Your corn is looking great! I planted 3 rows of corn each row within 3 weeks from the next. And so far so good.. I am noticing though the rows that were planted the latest have not got very tall at all but are still producing small corns.. I'm thinking maybe the heat got to them..
@dwc99cyf Thanks for the info. I'm not sure if that is what got mine, but driving around my area I have seen a few other gardens where their squash plants looked just like mine. So I guess it isn't just me around here :)
@dwc99cyf I don't have many secrets or things I recommend doing, but good soil is pretty important. Each year I add manure or compost and also miracle grow fertilizer and it really seems to help. So if you can add something to old soil it should make a difference.
@dwc99cyf It is only my 3rd year and I'm still learning tons. Not everything I have grows according to plan :). Sometimes 2 identical pepper plants will grow competely different even in the same area. Go figure.
great looking corn! my squash did the same thing and i remember tell the wife "hey i see some mushrooms" wtih the squash, so..... how often and how much you watering the corn? keep up the good work!
@shanewald All my plants get watered about the same since I have the drip irrigation in. Some people may say you need to water certain plants differently, but it has worked for me. Right now in the heat of summer I water every other day for about 50mins. I use drip line that has omitters every 6 inches and drips at 1/2gallon an hour.
What about roasting tomatoes? Just cut them in half, put a little salt and pepper and oil and roast or boil. It changes the flavor and I think they are mighty tasty.
Also, my corn is 3 ft tall and it already has bloomed at the top and on the body of the corn. What did I do wrong? Mine have been growing longer probably 70 days??? I live in lower Georgia. Down by Savannah.
@dwc99cyf Hmmm. Not sure there. This is my first experience growing corn. I just planted it and it has grown without any attention. I added fertilizer to the soil before I planted. Not sure what type of soil you have.
Jason the same thing happened to my squash and there was no sign of bugs. I looked every where. They just gave out. I think part of it was the heat. I cant figure it out. What do you think?
@dwc99cyf Yeah it has to be some type of disease. I just googled "zucchini plant disease" and the first website that came up has info on a few different diseases they can get so that must be it. Next year maybe I'll stay ahead of it :).
Lush garden, Jason. Loaded with good stuff. Your corn is really doing well. Have a pot of boiling water ready before you pick your first ears. Pick, peel and throw them in the pot... Best tasting corn you'll ever eat. I'm starting to drool now...
Everything is looking good as always. For the jalapenos, i wait for them to start getting cracked and leathery on purpose. That's when the heat is at its highest point.
Well Jason, I think you've touched on some of the issues ~ thinning and air circulation. But, it has to be difficult planting up against a fence since air/breeZe and sun can't get in from that side.
Your squash bed doesn't look like bugs to me, more like some type of ground contamination - fungus/bacteria or lockout. I'm hoping for lockout!
That corn is spectacular! If you can squeeze in a second crop (which seems highly likely) maybe it would be worth trying a 'popping' corn? My corn is a disaster so I'm going to video it and give you all a good laugh.
What to grow? What expensive ingredients do you use in Winter?
@baconsoda Thanks Brendan. The corn I grew said on the seed packet said from plant to harvest is 60 days. It is a shorter length growing variety so I should be able to get more in since it is warm here till mid october. I'll probably be putting it in tomorrow so I don't miss any more days. Some of the popping corn varieties I have seen take a little long, but I will check when I go to the store. Not sure what else I would use during the winter. I'll see what else they have too.
hey Jason, your garden is looking good. my cucumber plants always starts dying out about half way through the season. and your corn is beautiful. i have 5 or 6 corn plants but there only knee high. I'm in the eastern part of Michigan. and the squirrels ruined them to. that also sucks about your squash and zucchini. i actually had bugs eat through the stem of my zucchini plant.
@copperhead228 Yeah each year I have grown the squash, tomatoes, and cucumbers seem to die out first. Peppers pretty much grow without problem. The corn is crazy. Must love the heat. Thanks for watching.
