Who knew that so much truth, beauty and wisdom would come from someone who formed a band in his youth to chase pretty girls and who generally like to clown around?
At 88,my dad sang this song on the 2nd last day, on his death bed. I hope our Singapore politicians could tune in to this song and learn some truths from it.
According to my parents, I loved this song when I was literally a baby. I'm really happy to have found a good, meaningful translation! I only wish it was the original arrangement, because this version sounds a little... cheesy.

Sam Hui meanings seem to have come from teachings of Buddha. Not Mean to be sad or happy...but at peace ... for you heart and soul to be at peace so that in life you don't stress out about things that you shouldn't stress out about... Life is mean to be enjoyed ...every race ,every nation , every class... we all live on one planet.
Can some one kindly post these lyrics in cantonese pronunciation please. I speak cantonese but sadly and shamefully, don't read Chinese,/Cantonese characters The words and melody are as many say evergreen and touches the heart Many thanks in anticipation.
How did someone so good looking at the peak of his career write a song we could easily confuse with the the Dalai Lama? I would love to hear what life incidences taught him this supreme teachings of life.
Even as an ABC, I still enjoy listening to his songs even though I don't really understand the lyrics (thanks for translation!). I find it much better than today's meaningless songs about love and materialistic things.
Sam Hui is my biggest idol when I was young. His songs is full of meaning and life. His lyrics is absolutely correct on our life path. We have to be contended with what we have and live a day at a time. We must always put our best foot forward to bring joy and happiness to others whenever possible as life is too short to grief over all our past mistakes which is the greatest achievement in life.

@charlenechaplin TOTALLY AGREE ! i dun mind any language or race, i listen to all kind of songs, but i do totally agree with u, only meaningful lyrics touch my heart.
It was a good life I lived through thick, thin, sadness, happiness, sorrowful days and yet we live thru them like a breeze. Thank you Mr Sam Hui that you came thru our lives and touch our inner feelings with your godly wonderful songs. I thank God for that and may you live a 100 years or more to write more wonderful songs.
You really don't need to die young to be a legend, this is one perfect example. Incredible someone so successful could keep his feet so firmly on the ground, producing such a sobering masterpiece. (BTW, the English translation is superb, clearly from a very solid English background)
Thats why they called him CANTONESE SONG GOD. A living legend. All his songs lyrics are based on facts of our daily living life and contains lots of good advice too.
I heard this song in the 70's or 80's. I never tire of it. I cannot understand the lyrics well but the tune and the flow is just haunting and entertaining. I am now in my late fifties and I have to really commend Sam for giving us such an evergreen and beautiful song. Thank you very much for posting it on Youtube. TChow
Can someone tell me how accurate the overall english translation is? like a %? Also I wasn't sure about the part: "Happiest are those who have a fair mind and a clear conscience, and who perform good deeds whenever possible." could someone go into more depth if possible? thanks :) And this is a lovely song.
@Apocolypsolo00, @Apocolypsolo00, i'd say the translation is quite good although i could be a bit biased given that i'm a native speaker of cantonese.
as for this "Happiest are those who have a fair mind and a clear conscience, and who perform good deeds whenever possible" <-- this is a rather buddhist way of thinking. be fair, have a clear conscience and help others (do good deeds), then you will be fine becuase you will have good karma and you a good next life.

@Apocolypsolo00, having a clear conscience and performing good deeds not only give you good karma, but also make you happy.
i think the whole song is quite buddhist. or like the quote from bible "do you best and god will do the rest". just be a hardworkign and good person and you will get what fate has in store for you. dont' be obsessed with outcomes.
@mlsi interesting interpretation, I can't say I'm buddhist but the song certainly seems to repeat the same theme (good conscious will bring you happiness). Thanks for your input.
@mlsi Stop talking like you carry buddhist heart. You don't. There are those who pretend to be buddha. If you ever come across a buddha appearing before you, becareful because he/she might be an evil scum bag disguised as buddha to mislead you.

