  • "Radioactive fall-out can kill. You cannot see it or feel it, but it is there."

  • 4 Minute Warning music origin: "The four minute warning was a public alert system conceived by the British Government during the Cold War and operated between 1953 and 1992 when the system was dismantled after the cold war ended. The name derived from the approximate length of time from the point at which a Soviet nuclear missile attack against the United Kingdom could be confirmed and the impact of those missiles on their targets." @ Wikipedia. :)

  • Wow, had no idea this song was this old... awesome for them to bring it on B side of In Rainbows. Very cool footage of a gig, ty so much! :)

  • i wish i was there so bad

  • where were you're seats

  • Colin is awesome here, best tambourine player ever

  • This song should have been an A-side. Why wasn't it!?!?

  • @eyebal because they're radioheads

  • @eyebal Thom doesn't like some of his best songs... He apparently almost disowned "High and Dry". Too much sweetness in the melancholy for his taste? If only he knew how large the song could have been...

  • Please can someone send me a guitar tab?

    nathan.corp@yahoo.com

I need it so bad! And please don't send that A-D-E shit :D

  • Such an under rated song, the first time i heard it i thought it was meh. Then when i bought the single for Nude, it's become one of my faves :D. Remind anyone else of a Pink Floyd The Wall sort of song? Not lyrically but instrumentally?

  • @hchn333 not the wall so much as stuff on meddle, but defiantly pink floyd esc

  • Damn i love this song! it gets me off!

  • i think the sleeve's cut so it doesnt get in the way while hes playin

  • You are my rockstars guys! You don't need to be cooler than you are.

  • No one in the world could get away with the different-lengthed sleeves except for Jonny.

  • This song proves the greatness of radiohead.

This song didn't make the album? Is there any other band who would determine that this song isn't strong enough for the cut?

  • fucking awesome song, but jonny make this song so much fucking better with that guitar.

  • i love playin this on geetar n singin.. soo nice :)

  • Soon im gonna wake up..

  • class.i think this song n videotape sound much better live than studio version

  • fucking awesome!!

  • I will learn this song. And i will play it during the third world war :)

This is something what makes the humanity worth existing

    (sry for bad eng)

  • Fantastic!

  • I think I got up to go get a hamburger during this song at the concert. I was staaaarving,

  • @dropbows90 munchhieesss

  • super chills the entire song, every time

also, its good to see ed on acoustic. kinda rare

  • I'd be happy to spend the final 4 minutes of my life listening to this

  • Beautiful song. This is the first time I have ever seen Ed play the acoustic guitar on a Radiohead song. And this album came out in 2007.

  • wonderful it moves to tears

  • lol alright buddy

  • im sure they need your help planning how to perform

  • yea, well you don't gotta be a dick about it.

  • I really wish they would start to play the album version live. They should walk on for the encore with the static of the album version, lights still off. The dark blue lights come on and Thom is sitting at the piano and colin starts banging the tamborine. jonny starts doing his thing on the guitar and ed comes in a little later, making etheral sounds with the guitar. No one would suspect the song to be played and it would blow everyones mind. At least the real radiohead fans

  • o my god what a way to end a show

  • @ItsWhatever24

    I like that idea.

However, Radiohead prefer to open energetically - and this may be wise.

  • both the live and studio versions of all of their songs are epic you just have to listen to the studio versions on kick ass stereos.

  • This is great, thanks for sharing

  • Well, I had a really bad moment in my life, and this song helped me out a lot... now I know that you will wake up no matter what the nightmare is....

  • Sometimes it is just best to "run and hide."

  • you dont know how much i appreciate u for upload this, sounds soo nice ^^

  • I looooooove Ed's backing vocals on this. Just amazing.

  • lucky guy !

  • I love this song

  • somebody will play this during third world war

  • @mikemty geez, i bloody hope not... :s

  • @mikemty At least me.

  • @mikemty We all ready are !

  • @mikemty I bloody hope not! :|||

  • they have a lot of beautiful songs! i think 4min warning live is the best!

    1. 4minutes warning

    2. like spinning plates

    3. the tourist

    this is my opinion.

  • It's long over due for another "LIVE" album there guys..this song in particular has been consistently way better live then on rainbows 2. Mainly cuz Jonny Freaks out all awesome. New live album.. please guys.

  • Wow this version is great! I wonder if they have a studio version with Jonny and Ed..

  • to me the perfect opening song for a concert :D

  • Or the closing :)

  • simply beautiful

  • i prefer the cat power version

  • hahahhaha

  • @plist219 How is it called?

