you agree? This guy used to be one of the back up singers for the Impressions behind Curtis Mayfield. I would pay dearly to see him in concert anytime any where!!!

  • I was in Greenville Mississippi when this song came out. brings back memories.

  • Classified - Up All Night

  • Aye yo Ninth Wondra

  • this is good music

  • Isaac Hayes' version is great with the horns but this makes me almost wish i was born in the 50s, if it wasn't for the racism.

  • I'm Glad You Enjoy It,Thanks 4 The Comment

  • @TBullets85 1950's racism vs. 21st century racism. *****Such a nice picture of young Jerry Butler

  • I see what you mean. I am a 59 year old Black woman and let me tell you, we still had fun and this music gave us a common language. The kids were getting together behind the music. That is why rock and roll was considered the devil's music that and, Oh yes, the SEX LOL!

  • It was A-6 on the juke box at Williams Diner in Scotlandville Louisiana (north Baton Rouge now).

  • I Must Say Matt,You Have One Hell Of A Good Memory.

  • matthewmckines...Great memory. I was a senior at Capitol High (soon to enter Southern Univ) and remember this as one of the Great Songs of that era.
