  • Jay, did you suggest that we ingest heroin or other like drugs into our blood stream?

  • @genericsoul Hey whatever helps you get thru the day I guess.

  • @dighsx let me be clear: you suggested we all shoot up near the end of your video =)

i took it out of context on purpose because it made me giggle.

  • man, i really liked this contest idea...timing was just off for me, ill continue fighting the good fight and hopefully make 2012 better in some way

  • @nadam35 You have a natural way of doing good man. I have no doubt you'll continue that into 2012 and beyond.

I hope all is well by you,

    Jay

  • not that i subscribe to this theory by any means... but perhaps a philosophy of some people is this: you mentioned dropping a pebble in a pond and making rippes.. perhaps some people are affraid that if too many pebbles are dropped the waves will get so big they will drown. Poor swimmers i suppose. ;)

  • @TheTsukimaster I'd rather drowned in a sea of good then a sea of shit. And it seems we got plenty of shit now-a-days.

    All the best,

    Jay

  • hey man. I may not enter. but we will talk later.

  • Wo! This has really inspired me. Thanks, I think if this vid was bigger than you could make a big difference, this should be something that you do every so often. This could be a monthly thing, where you talk about something you did that was good, and people comment what they did. I hope you read this cause I think this would be a great idea, and it would make everyone feel really good about themselves and overall, the world. Also people could send in vids if they filmed it :D

  • @thinsulite I think it's important that we all beat the drum for doing good from time to time. Just so we all remember how important it is and so it becomes habit and a solid part of our lives.

    All the best,

    Jay

  • Have you heard MLK Jr. sermon, "The Drum Major Instinct"? If not, you may like it, given your interest here.

  • @OTooleRules I'll have to look that up. Thanks for the heads up.

  • Me and my friend have been helping out at the local scout troop every Friday for the past 2 years, and we go camping with them ect. If there isn't enough leaders so they camp continue the evening ect. would that qualify for the competition?

  • @SkylonRow Yep that counts in my book and is a great thing you're doing.

    Taker easy,

    Jay

  • good video jay... just so you know .. i do plan on entering... i jus have to find a time to do it this week... thanks for the motivation.. and i promise i will TRY to do a little more good!

  • @kirkkeener32 Cool man. I look forward to your entry.

  • 5 - Although no longer a pipe smoker, I will still drop by occasionaly to see whats happening. All I do mostly these days is sleep. We know the worst, and lets just say I will never see 80! But, do I regret anything? (as one of your videos said). NO. I can't turn back the clock. I am responsible for the state I am in today, and yes, I feel guilty regarding putting my family under stress they don't need. I wish you all well, and "God speed". Frank.

  • @NoFancyPipeName Sorry to hear about your health stuff. I hope you are wrong and things turn out better then expected. But I know you as a realist too. And the points as always are right on the mark. Thanks for the great comments.

    All the best,

    Jay

  • 4 - I said it would be "pipe related" and a surprise that he might like or could make use of. When I was allowed home and fit enough to go into my shed, I took all my pipes, reamed them all, polished the stems and got them nice looking. I carefully packed all the pipes, tobacco and related items into a huge box and sent that to him with a note.

I feel guilty now, as smoking a pipe put me in this health condition today - and I now feel responsible for HIS health. Regards. Frank

  • 3 - As for my "do good", I gave away all my pipes (48 of them), my tobacco, my pipe books and all my pipe related items to a young guy I saw smoking a pipe before Christmas. I say young, he was about 30. We were outside the hospital and sat opn a bench. HE said "mind if I smoke" and I said no. He produced a pipe! We got "chatting" (as best I could), and that was it. I had to give them up, and he was just into his 2nd year of smoking a pipe. So, I asked for his address to send "something"

  • 2 - so people that "want" or "like the idea" of doing good, are prevented by other peoples expectations of them. You seriously can't go round just once to an elderly neighbour that you've never spoken to before and shoot the breeze, or bring a meal etc - and only do it once. It takes a strong, determined person to want to carry it on for the rest of their life.

