  • this would be a good informative "how to" video if you was missing a hand. Or you could just move it out of the way so people could see what you're doing....just saying.

  • I just realized that this is an "Expert village" production. I wont bother watching it now. they are all fuck wits

  • Thanks!

  • either he's a wimp or just to weak to put elbow grease behind that file.

  • well its a good thing we know its a chainsaw now....i was worried haha

  • this worked for me thank u very much

  • Didn't work for me

  • his hands are dirty... i can give you some wet ones dude i have a lot

  • you folks are harsh. don't like it, already know how to do it, don't watch it.

  • i also sharpen them without gloves. cant find in this vid what if it is so good or bad its how easy cut. but can cut any normally. theneven a proper and real way for a while in a wood.

  • "Expert" Village ... Your village called, their idiot is missing.

  • good vid bro.

  • yeah. didn't hear about square grind or circle & square grind that cuts 25%better.

  • All videos by expertvillage are poorly produced.

  • Thank You. Fred.

I was an informative video. I just sharpened my 'first' chainsaw and it cuts great. If I lived near you, I would take it there personally. From Sydney, Aust. though, it i a little far to travel...

  • he done no so bad,i prefer to put the chain bar in the vice, lock the saw chain with the auto brake,an sharpen 4 teeth at a time,

  • Sephy0 replied to my comment which i made some months ago about this video and that my comments(valid) were full of "hate". Get a grip of yourself pal. I'm just a professional who was irritated by the poor quality of instruction on said video. P.s it remains a turd that cant be polished. Hope that wasn't too "hateful" you poor sensitive soul....

  • got my first ryiobi 10 " blade pole pruner with 29cc 4 smoke troy buit. ( add an attachment type) wow! did i do damage out there! trimming my mountain bike trails in florida jungles! a few bottle necks on trail. looks like a tornado went thru!.lol and all i used to use was lame ass slow loppers..lol this shit wont grow back for years now! i cut some tree roots on trail and chian sawed thru sand! UH OH!,LOL couldnt cut cheese after that!

  • first of all... WHAT A NERD. garuntee he cant lift the damn saw, also that is a terrible deminstration, the more i see from expert village the more i laugh.

  • wat kind of echo saw is that

  • @kxdirtrider85 What do you mean "what kind of Echo saw is that?!" Didn't you hear him?

It's a "classic" chainsaw!! What a joke, just like all "Expert Village" videos. Their entire video collection should be pulled from YouTube. They're going to get people hurt

  • @billykid84 holy shit i dnt even remember commenting on this video haha

  • Respond to this video...

  • how do u sharpen a electric hedge trimmer?????????????????please help

  • The chain may never have to be sharpened if it id nice clean wood that has few to none knots

Alittle prep work goes along way when it come to sharpening your chain and it can be as easy as chopping, with an axe, dirty bark or wood to get to the nice clean wood; I know no one will do this but just alittle advice that works for me when im not in a hurry

  • 2123rj... I sharpen my saw EVERY DAY if i use it all day. I´m really curious to what you use the saw for if you can use it for two years without sharpening it. Also.. You can look at the woodchips to see when you need sharpening or if you have sharpened it correctly.

  • Does anyone know if new chains have to be sharpened before use? I was using a Makita U4030A almost every week for two years and it was cutting pine like butter. I purchased a new Oregon chain from home depot and now it doesnt cut anything. It just heats up. The chain spins and is installed correctly and its the correct size. If you know whats wrong let me know.

  • @2123rj try putting the chain on the right way round. if its new it will require no sharpening.

  • @Raverbaby1000 Thank you for the reply. The chain is on correctly but it ran through the soil for like 10 seconds. I was cutting a big tree stump. Is that enough to damage a new chain? Does the soil damage the chain that quickly? Also is a Dremal tool good for sharpening the chain? Thanks again.

  • @2123rj Dirt and rock will do a job on a chain.

  • @hosea49 thanks for the reply. I went and purchased a new chain. Here a new chain is about $12 so I went and got another one. Its working great now as long as I keep it away from the soil and mud. Makita uses Oregon chains but they sharpen the new Oregon chains thats why I was able to use the Makita saw for 2 years without sharpening it. 10 seconds in the soil is all it takes to damage a chain.

  • Dirt will dull your chain with in seconds and no dont use a Dremal tool that will destroy the chain. There are small round files that you can buy that are ment for the size of your chain and learn to sharpen it right. Im still using the same chain i had 3 1/2 years ago so it works.

  • @2123rj I think you have the chain on backwards with the cutting edge facing you.

  • LOL does he know the bar is upside down.

  • Works for me

  • Thanks! That's what i thought, but it just didn't look right, when i was doing it.

& Then i might need a new chain?

My kept stoping, mid cut. Finally it wouldn't cut at all.

    Have a Good One!

  • First, always move the chain opposite of the way this guy is doing-you will bleed less: Always turn the chain the way it goes when it is cutting. Secondly, sharpening with a file is OK, but if you are doing it in the shop, clamp the bar in a vise to hold it securely. Notice how this guy actually is trying to hold the chainsaw, and sharpen. Use two hands on the file to control angle etc. Professional? My sharpening jobs will out cut this guys 2 to 1.