  • this version is brilliant. i like the studio version, it echoes atmosphere by joy division but it doesn't compare to this whatsoever, the subtle notes that thom and jonny both play in this make it superb

  • i was seriously depressed when this song was not on the 08 tour.......why Thom?

  • You need psychiatric help.

  • the lyrics of this song are amazing so desperate and painful

  • This song really helped me through a shit patch of my life, they should've ended In Rainbows with this after Videotape.

  • This is sheer musical genius - Radiohead at its very best. They can take such a haunting subject and shed some beauty on it like no other band in the world. Their enigmatic style is what keeps them so relevant. You never know what is coming next and that is what makes them so special. Forty years from now, they will be remembered as one of the greatest bands of our generation. This song only adds to this reputation.

  • thanks for posting

  • im surprised they performed this however it sounds great.

  • this song is so beautiful. something about it reminds me of when i was a kid or something. it gives me this weird feeling... like when i would climb the ropes in gym class.j/k

  • This version is 10 times better then the in rainbows version. the same goes with a version i have heard of nude which has glockenspiel in it

  • like videotape i much prefare the live verison than in rainbows version

  • :) love this song. yet another gem from our dear friends radiohead. cool vid, cool guitar part by johnny too. i didnt notice it on the bonus track album. its a nice touch. i can listen to this song at least a dozen more times

  • love jonny's guitar part in this

  • Radiohead has travelled in their very own direction from the beginning. To this day, they continue to reinvent themselves with out-of-this world tunes. It amuses me when people mention other Brit/Uk bands in the same sentence. Some describe silly puppet groups like Colplay as being similar. It's because they have attempted to copy the masters of sound...Radiohead! They cannot be replicated & if attempted, they will be revealed as phonies.

  • my pusssy is wet q

  • ueppppp

  • Radiohead's not so subtle hint to us humans, the worlds gone a little cockeyed if you haven't noticed, so WAKE UP!

  • It seems like the album (well, bonus disc) version of this song was almost ashamed of itself... this version is so earnest and straight-forward. You can really see the Neil Young influence coming out. It's like "I Am a Wicked Child" that way.

  • i dont know why, maybe its just me

but this song reminds me a lot of Motion Picture Soundtrack.

    anyone else agree?

  • AHHHHHHH! I can't believe that I was there to hear this and I didn't even know at the time how awesome it was. They didn't play it that much during this recent tour. Maybe they got sick of it.

  • Pure sonic beauty. The lyrics both devastate and redeem. The sound soothes and dazzles. Radiohead = five absolute musical geniuses. Thank you, Colin, Jonny, Ed, Phil and Thom!

  • According to Rolling Stone magazine, apparently people 'lovingly' referred to it as Radiohead's Coldplay song. I always will disagree with that. Coldplay's music is often, solipsistic, where this is a song with tragic lyrics about hypothetically the end of the world with redemption in the music. Lovely song, and since Coldplay in many ways tried to copy Radiohead's sound, to me it's Radiohead's 'Radiohead' song.

  • For the very gifted, there comes a time in a band's progression when they come to a fork in the road; one way is signposted BIGGEST BAND IN THE WORLD and the other GREATEST BAND IN THE WORLD. I think U2 and Coldplay went one way while Radiohead went the other.

  • Well said, and I fully agree. Radiohead played the game well. By refusing to be pigeonholed by constantly changing their sound they ensured that they will have support no matter what style they choose. U2 was bogged down by their political posturing and Edge's 'trademark' (i.e. repeated) reverb guitar. Coldplay became limited in their approach altogether by being consistent (i.e. barely altering their song structures). Long live Radiohead!

  • Long live Radiohead indeed. I liked Parachutes, and The Joshua Tree is a classic album that still sounds good today, but as both bands tried to capitalise on these launching pads to world domination I became increasingly irked by what I can only describe as 'product' being churned out and heavily promoted by these groups.

Contrast this with how Radiohead followed up their landmark album OK Computer with Kid A (and Amnesiac). There's more to this story of course, as Radiohead fans well know...

  • ...but after initially having some of my own issues with both albums I have come to utterly appreciate the entire Radiohead oeuvre as a wonderful and diverse collection of outstanding music. What really gets me about their stuff is the depth of emotion both instrumentally and vocally, and Thom's

ability to succinctly and repeatedly capture the zeitgeist of the moment in his lyrics, often with a single line.

  • I agree! WOOOO RADIOHEAD!

  • best comment i've ever seen on youtube

  • @kiwidavid72 I think you take your poetic skills a little too seriously.

They're a GREAT fucking band. Period.

