sorry to go offtopic, but whats up with the minimal cpu-meter as seen around 2:05? I don't remember task-manager doing this in XP, but then again, I DO tend to forget remembering...
Remember this.If you have a notebook that has a screen with like 1024x600 (Hp mini 210) mpx than you can not play HD.If you download a movie that is 1080p than it will still be converted to 1024x600 mpx which is NOT HD.
You can watch video in 480p and still have an good quality since the screen is so small...
@Mihkellt Like I said to the other guy, it allows for quick and painless mobility and with my phone, I can do DLNA to a big screen and enjoy it in 1080p rather than scrunched down 480p upscaled garbled messed. This is more for legacy support more than it is anything else.
My Dell Inspiron Mini 1012 has 1366x768 screen and Crystal HD decoder. At 720P coded HD film with AC3 sound is smooth as silk at most 40% cpu load. Cpu is Atom N450 at 1.66Ghz...With disabling the decoder, it's completely unwatchable as the video above. Chrystal does what it says.
@ownedbymeeee That's not really the entire picture, pardon the pun. It eliminates redundancy with encoding different formats for different devices that people no doubt have in the arsenal nowadays. I recently bought my first smart phone (Galaxy SIIX aka Hercules) and it can play 1080p natively, keyword is natively. I can throw a MKV file off my computer and off I go. Same for netbooks/aging laptops, etc. My other device is a 1st generation AppleTV so this Broadcom chip is a godsend.
I am having problems with the Broadcom Crystal HD Decoder Mini Card BCM70010/BCM70012 on the HP Mini 210-1009SA. The 1080p play back is really laggy, I am playing via Media Player Classic with a MKV file. Any ideas why it lags so much?
@mjbell86 my understanging is that mkv is just a container for several formats. your video is prob encoded in an incompatable format. im thinking about getting on but i want to know what it does not work with
I wish you could tell me wich configuration of HP mini 210 bring in the Crystal Hd technology . because i've heard that not all the Mini 210 have it. does the Mini 210 1040 ??? does the Mini 210 1028???
i will thank A LOT who can explain or confirm/deny this. PLEASEE!
What player is the machine with the broadcom chip using, not a direct comparison really if you have two different machines and two different video players.
this test would have been more effective if you used 2 of the same netbooks, 1 with the broadcom, 1 without.
also you should have used the same software, the media player on the mini has a different UI so it's debatable that it could be a different media player.
just pointing that out, similar spec is not the same as exact spec.
I want this on my S10-3T. If Nvidia does release a MINI PCIE version of the ION I will probably get the ION. However this might be the only solution for netbooks right now. Time to investigate.
The Ion costs hundreds more. The broadcom card can be obtained online for $50. You still think the ION is worth it? I don't. I love my Lenovo s12 with the Crystal HD Addon.
The ion already does this? 1080p video accelerated media encoding and 3d gaming . Try running any game on that thing and it will slow to a crawl. This problem has already been solved with ion with extra benefits.
I play games on my netbook... i dont know where you are getting 90% but a good number of netbooks have the Nvidia ion graphics card which is capable of playing new games at a playable FPS
@CRAKIZGOOD Fallout 1 and 2 both came out in the late 90s.. im not talking about fallout 3, and theres obviously something wrong with your PC if you lag with those specs, because my Mobility 4670, intel core 2 duo laptop can play fallout 3 maxed
u replied to my comment which i pointed out that most people who buy netbooks dont have the intention of playing "heavy games" instead play low end game ie flash games for example
I just ordered a HP Mini 110 today from HP and I'm so glad I got this with the Broadcom card. I can't wait to see this as the old ASUS 701SD I was allowed to get is being retired. Good presentation Naren!
I have one of these cards, but cannot find a single video player that will work with it. Anyone have any suggestions? I have tried VLC, Zoom, PowerDVD, ArcSoft and even the newest Windows Media Player with Windows 7. Thanks!
Yes, I have used Arcsoft Total Media Theater Platinum 3 version 3.0.1.120 and it will not utilize the card. I have checked to make sure hardware acceleration is enabled in Arcsoft, but am still not getting anything from the card. If anyone has ANY ideas I'd love to know, otherwise I'll be forced to return this card.
this is great! i know there are netbooks like the asus 1000hv which have an ati chip but for ppl like me with the gma versions, i can just pop 1 of these into the mini-pcie connector! :D
if you have to use the braodcom media player or its own to watch the movies, wot type of file fomat does it support. nowdays it seems most any hd media that is out there should beable to be played on these media players.
anyway ill wait for ion to hit the netbooks sometime in the next few months
They use Arcsoft Total Media, look at their site for full media support list but in short it plays almost everything out there. It's a good player expensive to buy too.
now what would be really cool is putting one of these inside a smartphone

@compsci1010
1. ION comes with a price premium (Cheapest netbook? $250. Cheapest ION netbook? $400.)
2. ION only does 1080p in Linux, so gaming's a bit of a no-go either way. Broadcom's works in Linux, Windows, and Mac (already working on AppleTV).
3. GMA 950 might suck at gaming, but gaming performance kinda sucks on anything with an Atom.
On the flipside, ION can play Killa Sampla @ 1080p. Crystal HD can't. As such, ION can almost guarantee you that any video will play in XBMC.

they had different players in those laptops. would be better test if player would be same.

I tried one of these in an Acer 5100 and CPU utilization dropped to around 20% when playing 720p in youtube and 40% with 1080p.
