I told my mother all about the garbage that is in commercial dog food. Today when she took her new puppy to the vet she asked if Beneful was a good food & he said it was fine & not to believe the hype. He said, chicken beaks & animal-by-products are actually nutritious & healthy to feed to dogs. I told her to fire her vet. She told me, "he is a very educated man", and told her he has been to dog food factories to see how the food is made. I feel bad for her new puppy!

Raw meat and bones [S.A.R.F.=species appropriate raw food diet] are what they would eat naturally in the wild..NOT the meat from your local supermarket of course, but from a local organic farmer [grass fed beef] or you may hunt for food, [venison, etc] then you are more likely to get FRESH meat minus all the chemicals, steroids, antibiotics and disease. There are also places like Blackwing to get grass fed beef, bison, etc, online.

No man made food is in the best interest of your animal (pet), only you are. The best way to feed you cat/dog is raw chicken, duck, beef, pork higher quality portions. Dogs/cats are (for the most part) carnivors, and without us they would revert back to hunting and eating raw meat. So, put into your own hands go the the super market and buy your pet what you can afford in poultry or meat. that is the only way you can 100% know what is going into your pet. They will live longer :)

when they cook the stuff, i'm pretty sure it's at a high enough temperature to kill the viruses and bacteria. they do the same thing when they can human food. it's called pasteurization. screw this guy, though his story is disgusting. my dad's german shepard ate wal-mart dog food when he wasn't fed table scraps and lived well over 10 years with only heart worm medicine. he had arthritis before he died of old age. this vet obviously wants to promote his field and books!!

@matwocents Actually , dogs are generally supposed to live up 28 years. and the euthinasia in the shleter animals doesnt break down in the "processing" so it is still in the food. Its causes very slow shortening of life span just like dohnuts and burgers does ours. Better quality food equals longevity. Just FYI :)

NO you dont go to your vet because VETS prescribe the foods that they get a DEAL on! IF YOU LOOK at your VETS food ingredients you will almost ALWAYS find "by products" AND/OR Animal fat. Very true. The vet tried to push her "Science Diet" garbage on me and I looked at the ingredients on her promo brochure, 1st ingredient: CORN! I laughed at her . She was also trying to tell me that feeding my Presa-Canario Raw bones and meat could cause illness. But it's funny that when i eliminated any trace of corn from his diet, his skin, and coat became vibrant and healthy, as did his overall persona.(or is that 'dog-ona'? lol.)

Dogs and Cats are by nature CARNIVORES, they are meant to eat meat, the best diet for dogs and cats is RAW.. yes... raw meat, organs, and bone. no chicken bones to adults, no chicken or pork bones to puppies

no fried food

no spices or sugar(except for fruits)

don't forget to add salt to his food and have water readily available.

give your puppy vitamins.

that's it. post it on your fridge door and you'll be fine. ask your vet if there's anything he'd like to add to the list

A lot of people will speak highly of these holistic foods, yet they fail to see that truly it doesn't make much of a difference whether you give this food or simply Pro Plan or Eukanuba. Meat by products are not bad if protein levels and fat levels are maintained. Dogs are not carnivores, they are omnivores, so wheat, barley and other grains are good for them. Holistics foods might be good, but there isn't anything bad with foods that are not organic/holistic....

And they can live off these "unnatural" food sources. But my point is that whether it's Eukanuba, Pro Plan, Royal Canin, or gold-in-a-bag, all of those help your dog live healthy lives. The real problem is exercise, treats and human contact.

The FDA regulates dog food in the same way it regulates human food. The same can be said by Association of American Feed Control Officials. Even if you feed your pets fresh beef cutlets from the supermarket, the cattle slaughtered grew up on cattle feed, which was enriched with either protein meal or tallow, both of which are meat by-products from rendering plants. For example, fresh cutlets of beef may contain trace amounts of pentobarbitial because the cattle ate feed enriched with meat by-products from rendering plants. You can't fully avoid them.

I am from the midwest and grew up on a small farm and we did not use commercial feeds or pesticides. It's simple economics. What is the cost of meat by-product meal compared with that of, say, basic ground beef shoulder (hamburger)? If hamburger costs $2 per pound, and this by-product meal costs ten cents per pound, this means that companies are making the best of what cannot be used for human consumption--and making a few bucks doing it.  Goes to show that in America, absolutely nothing is put to waste if money can be made. Every bit of a slaughtered animal is put to use somehow.

I highky doubt you can get tuberculosis from a lung. It is not transferable from a dead animals lung as far as I know. I am alomost positive of this! this guy sounds wrong to me. I started making my own dog food. I have always had dogs, and as a child do not remember so many dogs with so many 'problems'. My two large dogs both developed 'fatty tumors' and my largest girl now has cushing's diseas. I bought the most expensive dog food I could find, but they both still developed problems. So now, I buy my meat at the grocery store, the stuff on special, cook it with brown rice and add peas & carrots. I will never buy commercial food again.

Intestines 4 example go mostly in2 pet food as humans do not like them as much as other parts of the animal. Great information - I just wish more people knew about what was in their pets food. I've worked at a pet store for 2 years and most people never read the label or they just buy what their non-holistic vet tells them to buy (i.e. Science Diet, Eukanuba, or Purina Pro Plan), so therefore it must be good. And though those brands are going to be a bit better than those that contain the meat and bone meals/by products, they are still filled with all kinds of junk and fillers. Thank you!

Remember chicken feet and heads and intestines are natural and can be in an all natural pet food. Holistic pet dog and cat foods should not be fed to our pets that have allergies and skin issues and sensitivities. Why expose your cat or dog to a large array of ingredients when a venison and rice, (human grade ingredients) for example, will suffice and will be more hypoallergenic in nature.

Good advice, but chicken or lamb meal for example is human grade with the 67% water and most of the fat removed before adding it to the kibble recipe. All ingredients are listed in pre-cooked weight. So if chicken meal is the first ingredient listed when the kibble is reduced to 10% moisture it remains the #1 ingredient. If chicken in listed first all the water weight is lost and now by weight it is about #5 on the list , but it will not read as that.