  • @kiwidavid72 U2 and Coldplay have nothing on these guys

  • @spongey222 Agree. They're not even in the same street. They're not even in the same timezone.

  • @kiwidavid72 Radiohead is band of musicians, a band of men who want to improve themselves, who aren't afraid of musical exploration and they don't consider it a commercial risk but something they have to do. In U2 you have the biggest hypocrit and piece of shit of the world, Bono, who owns 1.5% of facebook and claims to be a philantropist. In coldplay you have a band of bland men, who aren't such a piece of shit as Bono, and aren't nearly as talented as Radiohead. Pure mediocrity.

  • Thank you Millenia

  • You're welcome. Though you need not thank me at all. I simply state my opinion. Nevertheless, cheers!

  • best radiohead song

  • Beautiful song!

  • also disagree that it's better than the studio version. this sounds way more epic...but the studio one with the white noise at the start sounds like someone dealing with panic. i think it's represented in the music on the album version.

  • hmm, who's playing the weird synth sound in this?

cos its not jonny, or colin, or ed. unless they delayed it or are just using a backing track??

  • it's thom... his piano is playing both synth and piano

  • really? that's well cool, but how does it work?

like is the piano hooked up to two amplifiers, one with synth settings?

  • not exactly sure, i think that maybe the piano is either a piano that can be switched to a piano/strings one, or like you said it is hooked up to an amp w/ a synth.

  • If it's a MIDI piano it can be hooked up to control multiple devices (like a string module and a piano module) at the same time.

  • The studio version makes sense in the context of In Rainbows, but this version has this lilting, ethereal majesty of a band firing on all cylinders. Amazing guitar work from Jonny, and I love Ed's backing vocals. However, like I said, the studio version makes sense and it grew on me, and now I love it as well.

  • it's not the same version as the one on disc 2 dipshit

  • i wish they'd make this into a studio version. great song either way

  • ? There is a studio version. On In Rainbows disc 2.

  • Maybe the best song in "in rainbows".For one moment i thought that it was spacemen 3, the sounds at the bigining. It´s so precious...

  • this is much better than the in rainbows version

  • what a heartbreakingly beautiful song

  • jonny does awesome work on this

  • greatness.

  • simplier and better than the studio version. period

  • wouldnt say its simpler really, the album one is so stripped back. this one has so much optimism in it, even despite the lyrics. you're right this one's much better, same as down is the new up, and go slowly.

  • I remember being slightly disappointed with the CD version when it came out, but now I like it more than the live versions. Love both, of course. Brilliant performance.

  • ed and phil doing the "oooh"s in the background is great

  • I am on the verge of getting divorced with my wife.

And this song means so much...

  • ouch... hope that goes well man...

  • I'm so sorry oggi75 . I will pray that things work out for you.

  • it aches is it disperate

  • i love this song more than anything. especially this recording. i was there for it. and i just want to listen to it over and over

:::does anyone have a recording of this show?

  • what a paradox this song sounds so amazingly beautiful yet its so sadistic in meaning

  • i wish you could delete comments after you made them lol

  • haha, thats fucked up

  • no kidding. just one dude trying to have his input, another guy completely shutting him down, then the sad surrender...

  • lol.. tough is was easy to make fun of th a-hole

    --------> existenial

Hey kwernowsky with how much are you sharing the family braincell??

  • i love this song, wish it was on the album along with bangers and mash, but you cant have everything...

  • well it is on the bonus cd :)

  • unfortunately the bonus CD was about a million times better than the actual album

  • Can't really agree with that, both are exceptional brilliant.. for me they complete eachother to 1 amazing album worth waiting 4-5 years for. You really can't get sick of radiohead :)

  • weird seeing ed on the acoustic

  • this song should have been the last track on in rainbows..replacing videotape...this song is better.

  • it is on disc 2

  • I think this is the one song where I'll have to play the "old version is better" card.

    Fabulous!

  • I think I'll go the opposite. The album version takes the rather standard arrangement of the whole thing and obscures it; leaving only the most important components: like the piano after the chorus, etc.

  • I agree, I like the album version for what it is. Just think of the album as sort of a private listening while the live songs are for a group of people; would you really want to be at a concert falling asleep listening to the album version? No. Would you like to be sitting at home enjoying the soft, gentle sound of In Rainbows and then all of a sudden have this loud, crashing live sound come into your ears? Don't think so.

That's just how I see it at least.

  • i trust radiohead. After all they are the people who wrote the song. So there must be a reason why they play it live this way, and why they recorded it that way. I'd love to hear and see this one live.