  • I'm back for a short while. I like oldpipepops, have had yet another operation and have had to quit pipe smoking for good. I can barely talk or eat now, let alone smoke. Anyway - people fear doing good because although it is ok to think of doing something "once" - they then think "oh shit, will I be expected to do this now all the time?". ie - help a neighbour or go round and chat etc. If you never done it before, they'll wonder why now, and then you'll feel pressurised into keeping it up.

  • Seriously!?!!? Your not my real Mom! Stop telling me what to do!

  • @mollophant The act, which went into effect July 1, 2006, requires retailers that sell rechargeable batteries to take-back and recycle them. Modeled after the same take-back concept of the cell phone bill, this legislation creates convenience and incentive for consumers.

  • I see what you're saying... Nowadays if you do someone good, they get suspicious that you want to harm them or that you have another real reason to do it.

Being selfish is so natural that doing something else has become completely crazy.

  • @bluepipesmoker Yep we've become to self centered. Time to break that cycle.

  • That settles it. Dan wins. Next topic.

  • Great topic. Unfortunately, a lot of people meet a person doing good with suspicion. Sometimes, a good deed not only goes unnoticed, it is purposely ignored.

  • @drumspipes Yep it's sad but true. But all the said to me it's still worth trying. Not because others told me it is but just because I feel inside me it is.

    Taker easy,

    Jay

  • I rekon most people do good out of second nature, and dont expect to be merited for it since back in the day, parents would tell us

"you go do that good deed and keep your trap shut about it! no one likes a bragger" thats just how I feel. heres a list of "good" things that I do on a dily basis, and dont even think about it. I just dont feel the need to brag about it, and for that matter even be recognized for it. sorry Jay.

  • @dieseldragontamer Well you might be right. But I fear there are a lot of people who watch the tv and look at the world and figure whats the point it's every man for themselves. Maybe the people that are doing good all the time should talk about it from time to time to inspire others.

    All the best,

    Jay

  • Oh my!! what a long video just to rant because people are not participating in you contest!! relax!!! we still watch your videos!! ha ha ha!!!

  • @hjrosasq The act, which went into effect July 1, 2006, requires retailers that sell rechargeable batteries to take-back and recycle them. Modeled after the same take-back concept of the cell phone bill, this legislation creates convenience and incentive for consumers.

  • I really like your videos...great stuff!!! I don't really like talking about things that I do, that's why I haven't entered, cause really, I wonder if I'm doing "good" but I hope what I'm doing everyday is "good". I will often give my clients extra prints from their portrait session when I know they don't have the money to get what they wanted. Also, teaching grade school boys at church how to make pine wood Derby cars and model rockets. I feel called to do that.

  • @grizphoto Sounds to me like you're doing a lot of good.

  • just one question jay do you have to be a presenter or is leaving a comment enough?

  • Jay, Request you do a video on what you look for in a pipe when buying a pipe as well as what your favorite pipe you have so far. :)

Oh oh, I have an Idea have a "Doing Evil Contest" ROFL :)

  • @skrullion hahaha

  • Well Jay... I think you are a fine human being and a great person. But... In my opinion you expect too much much of your fellow human. If this was 1950, I could imagine you would see hundreds of entries into your contest. These days however people (including me sometimes) feel betrayed, by their gov, the banks, heck even by friends and family. You don't see many good things being done for people. In turn some people don't feel like doing good to others. But there are good doers out there.

  • @1fatbastard I hope you're wrong but fear you're right.

    Taker easy,

    Jay

  • Jay, could it be the pipe community and people in general do good everyday and recognition and reward are not the motivation for doing so? Money is DEFINiTELY not my motivator. Knowing the recipient appreciates what has been done for them is the richest reward anyone could ask for. Hope you don't take this commentary wrong. It's very thought provoking and insightful. I always look forward to your videos and discussion you inspire. Thanks a million and good luck with your contest!

  • @ImPaPaRod I didn't take your comment wrong in the least. You bring up some good points.