  • Yeh, good idea. Have a professional sharpen your chain. Please.

  • Could i use a regular flat file if i wanted to??

  • @joehavian you can only use the flat file on the rakers...you have a groove to go by on the chain with the round file

  • Yes just there is a technique you have to use while doing it.

  • Hope his cutters aren't as dull as his commentary. Should be wearing gloves, should actually put some force into it rather than tickle it. Also no mention of horizontal angles, I could go on. Some "professional"....

  • @Iclimbthereforeiam actually he says right in the video to do it at a 25-30 degree angle. But I guess you didn't watch the whole thing before you jumped to conclusions. How the hell do people find a way to hate on even a chainsaw sharpening video?! It's beyond me...

  • Thanks. Very helpful. I needed this info.

I know professional tree cutters sharpen their saws often and periodically taken it into a professional saw chain sharpening company to get everything perfect again.

  • (yawn) my dad and brother told me to find this video and its BORRINNG! and djhurda was right he does look gay

  • like most expert village vids, this leaves a lot to be desired. also the guy makes a strange remark ("i sharpen by hand, but once in a while take it to a professional...." I thought that was YOU). you cannot see what he is doing. most people are going to need a guide to understand the angle. he doesn't tell you to check the chain specs for the angle/file size...these are important. he may know what he's doing, but he didn't "teach" anything.

  • He doesn't say that he takes it to a professional, but that he has it "professionally sharpened". He's probably referring to the $400 chainsaw sharpening machine that he probably owns.

  • with all due respect, you are choosing to split hairs. If I said I was going to have some plumbing done professionally, would you assume that meant I was going to get my "professional" toolset out to do plumbing? No. Best Wishes.

  • @kenfo0 DUDE THAT WAS HECKA FUNNY!!!!! GOOD ONE

  • @romnsch13 you ought to see when I am trying to be funny! WHEW!

  • @kenfo0 I am adding the whole idiot,..er, expert village series to my fav. list. The comments this tripe recieves are omongst the choicest ever. That poor man,.... I do hope he doesnt read the comments,....yeah I do.

  • @romnsch13 He is probably a nice fellow and knows what he's talking about. He just didn't do a good job conveying info. Maybe some non-ignorant comments might help him teach better.

  • Comment removed

  • lol "ok. this is a chainsaw. uhhh a chainsaw."

  • If you buy good chain like Oregon for example there are lines on top of the tooth for guiding the angles as the tooth is being sharpened and gets smaller with use.

Its very important to keep the teeth the same angle and length

  • Most good woodcutters like myself sharpen by hand whenever the chain needs sharpening. That can vary in times from right away to more than a tank of gas it just depends. Sharpening by hand is the best way for cutting firewood or logging in the woods and the rakers should be brought down every so often maybe every other sharping or third time. There is a better guide to use for this to keep them exactyly the same by placing it over the top of the tooth depending on what tooth is being sharpened.

  • best yet really good info thanks

  • este tio no tiene ni puta idea jajjaaja, ke poko arte pa afilar, despues de ese afilado no kreo ke korte ni agua

  • word

  • With the info from the vid' and the helpful comment by ticker511 and other posts -I now have a lovely sharp stihl saw-I will get the guides next time but this got me out of a fix as i had a tree own--Thanks all--

  • The raker's should 40 thou., he never looked to see if the chain was dull. Look at the chain, if there's a shine on top the tooth it's dull. Fill on till the shine is gone, make sure not to file to deep, you will get a hook in the tooth this will make it grab. But don't file to high, this will lay the tooth back. No it's not that hard, don't give up, it's fun to keep your chain sharp, cut with, and half the work.

  • wow you have been sharpening things for thirty years and you still dont know how to sharpen a chain saw chain. And most of the time when people say the dont need or like the guides they dont know what the hell there doing and this vid is a perfect example

  • Thank you for the information. My father-in-law use to have this type of business, but never taught us how to do it. Really appreciate your teaching. Thanks

  • Maybe a stupid question---

    Why is 'ECHO' backwards?

  • The bar is on upside down!

  • the bar has been flipped upside down so it will wear evenly on both top and bottom

  • gotta hit all the teeth and the rakers the same amount of times.

  • The file needs to be the right diameter for the size of teeth.

  • When I file I file like someone filing down teeth, back and forth really hard. Maybe it's wrong but I can't wait to get back to cutting down trees.

  • Oh wow....

  • It was a joke.

The "like someone filing down teeth" didn't quite work but it was all I could think of.

  • echo LOL

  • only fred does this by hand

  • nope, I do too.

  • Same here

  • lol, k.

  • Yeah i do it to dumbass

  • cheers 4 the lesson champ now we can start cuttn the fire wood =D

  • thanks fred for keeping it simple and straight to the point! that's all we need!!!

  • Hi fred - at last some one who does not complicate things and mentions angle and heights. Well done good video.