  • so much better than the album version

  • ed's most hauntingly beautiful harmonizing

  • among with fog,one of the sweetest songs they've ever written..

    i don't want hear it

i don't want to grow old

  • Actually vangel this is one of the most relentlessly unsweet songs they have ever written. It is about having 4 minutes left to live before a nuclear bomb hits. The dont want to grow old part means that you dont care if you live a long and full life you just want to get the fuck out of there.

The fact that the song sounds so pretty only adds to the complete brilliance of it.

  • I guess i didn't pay much attention to the lyrics..i was probably refering to the bitterwseet feeling that's growing into you as you listen to it(it's probably caused by the music)..''i don't want grow old''

i thought that partit was refering to people who lose their innocence as they grow old..but anyway ..thank you,and sorry for my bad english!take care!

  • Ha,ha dont apologize!

I think its great for a song to have more than one meaning for people!

  • oh shit- i always though it was "i dont wanna know"

  • My god! I wish to got the chance to see them live n with Florencia beside me always!!! love u Flo!

  • it on the new cd isnt it? the 2nd disc

  • yup last track disc 2

  • I Hope that live version from 4 minutes warning and bangers and mash will be avaiwable one day

  • This song sounds in my mind all the time. Love it, love it, love it! Love Radiohead.

  • thats called getting brainwashed !

  • i'm soooo glad i heard the in rainbows version of this first...i mean, this is OK, but the bonus disc version is haunting, the way it sounds peaceful, but the lyrics are totally scary....that to me is REAL authentic amazingness!!!!

  • This song is fucking up my world. It's wrecking me and I love every minute of it.

  • Krankzinnig goed!!!!!!!

  • i liked coldplay better when it was called U2, but even then it was questionable.

  • if coldplay had written this song it would be by far the best thing they had ever done. Radiohead showing them how it should be done. In Rainbows version is beautiful.

  • very disappointed with the bonus disc version of this song. but ill always have the memory of being at this show.

  • I actual wish that they would put out alternate versions of a couple of the songs from In Rainbows. Songs such as, videotape along with this. It's just that I was quite surprised to see the studio versions of both songs ended up quite the opposite of what I expected having seen the live versions. Maybe someday? Hopefully!

  • 4 minute warning is such a tremendous finale for an album. the simplicity of it almost gives you the feeling that this the last album radiohead is going to make, not saying it in a bad way, just that, the way its made, the mood of it. i love this song.

  • Yeah, I like the CD version better. It's more "The Bends" quality than "Hail to the Theif". Not that there's anything wrong with either... I just prefer the subtleness of the quiet version.

  • i love this song, wish it was on the album along with bangers and mash, but you cant have everything...

  • You are a self-important piece of shit. You fail at life.

  • I don't think having an opinion makes someone self important, and I don't think being disappointed makes someone a piece of shit. It's not like I attacked the band personally anyway. You need to get off their nuts and stop being such an oversensitive dork. Also you fail at not regurgitating stupid insults that were lame about 4 years ago.

  • Since there are many fans who see the In Rainbows CD2 version of this song as one of the best things they've ever done, I think we're discussing personal likings here which are not to be discussed...

Anyways...absolutely great song in both versions at least imho.

  • i liked the album, but to be honest. I would of liked it more if not given the tracks so early before the album came out. I've been waiting for them to grow on me, but its just not the same as compared to Amnesica.. oh well. ROCK ON RADIOHEAD!

  • this is gorgeous. thank you for posting.

  • im pretty sure radiohead has a better idea of what they should do than you. so shut your fucking mouth because your insulting the greatest contributers to art in the history of our planet. go find a band to apprecieate dwell on how they disapointed you. fuck right off you must be deaf

  • I can't lie, 'rainblows' was a pretty funny thing to say.

And, yes, I was waiting for 'videotape' to nut in my face, but it just didn't.

  • Ha ha.

  • Hey Scot, why don't you cover it?

  • correction. why don't WE cover it?

    this song needs heavier drums.

  • i wish they had made the studio version this awesome

  • This is such a terrific song! I can't believe someone would even dare to call this boring. Seriously, if you think its that boring then skip out on the buying the cd and purchase a coldplay or snow patrol album. Just give this band the respect that they deserve.

  • you missed the whole point. this sounds like coldplay. so if i don't like it, why would i like coldplay?

  • Obviously you missed the point as well. The point being that you should give the band the credit that they've come to earn over the past 14 or whatever odd years. They're one of the greatest bands in the world, so don't compare them to Coldplay. I won't lie, I happen to like Coldplay, but at the sametime I know there's no comparison between the 2.