This got to b one of the most sweetest, refreshing song ever. Great in melody and lyrics. . It is a forever evergreen song. U jus like it instantly and never get tired of listening to it countless of times
After all the arguing, I think Sam Hui wrote a beautiful song, this song is all about how to life your life in up's and down. We are here co existing only. Time up and we're all gone.
This song's lyrics meant how to take life as it comes. This song is not negative nor positive. Listen carefully onces again.
Search google for the lyrics or just go to sam's website and copy them for this song. Do another search for a site that lets you copy and paste Chinese characters into a little box and generate the pinyin. But the song is not sung in Mandarin, it's in Cantonese. Which do you want?
thank v much tsobasa777 for this song i still recall in early 1980 i sang n record in a tape sent to a girl o/s ask her marry me in 8/9/1980 in perth this year were be our 30th ann and it was a bind date so this song brings a iot to me
This is a very negative song. You are in charge of your own destiny and create ur own fate. If you leave ur future in the hands of "fate", you'll just be banged around by setbacks that come ur way. Know ur definie chief aims in life, make them crystal clear and go for it. U'll attain success faster that u envision. Remember the indisputable Law of Attraction and the power of ur subconscious mind.
I agree with some of your points, yes we are in charge of our lives, our actions, what we think & want in life. But also know that life is unpredictable and things do happen unexpectedly that are out of our control whether we welcome them or not. It depends on how you interpret the lyrics of this song.
Yes unexpected and unpredictable things may happen, but it's up to you to turn things around. Read up on the true story of Dr William Tan from Singapore. Btw I'm also speaking from personal experience, where I created success no matter how many unpredictable and unexpected setbacks life threw at me, simply because I focused my mind and made a consistent, determined choice to succeed .
I don't think it's negative at all...I think you're misinterpreting the song somewhat. The key message of the song is that this is a dog eat dog world, and that sometimes we just need to be realistic in the goals we set ourselves and pragmatic in the way in which we lead our lives.
Tat's precisely why I said that the song was "negative". My personal opinion is that one shoudln't shortchange onself by being too pragmatic and realistic. All the successful people I've met have always aimed for the stars and even if they faced numerous setbacks, they always achieved their goals because they never wavered with regards to their loftty goals. My personal principle is also to always aim for the stars, even if you don't get it, you'll likely land on the moon. But that's just me : )
@deschua76, are you out of your mind? This is only a song to be enjoyed, what the heck. You have the option not to listen to this song if you chose. But to me, this is one of Sam's greatest songs ever written and sung and brings back lots of good memories. It did not do any harm to my life, my career, and fill with plenty happiness.
Looks like my comments touched a raw nerve, haha. I'm perfectly ok with the song, it's the postings by you-tubers who were lamenting about their "sad" lives tat made me post my comments. M happy that u're doing good in ur life, keep it up. Always remember that "thought always precedes physical manisfestation".
@deschua76, I'm glad you do like the song and positive side of life. I believe Sam writes most of his songs from a poor man's point of view with hope for the future. Sam also started from humble beginnings in his family with a struggling dad working hard to make ends meet and to feed the siblings.
I think this is the best song ever to emerge from Sam's recordings. It is so wonderful to hear this nice tune and never get tired of it because it is evergreen. Thank you Sam, I'm glad I'm passing thru this part of life's journey to hear this song.
I've loved this song since I was a child but never understood the lyrics. The melody is wonderful and it matched perfectly with the life message in the lyrics. I'm 36 now and the lyrics hold even more meaning for me. Sam Hui is a genius to pen this song, one of the greatest Cantonese pop songs ever!
i'm a malaysian chinese, i have been speaking cantonese ever since, and i watch TVB movies n dramas regularly XD. i have heard of sam from my late father and i found his lyrcis meaningful, but since i dont read chinese, it's harder for me to comprehend. i found this translation very helpful :)

Loved this song the very first time I heard it, while in HK in 1977, but didn't understand the lyrics.
Still love it, just as much, more than three decades later and love it even more now that I understand the meaning...

嘗試去做嘅但未必做得透。