    All the best,

    Jay

  • we bought a lady a bus ticket to get back home it was one of my wifes clientsthat we really did not even know that good but she was have some boyfriend troubles and needed to get back home to her family in texas.

  • @jtlaw1 Thats really cool man.

I hope all is well by you,

    Jay

  • Jay, your videos always hit me in here *thumps where is heart is* It's videos like this and all you do that gave you a special place in my life. You may wonder how, and I accept that. Just know that you do.

You are so deep. So caring. Don't ever lose that.

Thanks for doing good, speaking well, and helping me know how to be better.

  • @SchmumpkinII Thanks for the kind words as always.

    All the best,

    Jay

  • i am avoiding entering as volunteering is something i regularly do and don't need ot be rewarded, but i will make a video for you anyway ;)

  • @GTFiorano Thanks man

  • Great topic Jay really made me think.-vaps

  • @XxvapsxX Thanks

  • You hit the nail on the head for me, I didnt enter because I do not want rewarded for doing good for somebody. That takes away from the act of kindness. BUT then I thought hmmm if I won I could buy one tin for me then buy four more to give to others lol.It really is about making a difference in somebodys life the little things are what really count. Hope you get more entries

  • @beans316 Yep, think of the prize as a thank you gift from me. And if can turn it into more good then all the better.

I hope all is well by you,

    Jay

  • Jay, don't take this the wrong way, but I suspect that most folks who attempt to do good as a rule just don't think about entering those acts into contests. I immediately felt this when I heard you announce this contest.

  • @Aristocob I just wonder about the people who feel there's no point in doing good or going out of their way. Maybe if they saw more people doing good or heard about it they'd be inspired to do it too. When you turn on the news you never see much good, why not try and offset that a little?

  • I've hot something in the works, I just want to do a video. Amen in the rant though.

  • @nickandhispipe Cool. I look forward to your vid

  • I would like to think that is because we don't like to toot our own horns (fingers crossed). I mean just today I paid the parking tag for the woman struggling with her children in the lot earlier but I wouldn't think of that as something worthy of winning a contest. Just my 2 cents.

  • @thvisualstenographer How about thinking of it as not so much as winning but getting a thank you from me.

    Take care,

    Jay

  • I attempted to help people when I drove truck. Picked up a couple broke down people. In the truck stop a lot of scammers knock on the truck and feed you a sob story. Only a couple were legitimate. this is still a very good contest and concept! Bread on the water, pay it forward. thanks, gregg

  • Favorited, great video.

I guess the key might be not to start thinking about what good deed to do, but instead to merely stay open to the many oportunities that show up.

    Cheers

    G.

  • @RequiemPipes Thanks G.

    All the best,

    Jay

  • Moin Jay,

i understand what you mean. Specially in my Case i try to do good every Day, for example two weeks ago i helped a Kid to repair his Bike. But for this Contest I try to do something good with Pics, or a Video. Something I can share with other, not only something I tell. I want to show it.

I want to do it next Week, what exactly......its a Surprise ;-)

    greetings from East Frisia

    Jens

  • @Psychlas I look forward to your entry.

    Take care,

    Jay

  • Jay soapboxes are the best, always keep me going, who's with me!!

  • @sushimandaddi haha yep them soap boxes are fun to stand on. hehehe

  • Amen! I'm going to try and make a video for the contest today so don't count us all out yet.

  • @metalmoraska Thanks

  • Great message Jay. Will we be able to see or hear about any of the contestants once the contest is over? it would be great to see the different things people did.

    Take Care and Happy Smoking!

  • To be a little obscure:

1Laß dein Brot über das Wasser fahren, so wirst du es finden nach langer Zeit.

Some might not want to steal their own reward by telling you, but perhaps they should think of their reward as paying it forward by blessing others into doing good also. Did that make sense?

Blessing to ya Jay while I think of some good to do. :-)

  • @ocpipeman Yep I know what you mean. But if no one ever shows how to do good how will anyone know what to do?

    Alles gute,

    Jay
